How did you get into wedding photography?
'I started taking pictures more thoughtfully in 2008 when I decided not to continue on my path to become an architect. I became obsessed quite quickly and was consumed by a desire to learn and improve. As my Mum says, “Sometimes on the way to a dream, you get lost and find a better one”. I shot my first wedding in September 2009 and haven't looked back!'
'I have a bit of a soft spot for truth and therefore love documentary photography, which is why I was drawn to weddings in the first place. The challenge of capturing that precise moment when everyone bursts into laughter or when the groom catches his first glimpse of the bride is what really drives me when I’m working at a wedding. These are the moments which I know will mean most to my clients.'
'Knowing the photographs I take will create memories which will last a lifetime is pretty mind-blowing. Photographing a wedding is a huge responsibility, but on the other hand there's a feeling you get when you know you've nailed a portrait which will be passed down to your clients' children and grandchildren and it's so rewarding!'
What inspires you when it comes to your work?
'I try not to look at other wedding photographers’ work much because I believe it’s important to find your own way. I think my wedding work is primarily inspired by my clients. It's great getting to know a couple and learning what it is that drives them and makes them happy. Each of my clients is unique and I want more than anything to put them at ease and encourage them to have fun with photography throughout the process.'
How would you describe your signature style?
'I'm not sure my style falls into one specific category, it's a mix of approaches and constantly evolving. I like my photographs to be clean and colour-correct; for me it's not about the processing, it's about the composition and the emotion in the picture. My objective is always to capture a moment of truth and beauty in a single frame.'
'I guess this is why I'm currently enjoying a bit of a love affair with film; I think it's pretty magical and I love the distinctive quality it gives my photographs, but more than anything I love the way it forces you to think carefully about every frame before you press the shutter. I definitely think shooting film here and there has made me a better photographer.'
If you weren't a wedding photographer, what would you be?
'This is really tricky, as I can't imagine not feeling inclined to take pictures on a day to day basis. I love history and also work for a charity called 'D-Day Revisited' organising pilgrimages for Normandy Veterans each year over the anniversary of D-Day. Consequently I get involved in a fair amount of charity events to do with supporting ex-servicemen in and around the North West. I'm often thinking 'if I had more time I'd love to organise this or that event for the vets', so I'd probably move further down that route.'
Can you provide a price guide?
'My wedding collections start from £1500 for six hours coverage and a disc of high resolution digital negatives or a beautiful handcrafted album. I've tried to keep things simple and cut out all the hidden extras, so all photography collections include an initial consultation, complimentary engagement shoot, all mainland UK travel expenses and online galleries for 9 months. Readers can contact me for a full price list.'
Where are you located and how far will you travel?
'I currently divide my time between London and Cheshire. I love adventures of all shapes and sizes, so I really enjoy shooting weddings all over the UK. So much so that all travel expenses are built into my prices across mainland Britain, so for all weddings (from Land's End to John o'Groats!) my clients don't pay any extra to get me there! I'd be thrilled to shoot a destination wedding too... one day!'
