A 1920s Inspired City-Chic London Wedding ~ Vintage Dinner Suits, Black Tie & Casino…

"We do not take life too seriously and maintained that getting married was the most important thing of the day. We danced down the aisle when we had got married…"

Oh how I love to start Monday with something special :)  Firstly, let me ask, did you have a lovely weekend? I really truly hope so. Weekends are so precious to most of us and I feel rather like I've let mine pass me by without having a proper rest. Must try harder next time.  I've actually been working on lots of lovely ideas to develop the community here at Love My Dress, it is so incredibly important to me that I both support and inspire my readers as much as I can. I never want Love My Dress 'just' to be a place full of pretty – it's way more than that, and I've some great plans I want to develop. But all in good time….{all things come to those who wait and all that!}.

But you lovely lot don't have to be waiting around for any wedding day pretty this morning – cast your peepers down below and enjoy the fabulous 1920's inspired wedding of Robert and Alice.  Robert and Alice tied the knot vintage style on 13th August last year at The Royal Lancaster in London, following which the couple popped on over to Hyde park for drinks and pasties. Yup. Good old pasties! 🙂

The evening was held at The Grange Hotel next to St Paul’s Cathedral who hosted a casino to entertain guests, whilst overlooking the great sites of London from their amazing views. They even had ladies who gave massages to their guests – crikey, this sounds like one amazing wedding!

Now I want to give huge love and adoration to the lovely Zoe and Mandy from Dottie Photography for sending in these images – I adore those ladies so much, they are absolutely brilliant creatives {they design the most drop dead gorgeous stationery too!] and such immense fun to be around 😉 So I can imagine the atmosphere on the day of this wedding and that very glamorous dress worn by Alice – 'Joy', by Jenny Packham dress, which she accessorised with the most gorgeous original 1920’s vintage ostrich feather fan – a gem of a find on eBay, as was her original 1950’s stole…

"Having looked for an original 1920’s wedding dress, I struggled to find exactly what I was looking for. This was as close to what I had in mind, and has the advantage of being made to fit you.

Robert's suit was an original 1930’s dinner suit. He also wore a 1920’s cut out waistcoat and smoking jacket sourced by Victory, Whitely’s, London.  He teamed this with a bib-front flat front 1920’s shirt base, braces, cufflinks and a Collar from Saville Row, London…"

"I have been a fan of the 1920’s since a my mid-teens and enjoy all things about that time. We now both love all things vintage and Rob has enjoyed getting into the styling of this period.  We invited our guests to join us in our 1920’s wedding by dressing in black tie, or flapper/1920’s style if they wished to. We were thrilled that all made a great effort which added to the photos etc…"

Alice wore two original 1920’s dress clips in her hair….

"My Mum had found them in Portabello Road market one day and bought them for me knowing what a fan of the 1920’s I am. My hair was done by a hair dresser who specialises in vintage hair…"

"We got married in the hotel opposite our favourite part of Hyde Park which is just down the road from our house. We had 4 different spaces within the reception hotel that gave us 4 parts of the day. (Drinks on the roof terrace, afternoon tea on the floating floor, casino in the executive suit and clubbing in the basement night club). By finding a venue that could deliver all these different parts of the day made organising much easier.

We grew up in two very rural locations in England but at opposite ends of the country, London is where we live and is home to both of us now…"

"Both our rings were from Andrew R Ullmann Ltd., antique shop in Hatton Garden, London.  Robert's ring was rose gold from the 1920’s. This was chosen as we wanted an old ring that has history already and the colour and band proportions were just right for his hand. It was made bigger to fit.

My engagement ring was from the 1920's and difficult to find a ring to really compliment it, but while collecting the groom’s ring, we stumbled across an eternity ring in the same dealers that fitted my finger exactly, it was dated 1895, a beautiful white-gold eternity ring, so we decided that it must be the one!"

"We danced to Paolo Nutini's 'Pencil Full of Lead'. It was a surprise to me as we started our first dance – Rob had downloaded it in Paddington station that morning. It was song that means a lot to us from when we lived apart. It also has a fast pace as well as a 20’s swing to it. We jived!"

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

"It doesn’t matter what colour the flowers are, or whether the cake ribbon is the same colour as favour bows, the most important thing is that you get married to the one you love, the rest is all a bonus!"

Huge thanks to the wonderful ladies over at Dottie Photography for these gorgeous photographs…

"Absolutely captured the day perfectly, understood our requirement of a vintage look we wanted to our shots, not just in composition, but colours and textures also. We were keen to have some querky shots that summarised our personalities and enhanced the London flavour to our day…."

I cannot RAVE about Dottie Photography enough – they are amazing. I met them last year and have been in awe of their ability to produce incredible wedding stationery as well as take gorgeous wedding photographs too – a true dynamic duo who is frankly so very  much fun to be around too 🙂

So what do we think ladies and gents? Do you love this wedding as much as I do? The Joy by Jenny Packham wedding dress was such a hit in 2010 and 2011, I think it could possibly continue to be an all time classic Packham favourite too. Any more Joy brides out there, or are you going for something similar?

Who is planning a city-chic-style wedding like Alice and Robert too?

Ladies, lose yourself in more 1920’s, 1930’s, 1950’s and art-deco love here.  You can also see more city chic and London weddings.

I might be a country and coast girl at heart, but how I love The City…
