A Biba Wedding Dress for a Country Village Hall Celebration

Hello lovely ones – there's time for a final feature today and this celebration is all the way from bonny Scotland.  Amy and Calum tied the knot on 20 July, 2013 with a ceremony at Mitchell Library, Glasgow in Glasgow, followed by a reception at Three Sisters Bake.

“We just wanted a wedding where we felt people could relax and enjoy the day.  We wanted it to be a proper party with great food, drink and music.  Our reception definitely had a country village hall feeling.  The aim was that people would dance, laugh and be merry.”

“Calum and I met at the very end of our degrees at Glasgow University.  We were out celebrating when I recognised him from one of our classes.  It was a bit of a blurry night but I’m told I made the first move!  We started seeing each other and a year later I went travelling for a few months with my friend and bridesmaid, Susan.  Calum met us in Tokyo where we had the most exciting and fantastic time and decided we would move in together when we got home.

Our engagement was more of a slow burner than a big moment.  We had decided very early into our relationship that we would get married one day, we just waited for the right time.  One Saturday morning, sitting in our pyjamas, a year before our wedding, Calum got down on one knee and proposed.  It was lovely and suited us perfectly."

“Our ceremony was in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow, and our wedding reception was at Three Sisters Bake, Kilmacolm.  We choose the Mitchell Library because we wanted to get married somewhere in our city close to our home.  The Mitchell is one of the most beautiful buildings in Glasgow and we travel past it almost every day.  The room we got married in is surrounded by antique books and furniture and it was incredibly light and sunny.  We both felt we were surrounded by amazing history and architecture that is central to Glasgow and we feel very privileged to have been able to hold our ceremony there.

We choose the Three Sisters Bake venue, because it was a blank canvas that we could make our own.  The hall is big, light and airy and we knew the food would be fantastic.  The girls who own the Three Sisters are lovely and we cannot commend them enough for their hard work and talents.”

“I found a fantastic bridal accessory shop in Glasgow’s West End called Melle Cloche.  I bought my shoes, purse, headpiece and earrings from there.  They stock the most beautiful, detailed, vintage accessories.  My shoes were by Rachel Simpson -  I loved the Art Deco fan design at the front.  My headpiece, also from Melle Cloche was the Olivia Comb.

I decided not to go for a veil as I didn’t think it worked with my dress or the feel of the wedding.”

“My dress was Biba from House of Fraser.  I tried it on with friends after we were engaged as a carry on and didn’t try on another!  The dress didn’t strike me immediately but when I put it on I loved it, and I could see it was a good choice from the look on my friends’ faces!  It felt very glamorous and understated.  I could imagine walking down a red carpet in it.

It flowed beautifully and felt very light.  Although I am not usually into sparkles, I loved the beaded detailing that made it a little bit magical.”

“I asked my bridesmaids to choose their own dresses and shoes so they felt comfortable and like themselves.  I asked them to choose something in a blush colour palette from the High Street.  I was trying to make it easier for them but I think they might have got a little stressed in case I didn’t like their choices.  I just wanted them to pick a dress they would otherwise wear anyway, and one they didn’t mind dancing in.  I loved their choices and I thought they looked beautiful in them.  My sister Mhairi’s dress is from Mango, Calum’s sister Louise’s is from Topshop, Lyndsey’s is from Miss Selfridge and Susan’s is from Etsy.

The bridesmaids had fresh flowers in their hair by the lovely Sophie at I Heart Flowers."

"Our bouquets and buttonholes were created by Sophie at I Heart Flowers.  I wanted the flowers to look wild, summery and pretty.  I spoke with Sophie and we decided on a palette of soft greens, peaches, blush pinks and yellow.  They were wonderful and worked really well with our dresses, and I particularly liked getting a lovely smell of mint from the foliage.  I love the boys’ buttonholes, they were fun and refreshing."

"We hired a vintage typewriter from Butler & Taylor so that our guests could write us notes throughout the night. Some are more readable than others!  I got an old suitcase of my granny’s and used it to hold cards. We also made a slideshow of old family photos from as far back as we each could get them and projected these with music before and during the ceremony."

