A Candy Anthony Bride And Her Pretty Pastel Colour Inspired Spring Time Wedding

Happy lunch time folks. Hopefully by now you'll have had a few minutes to soak in all the prettiness of this morning's beautiful outdoor Humanist and Vintage inspired wedding.  This lunch time though, it's all about Ria and Andrew, who tied the knot on 5 May 2013 with a day full of pretty pastel Spring time shades.  It was important to the couple that they kept within their budget and so they opted for several DIY projects and low cost alternatives.  Their wedding took place at Cardy Net House in Fife.

"Andrew and I met at a party in 2006 and got engaged after about three and
a half years. Our engagement story isn’t very good because although
Andrew had big romantic plans, he got too excited after getting the ring
and ended up proposing in our house after he’d picked it up!  We
then had quite a busy time as we both went back to study and moved from
Scotland to London, so we were engaged for three and a half years
before the wedding and spent about 18 months of that time planning it.

I was so inspired by wedding blogs. I read Love My Dress every
day for about a year! I created mood boards and as it was Spring
I
wanted it to be light and airy with lots of pastel shades and mismatched
patterns. Luckily I like crafting which was good for our
budget and I really enjoyed making lots of personal touches."

"We wanted to get married close to our hometown in Fife as this is
where most of our guests come from and we wanted to make it easy and
reasonably inexpensive for them to get there and enjoy the day. It was
also important to us to find a venue that we could personalise, to create
an informal and fun atmosphere.

I also really wanted to get married next
to the sea, and the views from the Net House are amazing! It looks right
onto the sea and during the ceremony we had the doors open and could
hear the waves. The house was originally a fishing net factory and is
now hired out for holiday lets; it isn’t a wedding venue which I quite
liked the idea of. However this gave us a lot more work to do as we were
only able to see it a couple of times and obviously there was no staff
to help! I spent a lot of time planning how it would be laid out and
decorated."

"Thankfully it all came together, with a lot
of help from our friends, the night before, clearing all the furniture
into a storeroom and hanging all fifty pom poms!

I did originally want
to have the whole day there but there wouldn’t have been the space to
have a sit down meal with all of our guests, so we had our reception at
the Old Manor Hotel, Lundin Links, purely because it is very close by.

We had a humanist wedding ceremony. Neither of us are religious and I
really like the personal touch that humanism brings. Also you can have a
legally binding humanist wedding ceremony absolutely anywhere in
Scotland, the venue doesn’t have to be licensed. Gillian, our celebrant,
was fantastic. We met with her several times and she incorporated a lot
about how we met, who we are as a couple and what marriage means to us"

"She also asked if we’d like to each tell her three things that we love
about each other, which we only both heard on the day. It was lovely.
After this we opted for the standard vows as I knew I would be self
conscious enough standing up there, I didn’t want to have to say more
than was necessary! We also had a hand-fasting which is an ancient celtic
ritual that involves holding a piece of tartan or ribbon each during
the vows and tying a knot with it. It’s thought to be where the phrase
‘tying the knot’ comes from.

We used tartan to represent our family
names and have kept our knot which I plan to get framed."

"My dress was by Candy Anthony
and I purchased it from their store in London.  I wanted a short dress
and I really like the 50s style as I think it suits my short figure. I
only went to a couple of shops and I absolutely loved all of the dresses
at Candy Anthony
. They were quite expensive in relation to our budget however, so initially I looked into getting a dress made that I could afford.

However after a few weeks of indecision  Candy Anthony
announced that they were having a sale and I went back and bought
the dress! I loved the lacy top, the bow at the back and the four layer
petticoat. It was great for dancing in!

My little birdcage veil was by Arabella Bridal."

"Planning how we’d style the venue was quite difficult, again
because the Net House isn’t a wedding venue I had nothing to go on!
However this was probably the most enjoyable part of planning and I
spent hours scouring the internet and planning the décor. We got pom
poms from Pipii and Deco Pom Poms.

Pipii was great for lots of little things. I got white screens from Ebay which
we used to separate the space in the Net House. These were decorated
with bunches of gypsophila and photos of us from each year of our
relationship."

"We hired the
chairs from Pretty Settings.
I roped some friends and family into transporting the flowers from the
Net House to the Old Manor after the ceremony (why pay for two sets of
flowers?!) and these became the table centre pieces. We also bought a
ridiculous amount of candles from Ikea for the evening!"

"I had seen a lot of Sophie of I Heart Flowers work online, including on Love My Dress,
and loved her style. As we live in London it was difficult to find a
local florist in Fife and didn’t want to take a risk so I spoke to
Sophie on the phone about the style and colours of our wedding and I
didn’t meet her or see the flowers until the day. I think she did a
brilliant job, I loved my flowers! I dried out my bouquet and still have
it in a vase in our bedroom, there was no way I was doing the
traditional toss, it was too pretty!

I wanted mint green
jugs for the flowers but couldn’t find any so bought mismatched cream
ones on ebay and gumtree and painted them. I also collected lots of jars
and bottles for about a year and spent days sticking lace to them. I
bought about 12 bunches of gypsophila from Morrisons the day before the
wedding (it’s very cheap!) and arranged it in the jars and tied it to
the chairs."

"I
wanted fun colourful shoes and spent months looking for mint green ones
before I found these by
Vivienne Westwood. One of the best men asked me afterwards if I’d
planned the whole day around my shoes as they matched the pom poms
perfectly. I think I subconsciously did!"

"Finding bridesmaids dresses was very difficult living 500 miles away from my two bridesmaids! I sort of picked the dress from Vivien of Holloway Dresses on
my own and sent my bridesmaids photos (sorry ladies!) then asked them
to pick the colour they wanted and we ordered them online. I wanted them
to be patterned and preferably different from each other, so they
fitted the bill."

