Hi All, time to share the first wedding of the week with you, and such a beautiful one it is too.
Taking place at Dalhousie Castle, Bonnyrigg, in Scotland, these photographs celebrate the wedding day of Lauren and Colin, a couple whose home is in Australia, and who tied the knot on 29 December last year.
I fell in love with these photographs, submitted by Edinburgh Wedding Photographers Blue Sky Photography, for the quirky ‘travel’ styling and of course, because of Lauren’s utterly beautiful vintage headpiece…
“Twice a year, Brisbane plays host to a Vintage Fashion Fair. I always knew I wanted a headpiece for my wedding and that I wanted something quite different from a traditional veil. My friend and I came across my beautiful dusty pink/mauve/netting creation which was absolutely ideal. The lady who sold it to me said she’d sourced it in Chicago.
The original piece is from ‘CAIN-SLOAN Co. Nashville’ and I believe they had a millinery department. The department store was built in 1903, and no longer resumes this name. As soon as I tried this on – it set the theme for me. Vintage Travel. Then I had a dress to find!”

“We decided upon Dalhousie Castle as it was very quaint, old fashioned, beautiful, and spoke for its self in theme…..”
Lauren’s beautiful lace, vintage inspired dress was by Australian Wedding dress designer, Elizabeth De Vargo, of Brisbane….
“I was looking for my dress and had a clear idea of what I didn’t want. I think this was the third dress I tried on, and with my mum across on holiday, and her reaction – I knew it was the one for me. Very classic, with a vintage edge – fitted in perfectly.
The beading is lace and pearls with little cap sleeves; buttons all down the back and heavy silk (latte colour) in our bottom part.”
“My shoes (or boots rather) were from an Australian shoe shop called ‘Wittner’. Perfect in colour, height and style for a Scottish Winter wedding!”
Harpers of Melrose provided gorgeous vintage style roses…
Lauren’s Bridesmaids worea navy one-shouldered long sleeved dress with a pretty sweetheart neckline, by Australian designer Matthew Eagar…
“Colin and I have known each other since we were 11 years old. He is my brothers best friend (my brother was the best man). We were friends before we were partners. We got together when I was 23 and we moved to live in Oz 6 months later. We have a real support for each other and I can say I am with my perfect partner. He is my best friend. (cheesy but true). You need a partner you takes you on as you!
I wanted to have a vintage theme and relate strongly to the distance/travel between Australia and Scotland, so we did our save the dates as vintage style postcard. With an old school picture of Dalhousie on the front. I used stamps from our original passports as design features on the postcard. The introduction of colour was there from the start and this was based on the headpiece (not the bridesmaid colours) and this carried through the whole event. We had dandelions which had the effect of making a wish and blowing on them… which then lead nicely into the dandelion… becoming a little paper aeroplane…..”
“Our passport Invite went down very well. I’m lucky to work in an industry where we have the skill set to try new things and rely upon beautiful stock and clever printers. My dear friend Wendy and I worked on the concept for the invites together. I conceptualised my concertina passport and wrote ‘the story thus far’ which was a little bit of background into our relationship. On the back of the passport, was our ‘travels near and far’, a map of where we’d been…”
To accompany the passports were the boarding passes – the tickets as such. With a perforated edge for the RSVP. We had 2 kinds made, one for the day, and one for the night guests. The ‘schedule’ as such, was broken down into; check in, through to the gates, in-flight meal, in-flight entertainments and a time placed beside. We made use of the paper plane through this piece. These went into brown envelopes which tied in nicely, with an address label.…”
For the actual day, to give people the impression that they were boarding a flight – we had the following things made up:
* Signage (for the check in, departure lounge, in flight meal, in flight entertainment, take off, landing)
* Flight Itinerary (Order of service)
* Place cards (name places which turned into the message tree notes)
* Message Tree
* Photo booth (just married signage with vintage trunks, stamp collections and maps of the world – sort of a Columbus feel!)
* In flight entertainment (pub quiz)
* In-flight drink tokens (favours)
To finish off – I have just made up thank you notes as a TELEGRAM (inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s book)…”
As wedding favours, the couple created ‘In-flight drink tokens’.
“These were business card size, with a map and twine as the decorative – with an instruction to ‘present’ to the bar to offer the guests free refreshments…”

“Elope! Ha ha – just kidding!
I’d say, make sure you decide on a theme and/or colour scheme for your day, so you can continually answer your brief. It’s a lot of fun creating a day, but it takes planning, so definitely have a check list.
Make sure the day is about you (as a couple) and not anyone else – that’s why people are there – for you – not for the most expensive thing on the men…
Have fun organising and try and have all the little touches done a week prior – so you can let your hair down and relax. Have a night out with your man/woman pre wedding and get all dressed up as singles!”
