1950s Style Wedding Day Fun ~ Cocktails & Cigarette Girls…

Morning all! 🙂 How were your weekends?  If you missed any of the posts since last week, you can catch up with them here; 'Little White Wedding Gloves', 'Vintage Cherish The Dress' and my thoughts/musings on the matter of Photography Copyright and 'Wedding Blog Exclusivity'.  For now, let's take a look at a wonderful vintage style wedding

This is fabulous 1950's style wedding celebration of Ruth and Thomas Osman, that took place on 1st May 2010 at Blairquhan Castle, Maybole, Ayrshire; "It was the first venue we went to when we got engaged and we just fell in love with the setting. It also allowed us to have the whole castle with 8 cottages all to ourselves for the weekend which was perfect for us. We are so glad we chose Blairquhan."

Ruth's fabulous 1950's style wedding dress dress was by Mia Bridal

"Myself and Sarah designed the dress together. I took inspiration from 1950s styles and designs. My main aim was to have a huge petticoat and nipped in waist. I loved everything about it as it was designed for me and by me!

I just love the 1950s, the glamour is probably why! I try to dress in a
40s/50s style anyway so that’s why I chose the dress and the rest just
seemed natural after that. All my guests seemed to enjoy it and really
rose to the occasion- they all looked fab. I had purple as the colour
theme as my engagement stone is an amethyst so it just led from there.
The theme was really fun and I enjoyed the challenge of finding all the
little details and right suppliers who would help create the theme. If I
did it all again I wouldn't change a thing.

Ruth wore a pair of cream open toed shoes with some vintage brooches for
detail (that Ruth added herself) and with some blue 'I do' stick on rhinestones on base of shoes.

The flowers were by JD Flowers in Maybole.

"They were
brilliant and really cheap compared to others! My bouquet was iris and
white peonies, I've just always loved peonies. Bridesmaids had hand tied
posys of peonies and plum alstromeria. Buttonholes were white roses and
iris. Pew ends were peonies, freesia, guelda rose and french ruscus and we had
a pedestal of peonies, iris, freesia and alstromeria. Our centre pieces
were vintage crockery adorned with various flowers including sweet peas
and lily of the valley- they looked amazing. I love that country flowers
look, not too neat or too flashy and the flowers were all beautiful…"

Ruth's Bridesmaids wore individual custom made 'wiggle' style dresses in plum silk, and satin black peer toes with a high heel.  They also wore 1950s cluster earrings from Magpie Vintage, which were given as a gift to each of the
bridesmaids and a vintage brooch on their
dresses…

Ruth also wore a Short silk tulle veil during the day which matched
her dress, and a Jenny
Packham
headpiece for
the evening (see the final photograph in this feature for a wonderful
shot of that headpiece!).

She borrowed a white gold and
diamond
bracelet from her mum and also sported a beautiful engagement ring and
wedding band and pair of vintage 1950s
diamond drop earrings.

Humanist Ceremony…

"We
had a humanist ceremony which was perfect for us. It provided all the
ceremony of a church wedding without any religion. It was so personal
and even quite informal at places which helped Thomas relax (he was in
tears from the moment he saw my petticoat from the balcony- a lot of my
guests said this was one of the best moments). The celebrant was
fantastic and my bridesmaids and Granny did lovely reading."

Diamond Rings…

"Our rings were by Micheal Kings in Cumbria ~ A local reliable
jewellers. I used them as my engagement ring is quite a unique shape and
I knew I would need a band made which fitted it perfectly- and it does!
Both rings are white gold, Thomas's is a plain band. Mine cures withA
engagement ring and has 11 diamonds."

Decor…

"We had lots of little details; The table centre pieces were vintage
crockery. Each table had a teapot, cake stand, milk jug, sugar bowl, and
2x teacups. All adorned with flowers or cupcakes. I got all the
crockery from various charity shops and ebay. We had personalised
gold lettering saying 'Mr and Mrs Osman' which sat on the Mantle piece
behind the top table. Also had a 'Wedding' sign and little signs saying
'Live well, laugh often, love much' dotted about. The favours were small
candy jars with sweets in and a personalised sticker.

We had a large
teapot for guests to leave their cards in.  We also had a candy bar, I
collected milkshake glasses and sweet jars and a cupcake teapot which I
filled with old style sweets. My fabulous friend Konnie Kapow provided the signage
for this and it was perfect. I
bought some floral material as table cloth."

The Brides Speech…

"I
decided I wanted to do a speech as I don't like that women don't talk
through usually! I was a little nervous but I'm so glad I did it- I
didn't write one down or practice so I just spoke from the heart which I
was really recommend brides to do. Unless they are really nervous and
would worry about it too much."

Brave girl Ruth – I did the speech at our wedding too! 🙂

"On the evening we had an amazing cocktail bar with flair bartenders and a
personalised menu. It really added to the '1950s' theme. Bar provided

First Dance…

Ruth and Thomas hired a swing band for the evening as well as preparing an iPod with playlists that was played whilst the band took rests…

"I've got you under my skin' was played by the swing band- its just one
of our songs and seemed fitting for the theme. Everyone was up and
dancing by the end of the song and I had bare feet by then- just such a
perfect, happy moment!"

Words of Wisdom and some final thoughts…

"Enjoy it! Take it all in, don't get too stressed or serious as really
if something goes wrong on the day it doesn't matter as its about
marrying the man or woman you love. As long as all your loved ones are
there its going to be an amazing day. I'd also like to say its totally
worth all those months of planning.

Thomas and I made sure we spent time as a couple before the wedding that
was 'wedding free time'- we went for a weekend away 2 weeks before and
we weren't allowed to discuss the wedding at all. I'm so glad we did
that, we had loads of fun and just remembered why we were getting
married! I'd definitely advise doing something like this to all brides to
be
.

My
guest list caused some tension in my family which was a shame but I
didn't lose any sleep about it. People who really love you are happy for
you and don't make a fuss if they are 'only invited to the evening
do'!

I am a very organised person (a list person!) so wedding planning
was fine for me, I enjoyed it. But I had so many little details and
suppliers on the day I realised about 6 months before I would need on
the day help. That’s when I found Sarah
at Creative Occasions and she was a godsend. I am quite
fussy and she got all the details perfect.
She helped set up the candles and bunting for the hog roast on the
Friday as well as put champagne, maps, weekend schedule,  breakfast
packs and pillow favors in each cottage. Then on the wedding day she set
up all the details, tables and made sure everyone knew were to go as
well as greeting and organising all the suppliers. She really was
fantastic and great value for money- I would highly recommend her, she
has a great eye for detail and is very easy to get on with.
"

"I
had the most wonderful wedding day and even though all the little
details were fun, when it came down to it it was the people that made
the day for us. So many of my guests said it was one of the best
weekends of their life and that, to me, is wonderful. Now I just have to
start getting used to being Mrs. Osman!"

Thank you so much Ruth for sending in your fabulous wedding photographs to Love My Dress.  Congratulations to to you and Husband Thomas on your marriage 🙂 Thanks also to Photographer Paul Mortimer for supplying these photographs.

Hope the sun is shining as brightly for you as it is this way folks! 🙂
