A 1950s Inspired Bride with a Passion for Vintage and Cake…

Good morning lovers! 😉   I so hope this Monday morning blog posts finds you well and greets you at the start of a new week feeling good! 😉  Did you have chance to pop by the blog over the weekend? If not, then you'll have missed these important reminders about reader offers ending soon, this heartfelt story and this latest advice and discussions posts which focuses on how to avoid 'bad' wedding day suppliers.

OK, let's ge this show on the road with another typically beautiful real wedding – today, that of Julie and Ben, who tied the knot on 24 September at Yeldersley Hall in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

I absolutely adore these photographs – the wedding was submitted by Julie herself, who owns vintage china, props and decor hire company called Vintage and Cake.  I love the story behind Julie's cute 1950's inspired wedding dress, what she had made especially by Lisa of Pennycones…

"I found Lisa and Pennycones through a friend, as I wanted someone to alter a 1950's dress I had bought and I wanted to make sure it was someone who knew vintage fabrics and had that little bit of something different about them!  I found that in Lisa – she was so chilled out, cool and vintage! I knew she would be able to help…"

"I had my beautiful bridal fascinator and netting made by Heidi at Extra Special Touch.  Heidi was fantastic from the word go and we had several lovely meetings where she would show me each stage to ensure I was happy with it, I had lots of input in the design and she knew the look I wanted to go for.

I will miss our little hat meetings!"

"It turned out that she couldn't alter my original dress as it just didn't fit me well enough so she ended up making me a brand new one.  It was amazing – my favourite thing about it was the little Peter Pan collar, which was Lisa's idea!  This was made with lace from 1958 and she found it in Minneapolois!"

"I loved the shape of the dress and how comfy it felt on, I did feel like a Princess on my wedding day!  It was all quite late on in the wedding planning that Lisa made me the dress as the original one wasn't right so it could have got very stressful but with Lisa's chilled out attitude it was all fabulous!"

The couple's venue choice was Yeldersley Hall in Ashbourne, Derbyshire…

"We chose this venue for its beauty and wonderful countryside surroundings.  Also the owners Andrew and Joan are so lovely, kind and very helpful…"

"My shoes were from Kurt Keiger and then later on I changed into some vintage court shoes as my feet were killing me…"

"My bridesmaids just chose their own dresses so I don't actually know where they got them from but the weird thing was I just said to them get whatever you want; style, colour etc and they both bought similar dresses in the exact same colour, navy which matched my shoes!"

Such beautiful wrist corsages above there, so delightful!  All the florals on Julie and Ben's wedding day was provided by Kerry at The Blossom Tree….

"Kerry from The Blossom Tree is a good friend of mine, we met through our businesses.  I love her flowers and love of vintage styles, so again as soon as we were engaged we knew it was Kerry and Kerry alone that would do our flowers no one else would be good enough in our opinion.

I went for a real mixed rustic vintage style, so my bouquet was tied with buff string as were the button holes.  The flowers were a mix of just whatever was in season and lots of herbs and lavender, they were just beautiful, I couldn't have asked for anything more…"

"Ben and I met on a train!  It was a very chance meeting as I was travelling on an earlier train from my parents house in Carmarthen in West Wales and he was travelling back to his mums in Preston so was on my train which he never gets.

I got on with my mum and dad and they sat me down bless them they always used to actually get on the train with me until the last minute when they were seeing me off.  I was sat down and then my mum suddenly decided that I needed to move down the carriage as there were better seats down there so I did!  Ben got on about an hour later in the carriage I was now sat on and came and sat down next to me, he asked me if that seat was taken and I knew I wanted to get to know him more so we got chatting and that was it!  We met up a few weeks later then were inseparable and now married!!

