Charlie Brear Glamour For a City-Chic Style Wedding in Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital never fails to make a stunning backdrop for a wedding. The ancient city, with it’s grey stone and wide skies, compliment this bride’s modern and understated look perfectly. Set within the grand rooms of The Balmoral Hotel, Chiara and Rob married on 6th April 2014 and celebrated their wedding in style.

Chiara is an editor and blogger, whilst Rob works as a software engineer.

“Rob and I met whilst we were students working at Gap in Edinburgh. We were together for 7 years before Rob got down on one knee and proposed at one of our favourite spots in the city; The Botanic Gardens. We were engaged for two years before tying the knot.

We are real city people who adore Edinburgh and we wanted a venue that was iconic to our beautiful city, somewhere that would stand the test of time so that we could visit it time and time again. We picked a city centre venue that had the best of Edinburgh as it’s backdrop.”

Chiara’s dress is by designer Charlie Brear and she purchased it at Lamesley Bridal. Accessorised with stunning Jimmy Choos and a statement necklace from Rachel Scott Couture, Chiara looked incredibly chic yet relaxed and effortless. “I wanted something simple, elegant and timeless. Big dresses made me feel like I was playing dress up. I wanted something I felt comfortable in and this dress encompassed that feeling.”

I think that Chiara’s decision to keep it simple and wear her hair down is inspired. Styled by Lynn Ford at Inspire, Chiara’s glossy tresses were adorned for the ceremony with a beautiful cathedral length veil and for the reception she left her hair loose and perfect.

I also love the choice of bridesmaids dresses. All the ladies looked gorgeous in their knee length taupe frocks from French Connection. This colour palette of soft white and faun is echoed beautifully in the choice of flowers.

Chiara and Rob chose Lauren McGlynn to photograph their wedding. It’s clear that Lauren really knows how to capture the magic of the Edinburgh skyline and use it as a wonderful backdrop for the happy couple.

“We picked Lauren as we wanted a candid selection with an informal style. She really exceeded our expectations on this front. Our photos are stunning and these comments have been mirrored by our family and friends.”

“We used Garlands for our bouquets. I wanted the colour palette to be very neutral hence all the flowers are white. I chose for myself and the bridesmaids to carry the same flowers as I didn’t want there to be any real difference between us. And I just really love gypsophila, I have them in the house a lot.”

Chiara walked down the aisle with her sister to Birdy ‘1901’ and exchanged vows with rings from Annie Smith.

“We wanted to go to a local jeweller and this boutique had some really stunning pieces.

We had a humanist ceremony, which was perfect for us as it was spiritual but non-religious. We also had a reading from a book we have at home, ‘Letters of Note’. It was a letter written by John Steinbeck to his son about love. It is the most beautiful reading and one of Rob’s closest friends read it out. At first, we weren’t sure if the reading would work since it was a letter, but the words really resonated with us so we decided to go with it anyway. Afterwards, we had so many compliments on the reading.”

“We wanted to bring as much of our home into our wedding as possible. We featured things from our house so that when the wedding was over we could take them home, see them every day and know they were part of the celebration. Home is very important to us.

We had a lot of candles and tealights on the tables, fireplaces and wherever else they could be put out. We always have candles in our home and so we wanted them to be a feature at our wedding. We also used vintage photo frames for the table name settings (chosen from some of our favourite music albums), we had an Olivetti vintage typewriter rather than a guest book and next to it we had a bowl from Anthropologie filled with Percy Pigs as they are my favourite sweet. We wanted people to enjoy a Percy Pig whilst they left us a message. We have framed some of the messages our guests left us and they are now on a wall at home.”

Catering was provided by the venue and the amazing looking cakes were from Cuckoos Bakery“This fantastic Edinburgh bakery is just around the corner from us and we frequently go there for cake and tea. We made some of the biggest decisions about our wedding over cake there, have got to know the owners really well and above all of that, we think Cuckoo’s does the best cake in Edinburgh. We wouldn’t have had anyone else do our cakes for us.”

“Sitting at the table during dinner and talking to my husband about how happy we were, how blessed we felt to have all of these amazing people turn out for our wedding was my favourite part of the day. It was perfect, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom.

“Take the time to enjoy the day itself. You get pulled in one hundred different directions, so try and take at least a moment to just enjoy it. Secondly, there’s no point in worrying about things. I am a big believer in it all coming together – worrying achieves nothing and even if it isn’t quite what you imagined it would be on the day, I can still guarantee it will be the best day of your life.”

What a truly elegant wedding, set in beautiful city. Thank you to Chiara and Rob for sharing this lovely day and to Lauren McGlynn for the atmospheric and candid photography.

When your home city is your favourite place to be, why would you want to celebrate your wedding anywhere else?
