Tiffany Blue & Fifties Movies ~ A Vintage Style Electric Cinema Wedding…

Morning all! How was your weekend? I'm wasting no time getting right back into wedding blog fab-ness this morning with the most wonderful fifties movies inspired wedding – these photographs are bursting with colour and style inspiration, and I hope you love it as much as I do.

After eleven years of being together, David and Karen finally tied the knot on 9th June at The Electric Cinema in Birmingham, followed by a reception at Dorridge Village Hall in Solihull.  These photographs of their beautiful day were taken by the lovely Joanna Brown

"We both love movies and the cinema, and I in particular love the
1950’s era. We wanted our day to epitomise the ‘glamorous heydays’ of
the past, in the form of a big party for all our lovely friends and
family – a relaxed day full of fun rather than formality."

"My brother Mark is a graphic design artist
and he created a retro-feel cinema poster for us (see above), which was displayed
outside and around the Electric, as well as serving as our backdrop on
the stage. We bought white letters to personalise the sign above the box
office (where guests picked up their order of service). We had two
directors chairs on the stage with ‘I Do’ and ‘I Do Too’ on the back,
and one of my dear friends made the confetti cones from photos found in
an old cinema poster auction catalogue I bought from ebay.

The confetti
itself was made from chopped up tickets, as close to tiffany blue as she
could get. On arrival at the reception, we treated our guests to a
Pimms or two, served from the stable door of ‘Audrey’ the vintage
caravan
. For the reception venue,
we wanted a vintage feel, particularly influenced by coffee and ice
cream bars of the 1950s, but without the obvious ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’
element."

"I bought a basic birdcage veil from a maker on Ebay and had a
headpiece made from the Tiffany Blue negligee, which was finished off
with a vintage earring in the centre."

"My wedding dress is an original 1959 lace dress from Unforgettable Vintage Bridal Gowns, near Leamington Spa.  Sisters Hannah and Rae, who own the business, are a complete dream to work with and we
hit it off from the word go.

Cake and tea are always on offer, and I
felt like I’d known them for ages. They gave me a photo of the original
(and one and only) owner of the dress on her wedding day, along with a
letter written by her daughter, both of which we displayed at our
reception.  I felt very privileged to wear it – and a bit apprehensive,
as I planned to have the dress altered from its original state.

'Our lovely friend Amanda is one of the partners of AVA Event
Styling
, so they were the obvious choice to
help us with transforming the village hall.  Alongside the tiffany blue (which was a must), we chose ivory (to
match my dress) and a poppy red.

The Boutique Baking Company supplied
all the vintage crockery and cutlery, while the children had matching
melamine plates, beakers and wire cake stands.  We needed to fill the
village hall on a large scale, so AVA decorated it with tissue pompoms
and paper honeycomb balls , which were lovingly assembled (all 140 of
them!) by friends in the week leading up to the wedding."

"We wanted to
cover the 1970s-esque mustard yellow curtains at the hall, and acquired
some large sheets of white material to do this. Our white linen
tablecloths, napkins and chair covers were hired for a knockdown ‘DIY’
price via ebay, as we didn’t want the sashes on the chairs.

Place names
and the table plan were made from copies of the cinema tickets, tied to
cups for the adults and attached to gift bags for the children. Other
elements included vintage toast racks to display cards, screens with
photos of the two of us through the years, and a Polaroid camera and
pinboard for photos / messages (although this was hijacked by one
aspiring young photographer who ended up taking lots of quirky photos of
the day!)."

"I
knew I definitely wanted a 1950’s dress with chiffon in it, and I
wanted it to look similar to the dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the film
‘Funny Face’.  There was a definite ‘Tiffany’ theme running through the
wedding (Davey B proposed to me outside Tiffany & Co. In London
where I got my engagement ring) – and so I decided early on that Tiffany
Blue would be my accent colour.

I also adored the neckline on this
dress, which was carried through some detailing across the skirt. I
finally found the chiffon for the sash and headpiece in exactly the
colour I needed on my 2nd visit to Vintage Bridal Gowns – a 1960’s
negligee they had for sale!"

"I didn’t have any bridesmaids – just my two gorgeous boys Harvey
(8) and Jacob (4) as pageboys  /ringbearers.  Their shoes just had to be
tiffany blue converse, as I wanted them to be as relaxed as possible
throughout the day, so they would enjoy it too.  Their suits were from Next and I got them some shirts form Autograph at Marks & Spencer…"

"After lusting after a pair of
highly-unobtainable-due-to-budget-restrictions Aruna Seth Tiffany blue
beauties, I found a pair of perfect 1950’s style court shoes on ebay for
a ridiculously small sum of money.  I finished these off with a pair of
vintage clip-on earrings for with costume pearls which I bought for
£2.50.

Much glue and patience was employed for those shoes!"

"The ‘piece de resistance’ for the children was a candy
buffet.  We planned to open it at 7pm, giving the children a chance to
eat at least some healthy food beforehand.  To avoid early nibblers, we
devised an ‘I Spy’ wedding game which was handed to the children as they
got off the bus at the reception.

Once they had completed it, they
were given a candy buffet voucher by one of the ushers, asking them to
keep hold of it and present it at the allotted time in exchange for a
bag of sweets.  Unbelievably, not one sweet was touched before 7pm!"

"The inspiration for our invitations was an actual cinema ticket
from the Electric, and we carried this theme throughout the day.  We
used an old typewriter font on everything, and our invitations, order of
service, vows, etc. were all on tiffany blue card stock from an on-line
stationery supplier.  It was important that we kept a vintage feel for
the ceremony at the Electric."