"He proposed to me at one of our favourite paces; Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, the sun was setting and we were amongst a bluebell wood in April, I turned around to say something as he was a little bit behind me and he was down on one knee, when he said the words, Will You Marry Me I screamed for quite some time until he said well what is your answer??  It was of course yes.  We then drunk champagne and told all our family and friends.  It is a lovely memory…"

"I also made some little confetti cones from brown paper and used a bird stamp to finish them off, I had collected rose petals from the roses in our garden for months too so I filled the cones with them, they looked lovely placed into a wicker basket…"

"I love rustic vintage and I run a business that is vintage to its core called Vintage and Cake, so have always been inspired by vintage clothes, tableware and accessories…"

"My mum handmade bunting from vintage materials and we used that to decorate the entire marquee.  I had collected jam jars for months so we could fill the ceremony room's fireplace with candles, the effect was so amazing and very cosy, although the Best Man Rich was getting a bit hot as he was stood right next to them!"

"For the table centre pieces I sourced antique bottles to be filled with amazing flowers from The Blossom Tree, there was 5 per table of differnet sizes and shape, some really interesting ones too!

I used buff luggage labels with a bird stamp for all the name place cards and slipped them under the buff string which was tied around the vintage napkins that my mum made and sourced (she also sourced all of my vintage tablecloths)"

"I always knew I would make my own wedding cakes and I knew I wanted to go with lots and lots of them!  The main cake was a rustic vintage buttecream cake with handmade sugar roses, lovely and simple.  I also made a vintage style fruit cake with contrasting colours of blue and pink, as I love fruit cake, although my mum gave it away to my mum in law the day after!

Then I baked Victoria sponges, lemon drizzles, coffee and walnut cakes for the cake table and asked my mum, mum in law and best friend Zoe to make, Tirimisu, Pavlova, rich chocolate cake and brownies… it was so nice to have their involvement as they are all amazing bakers and were all delicious.."

"I made all my guests some little mini cupcakes topped with delicious buttercream swirls.  My mum, Mum in Law and Bridesmaids received  a homemade oat bath bag, made with oats and lavender tied with buff string in a muslim cloth…"

"I used vintage china for all of my tableware and the cups and saucers made the whole table so pretty.  I supplied all the vinage china and table decor myself via Vintage and Cake…"

"We used vintage tablecloths for each of the tables including the cake table and type writer table.  The venue had some old school chairs that we used to go in front of the typewriter table and hung jam jars of flowers off them, I loved the look that created.

I had a type writer table with a lovely vintage typewriter so guests could type us a message, this had hilarious consequences, some old suitcases for the guests to place their cards in, some old books piled up with a little jam jar of flowers…"

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

"Enjoy your engagement, everyone will say it to you but it really is a special time between the two of you as once its over you will miss it, it can be stressful but try and remember the most important things and don't let anyone stand in your way of achieving what you want to, with what is your wedding day , no one elses.

Invite who you want to invite and go with your heart..."

"Be mindful of moments in your day and cherish them, really think if you can at ceratin moments of the day how wonderful everything is and take time to take it in and enjoy it.

Try not to sob through your vows like I did…  I am actually quite glad I did do this as it was from my heart and I meant every word of it."

Oh what a sweet and lovely wedding! Julie, you look absolutely beautiful – huge congratulations to you and Ben  🙂 And thanks to Photographer Rachel Spivey for sharing these super-lovely photographs with us all…

"I knew Rachel from many vintage wedding fairs that we had exhibited at and we clicked instantly.  As soon as Ben proposed to me I knew I wanted her to be our photographer and when we went for our consultation Ben agreed.  She also does Burlesque photography and when we went to her studio in Leamington Spa it was my idea of heaven, little vintage pieces, feather bowers and just general prettiness.

She got what we wanted straight away and delivered as you can see by the photos.  We wanted very natural shots and thats what we got.  Ben and I always hate ourselves on photos and she has managed to make us look great and I think she has captured the real Ben that I see at home and not rigid smile Ben (sorry but its true!)!"

That's what I like to hear. A Bride completely satisfied with the service she received on her wedding day! Bravo Rachel.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this lovely little wedding – leave a comment below and let me know if you are planning ot have a dress made bespoke in the 50'st style – go on, you know I can read and talk about wedding dresses all day long, don't you, right?
