Blessings In Disguise For a Charming and Colourful Village Hall Wedding

Lovely readers, today’s homecrafted wedding was affected by a venue setback that would make the calmest of brides wobble a little. Yet bride, Sara happily says everything turned out to be even more perfect because of the things that went wrong! Not that by looking at these stunning Caro Weiss photos you would have thought anything was less than perfect.

This village hall wedding is full of character, locally sourced Scottish suppliers and homemade, personal touches.

“When it came to planning the wedding we didn’t particularly have a coherent plan. We just picked a mix of things and looks that we liked. Lots of browsing on Pinterest helped and much shameless copying went on! Also, if you’re in or around Glasgow I’d recommend the Glasgow Wedding Collective – their wedding fairs were good for a bit of inspiration.”

“Iain and I met at a club in 1999, got engaged on holiday in New York 2005 and then had a nine-year period where we didn’t do anything about it and had a baby instead! Last year I thought it might be fun, so asked Iain if he fancied going for it in the middle of an email reminding him to get milk – romantic!”

“Unfortunately our original venue cancelled on us with six months to go which was pretty alarming. Killearn Village Hall was one of the places they suggested we have a look at and we went along in bad spirits because all our plans had been ruined. We immediately loved the village, the building, the hall and the beautiful surroundings. Turns out the cancellation was a blessing in disguise as this was a 1000 times better than the original venue.”

“One of my bridesmaids came across an online shop called Dig for Victory based in Brighton. I didn’t care much about bridesmaid dresses, I just wanted them to wear something they’d be happy in. This shop was perfect because each bridesmaid could pick the fabric, colour and bodice she liked yet they were still fairly similar in style and went well with my dress. When they tried the dresses on they looked perfect and, more importantly, they were all happy.”

“Wearing a wedding dress had never been a particular ambition of mine so when I tried on some ‘proper’ wedding dresses to see if I liked them, I just felt very silly! I wasn’t looking for some fantasy dream dress, just one that I liked a lot. When I saw this one at Dragonfly Dress Designs, I liked the colour and thought the lace was beautiful.

I also liked the ¾ length sleeves and the vintage shape. I loved having an old dress and wondering who had worn it and where it had been before. It originally had a high round neck but Lisa at Dragonfly altered it to have a v-shaped back and a slash neck.”

“My shoes were from Clarks! Not very exciting perhaps, but I don’t really like wearing heels and knew that I’d be gutted to have sore feet all day. I loved the shape of these and thought they went really well with the dress – also, I was able to dance all night in them!”

“I hadn’t been that bothered about flowers but when I phoned Allie at Lavender Blue she was so enthusiastic and passionate she managed to get me really excited too! I wanted something quite un-styled and un-fancy and I loved the beautiful results. The flower girls had little daisy flower wands which were very sweet too.”

“I had planned to make the flowergirl dresses myself but I came across these on Etsy and changed my mind – I loved them for being wedding-y but so lovely and simple. They looked brilliant paired with little white Converse so the girls could run around all day.”

“When it came to the décor I was very hands-on! I bought fabric from IKEA and sewed table runners to add some colour to the tables. I searched charity shops for decanters and vases for the flowers. We hung honeycomb balls from Paperchase around the room and with the help of Luci at Events Décor we hung lots and lots of fairy lights!”

“Our friend Jen owns the CAKE shop in Aberdeen and she made a beautiful and super tasty cake with all our favourite sponges – Victoria, coconut, carrot and coffee and walnut.”

“The hessian bunting was an idea nicked from Pinterest – it was just hessian backed with felt with the letters and numbers stencilled on in acrylic paint.”

“We loved so much about our day – the ceremony, seeing all our friends and family looking fancy, the brilliant speeches – but probably my favourite bit was the packed and unruly dance floor all night and having lots and lots of fun. We WERE going to have What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love and Understanding by Elvis Costello as our first dance but Iain’s best man was a bit drunk and pressed track two instead which was Into the Groove by Madonna – we could have stopped it but it was very funny so Into the Groove it was!”

Words of wisdom…

Just don’t worry about it.  It does take loads of planning, but it’s fun if you do it in bits.  I think if you make sure you have the right photographer, hair and make up, a dress you like and a good venue as early as possible then that’s a good start to build on. There’s a lot of nonsense about weddings – it’s not the best day of your life and it won’t be perfect. What it IS, is a really lovely day that you’ll always remember!”

I just love Sara and Iain’s down to earth wedding and their relaxed approach to the planning, the hiccups and the feel of the whole day.
