A Pretty Floral Circlet For A Whimsical, English Country Inspired Wedding Full Of Yellow

Morning all! Did you know, yellow is the most popular colour to have graced our real wedding pages since I started blogging back in 2009? It would appear this sunshiney hue ticks a major styling box for many couples and it's not hard to see why, especially when it comes to pretty Spring weddings like this one.

Kirsty and Gary tied the knot on 25th May 2013 at Burloes Hall in Royston.

"Gary and I met in the pub when Gary was out celebrating his
birthday and we got engaged when Gary proposed four years later on his
birthday.  We didn’t want the 'cookie-cutter' style wedding that sadly so many
venues force you to have (see our 'Words of Wedded Wisdom' at the end).
We had seen seven to eight venues in the area and none of them felt right.
Either the venue wasn’t right or they wouldn’t let you do anything
outside their regular wedding format/package which completely limited
us.

We were starting to lose hope until I came across Burloes Hall,
a beautiful residential house set in an amazing estate we knew the
minute we pulled up that it was something special. We fell in love with
the stunning view over the Hertfordshire countryside and decided that we
wanted to have our wedding right there, on the lawn looking over the
amazing views."

"Burloes Hall is beautiful with formal and wild
gardens and the hall was a lovely space. The owners had only just decided to offer
the venue for weddings (we were the first to book the venue) and they
were offering it as a dry hire site so we could organise the exact
wedding we wanted without having to sign up to any kind of package.

The owner of the house – Lady Katherine Newman and her colleague
Nicole – were just fantastic and so accommodating. There was no
corporate feel to the venue or in the way they run the business (perhaps
because it is Katherine’s home) – it felt more like dealing with family
friends, so refreshing.

As Gary runs his own small (fitness) business,
it was important to us that we kept to a local and small business ethos.
We took this attitude through to our choice of caterers and suppliers
too."

"We included many personal and mostly handmade decorative touches throughout the day.  For example, I
hand made all the invitations, I designed a personalised stamp for the
front and sewed little bunting flags on each invitation.  It took hours
but they looked great!

"Our Florists were Lambert's Flower Company.  I really wanted native flowers in ivory and yellow including roses and a just picked from the garden feel for the bouquets. They also made my beautiful floral circlet."

"The venue Burloes Hall was
so beautiful and particularly the views, so we took our inspiration from
the countryside in styling the space. The wedding had an English country whimsical feel
about it.
I chose yellow for my bridesmaid because it is my
favourite colour but it also went so well with the yellow rape seed
fields. I chose a less formal calf length dresses for them.
  I wanted the flowers to look natural so chose native flowers and went for a ‘just picked’ look for the bouquets.

We decorated the hall ourselves and in keeping with the English country theme, decided to decorate with bunting (meticulously sewn by my mother!), and
put small lavender plants on the tables instead of flower decorations.

We
used small flowers in tea cups to decorate the room and we hung wooden hearts
on the windows and up the stairs.  We wanted a vintage afternoon tea so we (myself, Gary and my
parents) spend months collecting tea cups from second hand and charity
shops. we were also given some by family and friends – they looked
fantastic and they got so many complements.  I made a big heart shape out of willow branches to go on the wall above the fireplace.

My mum did flower decorations for the fireplace – in a giant tea cup in the middle and in milk jugs at either end."

"My dad painted plants pots yellow and planted them with lavender for the tables – they looked great.  I
made the name places from parcel tags with our wedding stamp on one
side and the guests name on the other and tied them to the tea cup
handles.

I made the table plan myself but sewing the table layout onto
some fabric and pining on the names, I mounted it in a large decorative
picture frame.
  I made the name place cards out of parcel tags and decorated them
with tiny bunting flags which mirrored the invitations I had made
myself.

"My mum hand made all the beautiful bunting that used to decorate
the hall. It took her hours but looked amazing and was such a lovely
personal touch. The bunting will also be a fabulous family keepsake.

"The
favours were little potted flowers for the ladies. The idea was that
they could go home and a plant them as a memory of the day.

Our cake was homemade and decorated by my sister with icing and bunting flags on the top saying ‘Gary & Kirsty’."

"My dress was a Benjamin Roberts design that I tried on via The Wedding Centre Waterhouse Street in Hemel Hempstead.  I
tried on a lot of dresses. I knew I liked lace and that I didn’t want
anything too fussy but I went in open minded then soon found there were a
lot of things I didn’t like!

I wasn’t sure about the style until I
found this dress which is cut so elegantly. It is just beautiful. The
lace is so delicate and the fishtail shape subtle."

"Our photographer James was just fantastic. He had enough presence at the wedding to command attention and organise everyone but he was not at all intrusive; you hardly knew he was there. The photos are just beautiful."

"My Dad walked me down the aisle to the sound of 'By Your Side' by Sade.

We chose quite traditional vows (with the exception of any obeying
of course!), because they said everything that we wanted to say."

"We had two readings, the first of which was 'What is Marriage?' (Anonymous)."

'Marriage
is more than the exchange of rings and the sharing of a household; It
is much more than just living together.  It is the desire to truly want
to know and  understand another human being;

to feel and share in that person’s happiness, as well as their pain. Marriage is to never feel alone;
but rather, to know that you always have a friend; a partner in life that you can laugh and cry with.
To know that you always have that special someone to share your innermost thoughts and fears,
and
know that you will be heard. Marriage is helping your partner to be the
absolute best that they can be, while still being able to experience
your own need and goals.

Marriage is love;
true love that goes far beyond passion. It is a love that you can reach for,
in times of crisis as well as joy,
and know it will be there
to comfort and to share.'

"We had a humanist ceremony
but didn’t make a big thing about it being humanist. We just didn’t
want to be restricted the type of ceremony we had what words were said.
The celebrant was amazing. She spent a lot of time with us writing the
ceremony so that it was personal to us and included all the things we
wanted said."

Our second reading was 'These I Can Promise', by Mark Twain'

'I cannot promise you a life of sunshine;
I cannot promise riches, wealth or gold;
I cannot promise you an easy pathway
That leads away from change or growing old. But I can promise all my heart’s devotion;
A smile to chase away your tears of sorrow;
A love that’s ever true and ever growing;
A hand to hold in yours through each tomorrow.'

"My pear necklace was a gift, and I also wore my Grandmother's sapphire ring that now belongs to my sister. So it was my old borrowed and blue all I one."

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

"So many
venues try to push packages on couples and make it very difficult for you to do anything outside their
regular format, but you don’t have to have a cookie cutter wedding
package. Organising the whole day yourself can be done, even if it is a big
commitment.

Make sure you are prepared to do it and have the support of
family and friends. I organised everything from tables and chairs to
toilets to caterers and waitresses, it was hard work but definitely
worth it. We had the exact day we wanted and it is very special to know
it was personal to us and just as we wanted it."

Very wise words of wedded wisdom they are too – in fact, it's reminded me to share this post with you – it's a must read for those who haven't seen it already.

Do you love yellow? Or are you a fan of another colour entirely, and how will yo be working colour in to our wedding day? Use the drop down menu towards the top right of the screen in the right hand column to explore weddings by colour.
