An Original 1940’s Wedding Dress for a Relaxed and Fuss-Free Wedding… was last modified: May 7th, 2014 by Annabel

Hello everyone! Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for your patience this week as I work away from home  with a fabulous team on my big secret project.

I'm a little late sharing this with you today but all good things come to those who wait, and so on, and so forth! This is Emma and Chris and they tied the knot on 28th April at The Crown at Old Amersham in Buckinghamshire.

Photographer Ed Osborn {think beautiful dreamy images} submitted these images and I love them, they capture a relaxed unfussy day and a bride looking beautiful in her original 1940's vintage wedding dress from Abigail's Vintage Bridal, red lipstick and vintage inspired hair style…

"My dress was an early 1940's vintage dress. It was silk brocade with a puddle train and a matching long sleeved bolero. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever owned or worn.  I went to try on modern dresses but I just didn't like them, they just weren't me.

I found them all a bit generic and I couldn't abide the thought of walking down the aisle in something that looked like everyone else's wedding dress…"

"We both love cake (especially The Hummingbird Bakery cake) and felt that wedding cakes are often a bit dry and disappointing, having been made several days in advance. For us, it was much more important to have cake that tasted good rather than simply looked good but no one really wanted to eat.

The cake we cut was made by my grandma. This was a traditional fruit cake (with a generous dose of booze) covered in white icing and decorated with a peach ribbon and a rose. It was beautiful, it tasted great and we couldn't really have a family celebration without one of grandma's cakes…"

"I am quite tall and it was a struggle to find flat bridal shoes hat weren't hideously ugly and/or overpriced. In the end I opted for a coloured shoe as I am much more likely to wear this again. My shoes were bought on eBay…"

"The fabulous Claire Shell of Pin Curls and Pompadours, specialises in vintage style hair and make up. Having her there on the morning of the wedding to sort out my hair and make up (as well as ensuring I had eaten!) made the whole experience a pleasure as she took away any stresses about getting ready I may otherwise have had…"

"I bought adult bridesmaids vintage art deco style earrings to wear on the day as well as a vintage brooch. I found all of these either on eBay, Etsy or in vintage jewellers…"

"Our florist was a family friend.  We didn't want to have a lot of flowers as they have a tendency to die! Also, the venue didn't need a lot of flowers to make it look beautiful.

My grandma had apricot roses on her wedding day so when I came across the exquisite "Juliet" roses from David Austin in a wonderful shade of peach/apricot I knew I had found just the thing. Juliet's rosettes are already rather ostentatious and needed very little accompaniment. We made them the focus and teamed them with simple greenery and gypsophila…."

"I wore vintage art deco dress clips to attach the bolero to the straps of my dress – bought from Abigail's Vintage Bridal along with my dress.   I also wore vintage art deco baguette crystal necklace – a purchase from a shop on Etsy.com, along with my mother's diamond stud earrings…"

"Chris and I are both doctors. We met at medical school and started seeing each other just a few weeks into our course.  We talked a lot about getting married before he proposed on the beach in Brighton four and a half years later…"

"We chose to get married in Amersham as it is Chris' home town. We chose The Crown as a venue because it was a genuinely beautiful building with a relaxed atmosphere and they serve great food. Perhaps most importantly though they didn't try to force a certain style or type of wedding on us, we got to do things exactly as we wanted.

We were also able to have exclusive use of The Crown which was great as it made he whole thing much more intimate."

"We chose Ed Osbourne as our photographer because he takes beautiful pictures. We looked at a lot of websites for wedding photographers and felt distinctly underwhelmed. Ed even managed to take beautiful pictures for us despite the constant rain all throughout the day.

We did very few formal shots – which was a great decision and I felt very confident just letting himdo what he does. We are delighted with the results…"

"I bought my dress from Abigail of Abigail's Vintage Bridal. Not only did she help me choose a dress from her incredible collection of genuine vintage gowns but she did all the alterations herself in house and the whole service was very affordable and great value. I really can't praise her enough, she is a magician.

I opted for a small bird cage veil attached to a comb. This was custom made for me by Abigail…."

"I wouldn't say we had a strong 'theme' per se although we did have quite a few vintage details. Overall, we wanted a relaxed feel to our day that hopefully was beautiful but not overstyled.

There were quite a few sentimental influences. I lost my Nanny last year to cancer which was a difficult time for us all. I wanted to acknowledge her in the details of the day. Her floral tea set featured in the floral decorations and some of the material used in the bunting was hers. She loved lavender and so every table had a potted lavender plant which also contained the table number flag.

Nanny also featured along with our other absent relatives in a "wish you were here" board that we placed on the sweet bar. The pictures we used for this were all wedding photos. This was a real talking point and now hangs on the wall in our living room as a lovely souvenir…"

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

"Whilst planning, keep in mind  the following three things:

1. Will this add value to our wedding day?
2. Will I or anyone else actually remember this subtle detail or colour scheme in 30 years time?
3. Can you delegate a particular task to someone else who will do it better than you?

Your friends and family have multiple skills and talents – use them! However, just ensure you are playing to someone's strengths in the tasks you entrust to them.

It is very easy to get carried away with the romance and the excitement of "the wedding" but this really shouldn't be your focus. The thing that was wonderful about our wedding was the bit where we actually got married with  everybody we loved around us. It is so rare to have all your friends and family from all different areas of your life in one place . Stay focused on the getting married part and enjoy the party. Don't bankrupt yourselves for meaningless 'details' – it really isn't worth it and you won't remember them in 30 years time…"

  1. Absolutely gorgeous wedding! What a lovely couple! I love the 1940s style! I’m having my dress made as I couldn’t find anything like what I wanted in the shops and it is a kind of a mix between 40s and 50s. I just love the glamour of that era! It looks like a happy and fun-filled day – great feature! :) x

  2. This article is really worth reading, it has too much details in it and yet it is so simple to understand, Thanks for sharing the picture it has great detail in it and i really appreciate your true artistic work!
