Beautiful Super 8 and 16mm Wedding Films by Cine Reportage

It’s time for us to introduce you to another of our immensely talented sponsors here at Love My Dress. This post is for my fellow cinephiles and anyone who might be interested in commissioning a beautiful Super 8 film to record their wedding day.

In his own words Will from Cine Reportage is ‘totally, head-over-heels in love with shooting on film’.

‘We use Super 8 and 16mm film, they are similar, but different.
Super
8 has a unique, tactile flickeriness and grain; it’s incredibly
evocative and nostalgic. For many years it’s been a staple choice for
artists, music video directors and fashion filmmakers craving its
unique, tactile aesthetic. 16mm has all the same filmic
loveliness, but a glossier, higher resolution look. It’s also much
better in low light – we’ve had great results shooting inside a tipi lit
only with fairy lights!’

‘We use the very same
kinds of filmstock that some great feature films are shot in, like City
of God, Black Swan, The Hurt Locker and The Wrestler, to name but a few.’

‘I feel privileged to be doing what I do. We are invited to witness and
record incredibly important and intimate moments in peoples’ lives. I
can’t think of many circumstances in commercial film production where a
client could be so happy with your work that they shed tears of joy! It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.’

Will’s obvious passion for his craft translates into some of the most wonderful wedding films Annabel and I have ever seen. Will told me more about how Cine Reportage came about and filled me in on his incredible collection of vintage cameras…

‘I studied Fine Art at Kingston University. Whilst there, I picked up a cheap Super 8 camera from eBay. I wanted to use it to make stop-frame animations recording the process of painting, but it soon became more about the film than the painting.

‘In 2009, my partner Caroline and I offered to shoot a few friends’ weddings on Super
8 as gifts.  We loved doing it and it’s what we’ve done ever since.
Cine Reportage became my full-time job in 2011.’

‘We think the most beautiful moments are those of real, natural emotion,
so we don’t boss people around and we are as unobtrusive as possible.
We’re there to record the day, not to direct it.’

It is this, and the fact they shoot a lot of film {typically 10-12 rolls of Super 8 and 3 or 4 rolls of 16mm} that makes Cine Reportage really special within the world of 8mm and 16mm filmmaking.

‘We could easily shoot a lot less, direct people a lot more and make much more money, but we’re really passionate about making the best wedding films that we possibly can.’

‘We edit the footage down to a 10-15 minute film, sound-tracked to the music of your choice, plus a shorter 3-4 minute version which is ideal for sharing online or to watch as a quick pick-me-up in a quiet moment.’

‘I have a growing collection of around 30 Super 8 and 16mm cameras, dating from the 1930s to the early 1980s. We use many of them regularly – you can see some of my favourites on the camera page of our website.’

If you’d like to find out more or see specific examples of each format please get in touch with Will using the details on the Cine Reportage contact page. We also encourage you to keep up-to-date with Will and Caroline via facebook, twitter and the Cine Reportage blog.

Much love,

Franky