"We danced to ‘Moondance’ by Van Morrison. We had made the effort to
get some dance lessons, as we wanted to give our guests yet another
surprise and treat them to a bit of a show – I’ve attended too many
weddings where the happy couple just shuffle round the dance floor and
everyone gets very bored very quickly."

"Our Florist was AVA Event Styling = we didn’t
want to go overboard and overwhelm the tables, so went for two 1950’s
mantle vase arrangements at the Electric and numerous small arrangements
in various pressed glass containers at the reception.

Buttonholes were
simple ivory miniature flowers with a blue ribbon and the obligatory
cinema ticket tucked in at the back. Corsages were on pearl bracelets to
match mine, and my bouquet was a globe of harlequin roses – just enough
red to provide the accent colour, and very ‘Alice in Wonderland’ –
amazing flowers!"

"I happened upon our photographer, Joanna Brown, via Emma Case’s website,
and just fell in love with her vintage style of photography.  We knew
it would fit our day perfectly.  We took a weekend out to travel down
south to meet her and instantly felt like we’d known her forever.

We
knew that we would really feel relaxed and comfortable with her on the
day, and that she would be loads of fun. As a result, we have some
amazing photos to treasure."

"We chose the cinema because we love movies and especially love watching them at the Electric! It’s an amazing venue and the oldest working cinema in the UK.  We chose the village hall because we wanted an informal, relaxed reception venue which we could decorate ourselves.  It was the only village hall for miles around with loads of grassed space for loads of children to run around – and it comes with its own fully-staffed bar."

"We asked all our guests to send us photos of themselves and their
families in advance of the wedding.   Dave put together a beautifully
moving photo montage to music with these, as something for people to
watch while they were assembling  for the ceremony.  Once everyone took
their seats, we played a special film of wedding clips from movies,
which the Electric had put together for us in order to ‘set the scene’.
After the ceremony we put on a film for the children, and supplied
popcorn in cones made from Beano comic wrapping paper…"

"My lovely Dad gave me away, a week before his 70th birthday, so
it was special for both him and me. Harvey and Jacob carried our rings
tied to little knitted ‘cupcakes’ in our exact wedding colours – found
on a school holiday daytrip to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.

I chose Audrey Hepburn singing ‘Moon River’ – from the film
‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ to walk 'down the aisle' – so very apt. It is
also quite a short song and fitted perfectly with the number of steps to
negotiate in the cinema! We went out to ‘Never Can Tell’ by Chuck Berry
– again a 1950’s song linked to one of our favourite films."

"We have been together for eleven years and were introduced
by a mutual friend (who got a special mention on the day).  Dave
proposed five years ago outside Tiffany & Co. In London, and it took
us that long to get around to making the wedding actually happen.
Having children and renovating our old house seemed to take priority
(along with a multitude of other things in any busy family life), so our
wedding was finally some time to celebrate the two of us as well.

We
wrote our own vows and as much of the celebrant’s wording as we could,
as well as sourcing the readings, as it was really important for us to
take time out to devise our own ceremony – from our hearts.  It was
incredibly stressful planning a wedding with a family and full-time work
to juggle, but it is absolutely fantastic that now our two boys, as
well as us, have wonderful memories of the day which we can share
together."

"Our ‘treats’ for the adults were the various surprises and
special touches we planned throughout the day, so we didn’t create
wedding favours as such.  Each child had a ‘goodie bag’ at their place
setting with vintage / old fashioned toys (nothing plastic!), as well as
activities to do at the table, pencil pots, etc (all of which matched
the decor).  I found a 1950’s
paper activity sheet from an American diner for sale on ebay and bought
it for about £1.50.  I then scanned it, photoshopped it so the colour
matched the Tiffany Blue, and printed a copy out for each child. It gave
the tables a real retro touch."

"We hired vintage buses to transport our guests to the Electric
Cinema and back to the village hall again after the ceremony. We
contacted Wythall Transport Museum
which is run almost entirely by volunteers  – not only were the
vehicles extremely reasonable to hire, but the care and attention of the
people providing them really showed.

We had a driver and a ‘clippy’
(conductor) on each bus, and they were more than happy to stay around to
let us take lots of photos, etc. We were totally bowled over by their
generosity.  In the morning the bridal party, Harvey and Jacob and
Dave’s Mum & Dad all used our rather lovely silver Jaguar limousines
– Dave’s family come from a long line of funeral directors, so they
were quite easy to come by!

"Because we had a tea party with LOTS of cake as our Wedding Breakfast, we didn’t want even more cake, so ordered a stack of cheeses from the Cheese Shed,
which Vickie from AVA styled for us in our colours.  We wanted a
rustic, informal feel and she added to the whole thing with loads of
homemade chutneys and pickles, plus biscuits and homemade bread.

"The most important things to us when we started planning the
wedding were fun, family, friends and food.   Our friends mucked in and
helped us so, so much in the run-up to the day, undertaking all sorts of
tasks and making things which were vital contributions to the day, for
which we are eternally grateful.  It meant that lots of people felt
truly involved and seemed to enjoy the day more, because they were part
of its creation."

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

I booked all the ‘big’
things (venues, food, band, photographer) about a year in advance, so I
didn’t have to panic.  Then it was lists, lists, lists all the way!  I
am an obsessive planner, and I started with a long ‘to do’ list split
into various deadlines about nine months before.  As I worked through
this, it was constantly updated so I didn’t forget a single thing. This
obsessiveness was passed onto our long-suffering ushers who each had a
2-page action document on the day – they all performed well beyond the
call of duty….

…however, it did mean that our essentially ‘DIY’ day
ran pretty much without a problem.  Our mantra was Happy Children =
Happy Parents, so I would advise if you have children coming to your
wedding, you go the extra mile to keep the children entertained – it’s
really worth it."
