A 1960’s Inspired Gown And Pretty Flower Crown For A Home Garden, Vintage Style Wedding

Oh how I love these photographs!  Chloe and Stuart’s beautiful garden wedding took place on 27 July this year with Chloe’s parents garden playing the beautiful backdrop for their ceremony and reception.  Their day was one of sheer elegance, love and joy – complete with an egg and spoon race thrown in for good measure.

Chloe, a nurse, and Stuart, a Doctor, met at work, when the couple were employed by the Western Infirmary in Glasgow – they told me it was a stereotypical pairing of nurse and doctor.

“We were married in my parent’s garden, in a picturesque little corner of the southern Lake District – it’s a place of beautiful scenery combined with countless happy childhood memories, which meant that there was never any question of the day being held elsewhere.  My Mum and her wonderful vision of combining vintage china, second hand velvet sofas, and an abundance of home made touches inspired the style of the day.”

“We borrowed my parents house to decorate our wedding tipi (ta Mum and Dad!).  All hands were on deck the day before the wedding to carry down sofas, standing lamps and coffee tables  to make a mini living room surrounding the fire pit.  Later on in the evening when it got chilly everyone cozied up on the sofas with blankets.  It was perfect.  The table decorations were kept simple as the picnic hamper took up most of the space at dinner.”

“The photographs are testament to the special place that is my parents home. My
wonderful parents painted the whole house, constructed poly tunnels for
masses of sweet peas to be planted, and even protected the flowerbeds
from frost with fleece blankets!

Apologies to my parents for cramming 35
years worth of “little” jobs in to one year. The results were
incredible; and greatly appreciated.”

“We used Special Event Tipis, I’m so happy that we chose a tipi instead of a marque as I think against the landscape they looked incredible.  David and his team started putting the tipis up 4 days before the wedding and it was so exciting spying over the garden wall to see it all coming together.

David was also on hand on the night, very handy during the thunder storm and downpour!”

“The ladies in my family are obsessed with flowers.  Lots of flowers were always top of the list!, Ideally we would have raided my parents garden, but I didn’t want to leave it bare!  The day we found Flora’s bridesmaid dress, we also met Juliet from Thoughtful Flowers.

I knew she was the lady for us when she got giddy about ideas of a flower arch, crowns and big bouquets of seasonal wild flowers. What she created was out of this world.”

“And oh, the flower crown!   I always knew I wanted flowers in my hair but was a tad worried it could be too much.  I’m so happy that I was brave enough.”

“Whilst our florist, Thoughtful Flowers, took care of most of the flower features, I did keep one floral project to do.  My sister, Mum and I made all of the table decorations.  The day before the wedding we got up
at 6am and picked all the sweetpeas, dahlias, cornflowers, foxgloves and poppies that my mum had planted in the veggie patch especially for the wedding.

We made little posies for the tables and put them in ceramic jugs, tin cups and jam jars.  It was lovely to have some time, just the three of us before everyone got up and the chaos commenced.”

“My sister, Flora, was my one and only bridesmaid.  She look stunning in a blue lace original 1950’s dress that we found at The Vintage Wedding Fair in Chiswick town hall in London.  She teamed it with coral peep toes from Next, bold coral lips and of course, a gorgeous flower crown to match mine.  Total stunner.”

“My Dad gave me away.  When he saw me in my dress he cried, which set me and my sister off too.  Love that man.

I walked down the garden  to ‘Sea of Love’ by Cat Power”.

“My 1960’s inspired dress was from the decades collection by Charlie Brear (formerly ‘The Vintage Wedding Dress Company’).  I am still in love with my dress.  It was simple, timeless, elegant and incredibly comfortable.”

“We set up a mini village fete for the entertainment after the
ceremony.  It was so much fun seeing girls in their high heels getting
involved in the tug of war and egg and spoon race!

“The lovely Lucy from Lucy Says I Do designed all of our stationary.  I discovered Lucy here on Love my Dress when I saw pictures of her beautiful wedding (I may have stolen a lot of her ideas!)  We met Lucy before Christmas last year and within a couple of weeks she had created a stunning stationary suite.  She incorporated beautiful hand drawn images of my parents house and garden, including the odd bee or two from my Dad’s hive!

The complete set including an RSVP luggage label and illustrated invitation and map was tied together with bakers twine: it looked beautiful and set the standard high for the wedding!

We made our own order of service by using a vintage typewriter font on to brown recycled card.  Each order of service had a small glassine envelope of confetti on the back.”

“My very talented and creative Mum made our cake.  It was a three layered sponge cake with cream cheese rough icing.  I gave my Mum a picture and she made it the night before.  That’s how amazing she is.

I know I am a grown woman, but I have a little obsession with Sylvanian Families. So when my sister gave me a Bride and Groom Sylvanian rabbit family for my birthday this year, it was only right to have them on top of the cake.”

