A Stylish Vintage Wedding and some Gorgeous Emerald Green…

I've been very excited about featuring these beautiful wedding photographs ever since the talented Brighton Wedding Photographer Lisa Devlin, of Devlin Photos submitted them for a feature on Love My Dress.

This is the vintage style wedding of Hazel & James who got married on 11 July 2009 at Ashdown Park Hotel in Wych Cross, East Sussex.  Hazel looks beautiful in her vintage inspired gown and pearls and the Bridesmaids dress just blew me away (see the gorgeous feather detail on the shoulder!).

Hazel's beautiful dress was by Elizabeth Filmore and she purchased it from Browns Bride in London.  The style was called 'Rose'…

"I must have tried on about 30 dresses altogether, mainly because at first I really didn't know what style I was looking for or what would suit me.  It really helped to try on a lot of different styles and define what looked good on me and what didn't.  I realised I had found 'the one' when I kept comparing every other dress to it.  I knew I didn't want a strapless style and I wanted something that was different but also classic and wouldn't date.  I felt all of those things when I tried on the Elizabeth Filmore dress.  I loved the way it was such a flattering shape and also kind of sexy in a way with the low back.  The rose detail was so simple and really worked – it was just the right amount to set it apart from other more simple styles."

Lovely lovely Louboutin…

"My were by Christian Louboutin and also purchased from Browns Bride.  The style name is Armadillo.  They've now been dyed emerald green!"

"My hair was done by Adele from the Trevor Sorbie salon in Brighton.  My make-up artist was Ginni Bogado, who was my teacher at the Jemma Kidd Makeup School.  She is fantastic and I knew she would be able to make me look fabulous on my wedding day!  I was mostly blissfully unaware of what products Ginni was using but I know she used Youngblood Mineral makeup for the base, eye-shadows by MAC and cream blush from By Terry."

"I wore a necklace and bracelet which were custom made by Mawi.  I love their vintage heirloom style jewellery and contacted them directly about where I could purchase some of their pieces, and they suggested making something bespoke which I absolutely loved.  I went up to their studio in London and discussed ideas with Mawi and she came up with the pearl necklace which trailed down by back and really emphasised the detail of my dress.  I love it and will definitely treasure it forever."

Beautiful Maids…

"My bridesmaid Gemma's dress was made by Joanne Fleming, an amazing vintage style dressmaker based in Brighton.  My adult bridesmaids shoes were from Office and my two flowergirls' shoes were from Monsoon.   The flowergirl dresses were from Monsoon, and I had Joanne make green chiffon shrugs to tie in with Gemma's dress. The Bridesmaids all wore fresh flowers in their hair provided by our florist, Style Workshop in Tunbridge Wells."

"I kept my hair very simple as I wore quite statement jewellery.  I just wore a fresh flower at the side to tie in with my bouquet and bridesmaids."

Floral Fancy…

"We decided to use Style Workshop based in Tunbridge Wells; we were given a florist as part of the package at Ashdown Park but having met with them and discussing what kind of look I was after, I didn't feel they would have worked so well.  Style Workshop are more contemporary yet classic at the same time.  They really seemed to understand what kind of statement I was trying to make and how to emphasise the space we had at the venue.  I really enjoyed being part of the creative process with them and seeing the results on the day."

Groomed to Perfection…

"James' suit was tailor made my Gresham Blake in Brighton.  James' tie was also from  Gresham Blake.  His wedding shoes were from Poste, sold at Office.  The Best Men & Ushers all had matching navy ties from TM Lewin.  We were originally looking for green but as James' tie was turquiose/teal, it seemed to work!"

"I walked down the aisle to 'My Love' by Paul McCartney.  There was a bit of a Beatles theme to the day and both James and I loved the sentiment behind the song so decided to go with this.  The guitarist Tom sent us some sound clips of him playing different songs on his guitar and this one stood out to us."

"I remember feeling surprisingly calm and collected on the morning of the wedding and really enjoyed the process of having my hair and makeup done, drinking some champagne and being surrounded by all my friends and family.  I did trip up the step on the way to the ceremony though which is so typically me!  The whole lead up to the day and the actual day was very surreal and it still is now when I think back, but it was definitely the most magical day of my life and I'm so glad I made all the effort I did to make it unique.  Most of our friends have said it was the best wedding they've ever been to so that kind of speaks for itself!"

"As bizarre as it sounds, my engagement ring was probably the starting point for the inspiration behind the style of our wedding.  It's an emerald with baguette diamonds each side and is an art deco style.  The colours got me started with thinking that green and ivory would be a great combination, hence the colours of the bridesmaid outfits.  I basically like classic things but with a bit of a twist – my dress was kind of old Hollywood glamour with a modern twist, my necklace and bracelet were pearls but brought up to date with some chunky gold thrown in…that was my thinking behind the whole day really.   Our wedding rings were from Burrells in Tunbridge Wells – www.burrellsjewellers.co.uk.  My engagement ring was from a shop called Ring in the Brighton lanes, and I wanted to try and get something made that would really compliment it.  I was able to tell the jeweller what I wanted and he created it perfectly.  www.ringjewellery.co.uk."

"There are so many lovely venues to choose from in Sussex and we went to see 3 before we settled on Ashdown Park.  We thought the setting was beautiful and it's situated on Ashdown Forest which was extra special because I used to walk there a lot with my parents when I was younger.  We couldn't think of a more perfect backdrop basically.  My Dad who passed away a few years ago, loved the forest as well so that also gave some extra meaning and I knew he would have definitely approved."

"Our wedding cake was made by Rachel Hill at Planet Cake.  I read about her in Sussex Wedding initially and loved the style of cakes she made; quite kitsch and retro which appeals to me.  I met up with her at her house where I saw some different designs and tried some of her cake (which was delicious by the way!).  I went with no particular idea in mind, other than I knew I wanted something different and that people would remember.  I decided to go with a pretty mint green 4 tier cake with big pink statement sugar roses on it.  We had a different flavour for each layer to suit everyone's tastes – chocolate orange, victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, and fruit cake."

Words of Wisdom…

"I would definitely say to a Bride to Be that if they are planning a big wedding, having as much time as possible to organise it all is definitely a good thing as it's surprising how quickly the time flies!  I would also say not to get stressed about the little things and things you can do nothing about, like the weather!  I was so paranoid about there being rain on our wedding day, and in the end it did rain and I couldn't have cared less.  In fact, it kept everyone more together rather than some being outside and some inside.  So it actually worked out pretty well in my case.

As much as everyone else will want to have their say on what you should and shouldn't do for your wedding, the most important thing is that you and your hubby to be are happy and do what you want.  You just can't please everyone, there will always be someone who's got a complaint but there's absolutely no point worrying about it.  You're allowed to be selfish on your wedding day!  One other little tip I'd recommend to a Bride if she's planning on keeping her dress, is to get it professionally cleaned as soon as possible.  I had mine cleaned by Lewis & Wayne in London and it's now safely tucked away in a lovingly presented box to keep it in great condition."