"I made the seating plan by drawing a map of Loch Lomond on a canvass. Each island on the map was a table name and the seating for our guests. Each table also had an explainer for where the name of the island comes from and a little bit of its history. This was a very personal touch as the loch is very important to us both.  My family is from the area and both Calum and I have worked on boats on the loch over the past summers.  We even went a cruise the day after our wedding with close friends and family, including my family who run Sweeney’s Cruises Loch Lomond."

“I had a few decoration parties in the lead up to the wedding.  I had friends and family collecting jars for months before which we decorated with twine, ribbon and lace.  We also made giant pompoms to hang from the lights of the hall.  We had a really fun, lovely night before the wedding, getting the venue all ready.  The Three Sisters Bake could have done it for us, but preparing for the wedding was one of the best parts of it for us.  We loved getting our friends and family involved in creating our day and we really appreciate all their wonderful help."

“Our favourite part of the day was later on when everyone was dancing we took a wee moment to ourselves.  We grabbed a beer and took a seat outside to enjoy the lovely warm evening and catch up on everything that had happened.  After that we went back and didn’t leave the dancefloor the rest of the night.”

“Our caterers were Three Sisters Bake in Kilmacolm, who also provided the reception venue.  The girls from the Three Sisters were absolutely wonderful and really helped to make our day special.  They understood that we wanted a laid back fun wedding and did everything they could to accommodate us.  One of the things we really wanted was for people to have amazing food.  We had been to the Three Sisters Bake many times for food and it had always been delicious, hearty and fresh.  We had a buffet, or rather a wedding feast, that included beef wellington, chorizo stew, salad and lots more.  We had many of our guests complimenting the food, saying it is the best wedding food they have had.  I know that it has earned the Three Sisters a few more loyal customers!

Our cake was made by Calum’s very talented sister in law.  I think she had a bit of a challenge as surprisingly, the three weeks surrounding the wedding were the hottest we have had in Glasgow for years!”

“My bridesmaid Susan is friends with Emmett who is one of the two photographers from Wilson McSheffrey.  We looked at their website and loved their understated style and the use of light in their photographs that makes everything look striking.  We met Andrew for an engagement shoot and we got on great, had fun and he made us very at ease.  This was a big help because posing for photos is not a strength of mine or Calum’s.

Both Andrew and Emmett were brilliant on the day, running about mad on what we’re told was the hottest day of the summer. Kate who works for the company is also great and we couldn’t recommend them highly enough.”

“I did my own hair and makeup.   I really enjoy doing my makeup and I knew it would relax my nerves.  I was going to go to the hairdressers but at the last minute decided I would rather stay at home with everyone getting ready together.  I bought my makeup from Bobbi Brown after a tutorial in House of Fraser.  I was really pleased with the results and it lasted all day.“

“For Calum’s day outfit he wore a McKay tartan Kilt from Mackay and Stewart, Renfrew and a Glen Orchy tweed jacket and waistcoat from MacGregor and MacDuff. Shirt and tie from Topman.  Calum then changed for the reception into a tweed suit from Asos.

Calum wore his pocket watch, that I gave him as a birthday present a few years ago, and a Vintage belt and shoes from the Glasgow Vintage Co.

Calum’s best man and groomsmen wore their own family tartans or their choice of tartan, again from Mackay and Stewart.  Like the bridesmaids, we didn’t want everyone to look the same and wanted them to be comfortable."

“My dad walked me down the aisle to the sound of ‘Beth/Rest’, by Bon Iver. During our ceremony, Calum’s mum read ‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go’ from Dr. Seuss, and my mum finished the ceremony with an Irish blessing.  My mum’s reading was a particularly teary moment.  She went blind relatively recently so had to memorise the blessing.  Both mums’ readings were very touching.  We didn’t want anything romantic or in any way soppy, so they had just the right tone.”

"With the help of friends and Calum’s mum, we did our own flowers in both venues.  Calum’s mum picked a lovely selection of flowers from her garden to fill our homemade jars and I went to a wholesalers for the bulk of the flowers."

"We hired a very casual band which was made up of musicians from our local pub to play Scottish folk music as guests arrived at the evening venue. The party music was from our own Spotify playlist which was just a collection of all our favourite songs to dance to from Motown to 90 ballads! A lovely moment was when my sister sang a Robert Burns song and one of her own at the end of the night.