“Choosing Dylan and Joanna from Kitchener Photography to document our day was by far the best decision we made.  They are lovely, lovely people and incredibly talented.

They have given us the most beautiful collection of memories that we will treasure forever.  Not only did they take some beautiful pictures of Stuart and I, but they noticed and captured everything that had taken so many months to make and plan.  I would recommend Kitchener Photography to anyone, especially to brides who
have camera shy grooms!”

“My shoes were rather tricky to find.  I needed a small heel  as I didn’t want to be taller than Stuart!  I finally found a nice pink suede, pointed sling back from Office and they were cheap as chips.  Splendid.”

“Gemma from Hair for a Wedding did my hair and make-up.  This woman is an angel!  Not only did she take on my immense head of thick hair, but she magically made my make up stay on all day.   When things started to go a little mad about an hour before the ceremony (my mum was icing the cake, my brothers couldn’t make head nor tail of their kilts and I had forgotten to write my vows out…).  Gemma stayed calm and generally came to the rescue.”

Karen Rhodes Weddings and Events were our caterers.   Our favourite type of summer food is a posh picnic.  We had visions of a big picnic basket on each table and everyone tucking in.  Karen and her team created beautiful picnic baskets crammed with all our favourite food (a huge pork pie, Cumberland sausage, hot smoked salmon, homemade pate baked in kilner jars, lots of cheese, and my mum’s homemade hot chilli jam and onion chutney.)  It was delicious and put together beautifully.”

“We collected china teacups and side plates for every table setting and my mum made liberty silk napkins with ‘Stuart and Chloe say I do’ labels for all the guests.  We used embroidery hoops for the table numbers, and we sewed the numbers made out of buttons on to embroidered tablecloths.  This was a cheep and fun project!”

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

“Try not to get your knickers in a twist over the smaller things.  It will work out and everyone will notice all the little things that you spent hours fussing over!

Walking down the aisle, seeing Stuart waiting underneath the flower arch and looking around at all our guests was my favourite part of the day.  Everyone looked amazing and it hit me all at once how happy I
was.

We wrote our own wedding vows which we kept a secret from each other until the day. Simple but poignant. I would recommend writing your own vows to any couple.  Be brave and give it a go.   Also, we didn’t hire an official event planner.  We had my Mum!  The poor woman was bombarded with emails and pictures full of my ideas for our big day. She made everything happen.”

  1. What an absolutely beautiful wedding. So many wonderful personal details and so much happiness radiating from every picture. Wow.
I’m also planning a wedding in a family garden and have been dreaming of floral arches – that one is a STUNNER!
And love the idea of bringing furniture from the house outside – may need to sound out my grandparents on that one!
    Just gorgeous!

  2. What a pretty and fun wedding. Those flowers are just beautiful! The flower crown was perfect for the outdoor setting and really brought all the floral touches together. Great images and that photo of her dad at the bottom of the stairs is priceless! Congratulations x

  3. How gorgeous, the flowers are so pretty! I love the personal touch and how she returned to her childhood home to get married too.

  6. Oh the flowers, the flowers! And all the love! Such a beautiful wedding! *sigh*
I especially love the photos of the bride kissing her elderly relatives {grandmothers perhaps?}. Those are photos that will only become more special as the years go by.

  7. If I were you Tabs, I’d send this wedding to your florist for inspiration, it’s such a pretty arch, as are the flowers in her hair (do it!).

  10. This has to be the most beautiful wedding I have ever been lucky enough to lay my eyes on, such stunning photography but you can just tell it was a truly wonderful day for everyone involved.
I am somewhat biased as I have some very similar ideas for my own upcoming wedding but due to the recent sale of my family home it will be relocating to a village hall or something similar hehe.
Congratulations to you both, may you have a wonderful, long and happy life together! X

  11. Umm…is there something in the air at the moment? I don’t know what is going on but you seem to be publishing more insanely beautiful weddings than ever on love my dress right now!! Ohhhh I have only been married 3 months and 3 days but your current posts are making me want to do it all over again so desperately – my next wedding (to the same man, of course ;)) will definitely feature a flower crown and floral arrangements just like this one!!! They are just divine! All of your features over the last year or two have obviously been a raging success to inspire all of 2013’s summer brides to such a pinnacle of wedding gorgeousness! Congratulations you!xx

  12. I know, we are so very lucky to receive such incredibly beautiful weddings to share!

  13. Such a beautiful wedding, exactly what we are going for at my aunties estate. I would love love love to get some more details on how the food was served and arranged.. We are desperate to pull off the “posh picnic” idea too but are struggling to do it justice as we would like it to still be formal and maybe part served/part dig in style.. Help needed 🙂
    Thank you in advance,
    Emma x

  14. Wow, those flowers are gorgeous – looking for inspiration for my sister’s vintage wedding and this is spot on, the bride looks stunning – beautifully shot too.