"I used a picnic basket as a card box and
decorated it with bunting and surrounded it with pictures of our parents and
grandparents weddings.  I got this idea from Love My Dress and it was
really nice to make a nod to our families’ marriages.

"Our friend Paul of Ember Creative is a graphic designer and he did our invitations.
Andrew drew an illustration of us, a simple motif making fun of our
height difference, which became known as the ‘wedding logo’!

The logo
then appeared on our menus, table planner, CDs, guest book, invites and
envelopes. Andrew made the table planner which became his project after I
tasked him with coming up with an original idea for it. I think he did
really well!"

"Our photographers were Mirrorbox Photography
We would highly recommend Sam and Sequoia from Mirrorbox. We love the
photos and it was great having two photographers as they got so many
shots from different angles. They were really good fun on the day too
and put us completely at ease."

"Another bonus to hiring Cardy Net House
was that we had it for a whole week afterwards so it was our little
mini honeymoon. It also meant we could have a party after the reception
ended at midnight, so a lot of our guests came back to the Net House and
we went on until 4.30am.
I stayed at the Net House the night before so I didn’t need a car.
Andrew drove himself there in our Punto!

This was something I really
didn’t feel the need to spend money on, but Andrew’s dad kindly booked a
white London taxi to take us to the Old Manor from the Net House, and
my sister-in-law’s mum drove the bridesmaids in her BMW."

"I wore a pearl bracelet given to me by my brother and sister-in-law
when I was their bridesmaid, and pearl earrings that were a graduation
present from my parents."

"There was only one option for Andrew: he had to wear a kilt in his
family name tartan. He wore the Cumming hunting tartan, with tweed
jacket and waistcoat, all bought from The Kilt Store in Edinburgh."

"My dad gave me away. To be honest I don’t believe in the whole
giving away thing but I was prepared to rein in my feminism to keep
everyone happy!

The Net House had a grand piano, so we hired a
talented pianist Andrew knows and asked him to play a short instrumental
version of Cinematic Orchestra’s ‘To Build a Home’ as I came out. He
played for about half an hour before the ceremony and about an hour
afterwards too.

I didn’t get to hear much of it as I obviously wasn’t in
the room before the ceremony and afterwards we were whisked off for
photographs, but I have been assured it was very good!"

"We
asked our six year old flowergirl, Fern, to read the Robert Burns poem, A
Red Red Rose
. She memorised it before hand and stood up and recited it in
front of everyone. She was brilliant!"

I always love it when I see the children have been thoughtfully catered for at a wedding – bravo Ria and Andrew!

"Our favours were little jars of fudge. We bought the jars from
ebay and made fabric toppers. We got stickers from pipii and Andrew
handwrote everyone’s names on them. For the small children I got
crayons, colouring books and bubbles, and Andrew made blank print outs
of the wedding logo for them to colour in. I got a little teddy bear for
my niece who was too small to eat or colour in!

"When it came to catering for our guests, I bought canapés from Marks and Spencer and we had a three course
meal at The Old Manor Hotel, then bacon rolls in the evening.

My friend Sarah made the cake. I sent her a photo of a cake I’d
seen on Pinterest and asked for one layer of chocolate, one vanilla and
one lemon. She did an amazing job! I made the bunting toppers from
fabric and cake dowelling rods."

"For our first dance, we played ‘Thinking Of You’ by Paul
Weller, mixed into the original track by Sister Sledge as we didn’t want
it to be slow and cheesy for too long! We then encouraged everyone to
join us when the original version kicked in – it’s such a fun, upbeat
song with a great melody.  And of course, we had to have a ceilidh and hired Freereelin’.
They were great! We booked them for ninety minutes as I feel that is
long enough to ceilidh dance because it’s pretty hard going, although we
managed an epic ‘Strip The Willow’ that stretched outside the function
room! Andrew is a DJ, so he made a mix of music which we knew would get
people up and dancing (everything from Fleetwood Mac to Run DMC to The
Smiths to Daft Punk).

Freereelin’ kindly let us use their equipment and we
just plugged an iPod in and let it go. The dancefloor was full all night
which I think meant people enjoyed it; I hope so! We also burned the mix
onto CDs for guests to take at the end of the night, and uploaded the
entire mix online for download. We thought it would be a fun memento of
the day!"

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

"Everyone says it but the day does goes past
in a flash so enjoy it!   Pull in favours where you can and don’t be shy
to haggle on prices, we saved quite a bit of money doing this.
  It
wasn’t until the day that I realised I had imagined the whole thing
from the guests point of view, remember you’re going to be the bride!
This means you will miss the post ceremony drinks while you get the
photos done, but you can always make up for that later.

My favourite part of the day was the ceremony followed closely by
the dancing. We love a good dance! It was great to see everyone having a
good time too. It was only at this point that I really relaxed as I was
so conscious of sticking to the timeline I had prepared and making sure
it was all running smoothly. On reflection I probably should have
relaxed a bit more!

I
visited Love My Dress when I was planning my wedding and the thing I
liked most was the real weddings. They were great for inspiration!"

I adore Spring weddings, and this one is delightful. Huge thanks Ria and Andrew for sharing your very
pastel shades inspired day – and thank you so very much for the kind words about Love My Dress.  You can see more pastel colour inspired weddings here, you might also want to check out more brides wearing Candy Anthony or more Scottish weddings.

A million thanks to the wonderful Mirrorbox Photography for yet again choosing Love My Dress to share their beautiful photography.
