Coquette
Paper & Press
is a boutique stationer, specialising in wedding stationery. They also create birth announcements, social stationery and branding for
businesses in the wedding industry. They're no strangers to Love My Dress, having previously had their paper goods featured here and here. It really is some of the prettiest paper we've seen.

The company was started in 2010 by Kate Taylor, who continues to handle all of the design work, alongside studio manager Lucy who takes care of logistics and customer service. Coquette Paper & Press work with the best independent print
studios in the UK for both digital and letterpress printing, sourcing
all their card stock and envelopes themselves to ensure they're using the best
products available at all times. Green thinking is also important to the brand, working as they do with mills that produce FSC certified papers and using packaging made
from post-consumer waste wherever possible.

Kate told me more about the business and her passion for paper…

How
did Coquette Paper & Press come about?

'I started Coquette
Paper & Press
while I was training as a makeup artist. I'd
previously been working as a graphic designer and
family members started turning to me when they couldn't
find wedding stationery that fit the vision they had for their wedding day, so my
evenings were spent rifling through paper samples and hunting for
fonts. It soon grew to be far more than an evening hobby!'

What
do you love about your work?

'I'm
just a teeny bit obsessed with typography and paper, so it really is the
perfect job! I love working with couples to bring all the different elements of
their day together through their stationery. It's amazing how creative some of
my clients have been in terms of how they've incorporated their paper goods into their
wedding day.'

'What you see on the website is just a small selection of what we
offer. I love working on bespoke projects with
couples. Because of the intensive nature of such work, I only take on a handful each
year, but they always bring amazing results. Last year I worked with a couple
getting married in Singapore, and we created a 5 piece invitation set which
combined letterpress and watercolour, and was finished with hand-painted edges
and envelopes lined in handmade paper. It was a LOT of work, but the results
were beautiful.'

What
inspires you when it comes to your work? Are there any designers/artists you
particularly admire?

'I'm
constantly on the lookout for new fonts from my favourite foundries as well as
up and coming or student designers. Fonts can play a huge part in inspiring the
direction of a design and I like finding fonts that haven't become mainstream
yet. I also collect vintage ephemera, although not all of my designs would be
considered 'vintage' they may have originally been inspired by a piece of
vintage wallpaper or an old book.'

'I love Persephone Books, who reprint
forgotten literature, mostly written by women, from the inter-war
period. The cover design, typography and endpapers are
so beautifully considered. Packaging design is also a huge
inspiration, from soap and perfume to fruit papers and cheese wrappers; nothing
is too odd to make it onto my pin board!'

'Fashion
also plays a huge role – colours, textures and patterns. The inspiration folders
on my desktop are filled with street style images and editorial shoots. I love
unexpected combinations of print and colour; it always gets my creative juices
flowing!

How
would you describe your signature style? What type of couple is drawn to
Coquette Paper & Press?

'My
signature style is very much a hybrid, mixing Edwardian, mid-century and modern
influences. For instance, the typography and framing on my new Evelyn
design is inspired by Edwardian pamphlets, but the colour palette is taken from
a pair of trousers from J Crew's S/S 2013 collection!'

'Coquette
Paper & Press
couples definitely know their own mind, and the bride and
groom are both very involved in planning their wedding – I deal with
grooms almost as much as brides. They know their design references, what they
like and what they don't, and always bring a touch of creative thinking to
their choices. Above all, they're always a pleasure to work with!'

Can
you provide a price guide?

'Invitations
start at about £3 and Save the Dates at £2.40. Bespoke designs start at £350.
Our website only shows a fraction of the pieces that couples can order. We're
constantly adding new products to the line-up, but if you can't see what you're
looking for, just get in touch, we don't bite!'

Where
are you located/where do you ship to?

'We're
based in London (and sometimes Devon!). We ship all over the world, no address
is too far. We've worked with brides in the US, Australia, Greece, Germany and
Switzerland, as well as the UK. And we're always happy to incorporate foreign
text into our designs, we've worked in Cryllic, Hebrew, Cantonese and Arabic
before.'
