What do you get when a stylish hairdresser marries an artistic sign writer? A beautiful wedding full of individual character and personality that’s what!! Looking at these Katy Mutch images made me think that this fab couple ripped up the traditional wedding rule book and did exactly what they wanted for their big day. As there is hardly a photo where they aren’t wearing super happy smiles it appears that it most definitely worked for them!
Vicki and Lee were married in spring this year on 24th May 2014, not far from their Sheffield home, at the Manorial Barn, Rotherham.
“We didn’t necessarily follow a certain theme or colour scheme for our wedding, as we wanted it to be as relaxed as possible. I guess we just went with everything we liked and it all came together in the end.
Katy Mutch was an absolute dream photographer. She came highly recommended and after seeing her previous work, how could we not book her?! We clicked straight away and felt like we’d known her for years. She captured our wedding better than we could ever have imagined and we have photographs to cherish forever.”

“My Auntie Jeanette and her friend Sue arranged all the flowers except the bouquets, as Jeanette unfortunately broke her arm just a few weeks before the wedding. The bouquets were made by the very talented girls at Swallows & Damsons. We opted for a very natural theme with a mixture of pastel coloured peonies, roses and gypsophila.”
Vicki bought the dress from Debenhams along with her satin trimmed Pearce II Fionda veil. Her beautiful shoes were from the unique Irregular Choice.
“I knew I wanted something non-traditional to wear and this Ben de Lisi dress just fitted the bill. I love the style and the detail of the satin lace. It was comfortable too, which was important, as I wanted to dance all night and not have my dress hinder me in any way.”
“I was really struggling to find exactly what I wanted to wear in my hair, when I remembered my friend’s mum had been on some hat & fascinator making courses so asked if she would be able to make me something. I bought the brooch from an antiques fair, so she used this as a template for the leaves. I was absolutely thrilled with the outcome; it was perfect!”
“We chose the Manorial Barn since we wanted somewhere a bit out of the ordinary, plus the barn was only 10 minutes away from home. We were speechless when we first went to view the venue, we just loved that it had a soul and plenty of history to it; part of the barn dates back to the early 13th century! It was also big enough to hold our vast amount of family and friends and the perfect place to have a Ceilidh band!”
“Out of everything, I absolutely adored the flowers! There were just so many of them and they were the most beautiful colours! I loved that the owners of the barn had taken control of decorating it all, so it took the stress away from me and I could focus on enjoying the days running up to the wedding. It also meant it was a big surprise when I walked in! It was the most amazing feeling having all our family and friends in one place and knowing they were all there for us, it was very humbling.”
“Being a hairdresser myself I was never going to be short of people I knew who could style my hair for the day, but I chose one of my dearest friends Jess as she is amazing at her job. I couldn’t have wished for anyone better. We work together in her salon in Beighton, Sheffield where myself, my mum and bridesmaids went on the day to have our hair done.”
“We met on Christmas Eve 2005 in a nightclub in Sheffield. I was wearing a Santa hat and Lee stole the pom-pom from it, he kept it safe and brought it with him to the wedding in his pocket and handed it to me at the ceremony. We became engaged in February 2013 when Lee tied my engagement ring with a piece of ribbon to a rose tree in our garden and led me outside with his hands over my eyes.”
“Lee decided not to opt for a suit as he doesn’t feel comfortable in one, instead he wore smart jeans, a white shirt and burgundy waistcoat with leather desert boots. We had the buttonholes made to order by a lovely lady called Sarah White who has her own shop on Etsy.”
Lee designed and printed all of the stationery for the wedding along with the fabulous heart logo that appeared throughout the day, as well as on the favour half-pint glasses of beer that were used for the toast.
Vicki was walked down the aisle by her dad, Gary, to the beautiful ‘Can I Stay?’ by Ray Lamontagne. As they are big fans of the singer they also made time to see him while on honeymoon in the US.
“I was so happy with the girls’ dresses from Marks & Spencer. I opted for two different colours in the same style, and the colours suited each bridesmaid perfectly. Danielle was in blush pink and April in light aqua. While Millen’s dress wasn’t a traditional flower girl’s dress it was perfect for her and our wedding.”
“My wonderful friend, Kate made our fabulous tower of cupcakes and top tier. We had three flavours; raspberry & almond, carrot & lime and peanut butter and chocolate. The top tier was a fruit cake that had been laced with Amaretto – yum!
We also had a cheese wedding cake for the evening. After all why have one cake, when you can have two!”
“My friends made us a hot air balloon piñata that read ‘I love NY’ as this is where we were going on our honeymoon. They also made us sticks out of wooden spoons; one was a bride, the other a groom. Inside the balloon were dollars and personal notes from each friend. It was a lovely thought and also very funny trying to break into as my friend had made it super strong!”
Words of wedded wisdom
“Remember, this is your day. Don’t get too wrapped up in what other people think you should have/do. Don’t feel like you have to follow any rules when it comes to your wedding; who decided that you should have a first dance anyway? Do it the way you want to! And don’t lose sight of why you are doing it all. Have a fabulous wedding but also remember that the marriage is the most important part. If I could rewind and do it all again, I would do it all exactly the same!
I want to pay special thanks to my wonderful Mum, she was just amazing throughout the planning process and we could not have done any of it without her. She just thought of everything! We had a really close relationship before I got engaged and the wedding has just brought us even closer together. I love her with all my heart.”
Ah, Vicki and Lee, I believe you truly created the relaxed day you hoped for, with a little help from friends and family, some familiar high street names and a touch of internet shopping. Thank you so much for allowing us to have a nose at your day and to Katy Mutch for capturing the happy faces and sharing the photos with us all.
Are any of you lovelies planning your own barn dance?
Much ‘dosey doe’ love!
