A Theatre Wedding For A Bride Who Made Her Own Dress

Morning guys n gals! The start of a new week, sunny, and definitely no snow where I’m sat – anyone else? I like to open up the week with a wedding and this morning’s was submitted recently by the Photographer Laura Babb, whose work I’ve not featured before now, so it brings me pleasure today to share the wedding day photographs of Andy and Lucy, who tied the knot on 21st January at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds.

Lucy is rather a dab hand at the sewing machine and created her very own wedding dress based on a basic dress pattern from the 1950’s…

“I made my own dress with some help from a dressmaker – Sarah Belinda. I have been sewing for a while now and can add this to my achievements!  had a very simple 50s dress in mind but also wanted a top layer of lace with a scalloped edge. I also made a bolero but didn’t wear it in the end as it was quite warm on the day. I loved that my daughters saw me making the dress and hopefully it inspired them…”

“I love 1950s and ’60s vintage -Andy does too, so our outfits reflected this.  Andy wore a 1960s style suit by Paul Smith…”

“We did most of the flowers ourselves bought from a florist in Bury St Edmunds…”

“We both have entertainment backgrounds – Andy in music and myself in acting and TV, Theatre and film so the venue was perfect and happened almost by chance, making it meant to be – it also made us feel very comfortable there as we were used to that kind of atmosphere. We wanted lots of music and made it all quite diverse…”

“Our love of the 1950s and ’60s and theatre was also reflected in the decor – we gave out 50s style vinyl CD’s as favours and had retro style place cards and the old style theatre programs name plan with the theatre lights…”

“We met through a TV work colleague – Andy saw a picture of me in the background of one one of her photo’s and asked if I was single – which I was!  Within 8 weeks we had moved together in together and seven years on we have two daughters and now are married…”

I just LOVE how Lucy went for a dress ring as opposed to the usual wedding band. I did the same!

“We love lots of colour and although I had originally gone with a different ring maker – I got let down with two weeks to go I found a gorgeous Victorian style ring by The London Vintage Ring Company which they customised…”

“To entertain our guests, we hired ‘Miserable Man‘ (Can you believe it?!) – a great uplifting acoustic singer who we found whilst walking through Norwich Town Centre.  We also hired Ready Steady Go – a ’60s band and a DJ…”

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

“Don’t be afraid to be yourself and be original. Follow your instincts and believe you can achieve what you want. Also – remember why you are getting married and that everyone coming is going to be there to support you (it will keep you sane!).

We had about four months to plan it all which isn’t long especially when you’re also making four dresses – if you can, give yourself about six months to plan it all. Any longer and it could drive you mad with ideas and any less – you can feel a bit pressured.

Above all else, make sure you enjoy it all – it is a fantastic time!”

I love it when a couple do something just a little bit different, and kudos to you Lucy for creating your own dress!  You sure look beautiful in it.

Thanks again to Photographer Laura Babb for sending in these photographs for me to share today 🙂 Lucy told me…

“We won a wedding photography competition and  Laura was our prize. She and Pete her assistant were great to have around – professional, easy going and they have produced some amazing photo’s that captured the day perfectly…”

I’ve had a few theatrical/cinema wedding settings now and there’s more to come. Are any of my readers planning a theatre based wedding, or planning on being super brave and making their own wedidng dress? I’d love to hear from you.

Much love all,
