Bridal Inspiration Board #56 ~ Something Blue…

We are welcoming back to the blog this morning Michelle and Vicki, those lovely event designers and stylists from Pocketful of Dreams. And as ever, they are bringing you some fabulous bridal mood boards, inspired today by the Spring catwalks and with a focus on one of my favourite ever shades, blue. Talking of which, did you see the bride in yesterday's real wedding feature in her lovely pale blue silk chiffon Belle & Bunty wedding dress and a pretty circlet of flowers in her hair?

As creative event designers, we gather inspiration literally everywhere from unusual architecture to our travel adventures but one place that is always sure to inspire us is the world of fashion.  A great source of new (and sometimes revived!) ideas and colour ways, we often see styles from the catwalk later emerge in the bridal world so a peek into what's happening on the catwalks can be a bit like gazing into a wedding crystal ball!

The Spring 2013 catwalks were awash with a variety of colours including some fabulously strong and energising colours.  A consistent theme across the fashion houses though was the use of palettes that mixed these dynamic, strong colours with neutral shades and this is something that translates into the world of event design.  Pairing bold colours with calmer, softer shades helps to create a balanced look that will ensure you excite and grab the attention of your guests without overwhelming them.

One of our favourite colour combinations from the Spring catwalks was Monaco Blue – a gorgeous, rich shade – and Linen – a light and airy, barely-there colour.  The classic shade of the Monaco blue adds depth to the palette and is a great one for the boys as it lends a masculine edge to proceedings which is effortlessly softened by the romantic hue of the linen.  The overall look: classic – somewhat preppy – sophistication with a soft twist.

Heart For our bridal look, think soft, flowing tulle and organza to create a romantic and sophisticated look just perfect for this design.  A coloured gown would perfectly capture the elegance of this look whilst adding a modern twist.  We adore this Vera Wang nude and blush gown layered with hand-painted flowers and asymmetrical detailing.  Or if you're feeling really brave, then why not consider a flowing gown in blue, such as this beautiful dress from Elie Saab?

Heart And let us not forget the groom, who just has to wear a sharply fitted monaco blue suit paired with brogues for a collegiate look.

Heart Keep hair and make up classic; wear you hair up for an elegant look which shows off your fabulous gown to full effect and make up neutral.  Dark blue painted nails will carry the sophisticated look through but add just a hint of sassiness.

Heart Don't be afraid to play around with non-traditional bridal jewellery and shoes but stick to neutral tones and organic textures and shapes; these dresses are so beautiful they don't need much added to them.

Heart The best thing about using a neutral like Linen is that it's a truly complexion-loving hue, which your maids will love you for!  Echo the classic elegance and sophistication of this look with simple, full length dresses in diaphanous fabrics.

Heart  For decor and details we're aiming for a classically elegant look with a slight collegiate feel.  Flowers should be delicate and understated; opt for white, cream and neutral tones with lots of foliage to add depth and colour.  Present floral displays in cut crystal vases for understated elegance.

Heart  Stained wooden tables would be just perfect for your wedding breakfast with sumptuous raw linen table runners and napkins.  Opt for classic white tableware for your wedding breakfast, with cut crystal glassware if your budget can stretch to it.

Heart  Ditch those ugly chair covers for something far more befitting our understated luxurious look; think chesterfield style dining chairs in a neutral tone with thick, plush cushions.

Heart  For your stationery and paper goods, opt for neutral linen tones in the most luxurious of paper stocks.  Letterpress invitations would fit this look perfectly, adding a sense of understated sophistication.  Use the monaco blue sparingly for maximum impact; dark blue typography or envelope liners would be the perfect accent.  And add cute little paper details such as personalised drink stirrers to inject a fun and fresh edge to proceedings.

Heart  Delicate creations such as mini meringues or macarons would be the perfect sweet treat for your guests; opt for vanilla, earl grey, chai or hazelnut flavours to complement your colour palette.

We love the understated sophistication of this look; it's a great option for those of you wanting a romantic look which won't ostracise your groom.  Now tell us, are there any colours, concepts or ideas that you'd like to see us incorporate into an upcoming inspiration board?  Do let us know as we'd love to create something specific for one of Annabel and Franky's lovely readers. We look forward to hearing from you!
