Anne Agoren, of izzi Bag: Oh that’s an easy question I just love handbags and I know that because every single cupboard and draw in my house is full of them. I never give them or throw them away and I keep them all in their soft protection bags. I have for as long as I can remember admired handbags regardless of cost or brand. I used to spend hours in my mother’s closet just touching her handbags and pretending they were mine. You will often see me on the tube or in the park drawing them from everyday inspirations.

Love My Dress: When did your passion for handbags begin? What drives you to design?
Anne Agoren, of izzi Bag: My passion comes from the love of the smell of the leathers we use and the quality of all the accessories we purchase. I so much enjoy researching for the right colours and the right quality of all the products we use in our collection. What drives me is an open ended question, so many things is the obvious answer, but I guess I want to one day walk down the street in any city or into a restaurant from London to Timbuktu and see someone carrying an Izzi Bag, then I know my job is done.

Love My Dress: I’d love to know about the process for designing a bag? Where do you start?
Anne Agoren, of izzi Bag: The process of designing a bag is not so straight forward, I draw every single day. I carry a small art book wherever I go and when I get back to my studio I convert the ‘snap shot’ to a proper drawing or to a larger one, sometimes I never change anything from the first notes, just make it larger for the manufacturer to be able to see what I am trying to achieve. I have bag designs that we will not use this year or even next but they are ready for when the time is right.

Sometimes it is on the handles, sometimes on the opening flaps, sometimes the interior. From the actual design I then think about leathers and colours I want to use, then We research them and collect swatches before making a final decision and then of course sampling has to take place before production.

I have a lot of one off samples that I do not always put into production, maybe the colour was not right or the leather was too shiny or too flat. I never give or throw these away though, they are the bags I use as my own. I recently had a lady at a dinner at the Sloane Club almost wrench one of my hand bags out of my hand, she tipped my belongings all over the table and declared it was now her bag! It took a lot of convincing to get it back. I had this vision of myself walking back to the tube with my worldly possessions in a plastic carrier bag and that would never do would it? (I am laughing at this point) however I did promise to make her a one off bag before the evening was through and she reluctantly gave it back to me.

Love My Dress: How did you start out?
Anne Agoren, of izzi Bag: I started Izzi Bag because I was made redundant twice in 3 months and I took the decision that enough was enough, I had the talent, knowledge and experience to do this myself and I believed that if I could survive this economic crisis we are living in right now that I could survive anything. Redundancy was not the end of my life it was the beginning of a fantastic journey.
Love My Dress: Do you have a design qualification and career history?
Anne Agoren, of Izzi Bag: No I do not have design written qualification but I do have a fashion career history. I do not always believe that in any industry you necessarily need to have a BA Honours in that field. The only thing I would say about fashion is that you need to have broad shoulders, skin as thick as an elephant a good business mind and an eye for that special item.
I have always been a creative person and spent more hours drawing than my mother would have liked. Although I was educated until I was in my early twenties I still believe that the life experience I have gave me all the grounding I needed to survive. That is not to say that qualifications would not have helped the road be smoother or quicker it certainly would have.

Love My Dress: What are your plans for development?
Anne Agoren, of izzi Bag: We are developing everyday here at izzi Bag and we are always growing into another adventure as the day turns a corner.We are putting the final touches to the World Cup handbags and travel bags and we will very shortly finish the Winter 2010 collection before starting on 2011 which seems so far away.
