What a beautiful Sunday morning, I really hope it finds you with an opportunity to lie in, rest a little and catch up on those depleted energy levels after a long week at work. It’s been such a busy week for me – my husband turned 40 on Thursday and we also celebrated achieving half a million social media followers!  I can’t thank you guys enough for visiting the blog, for liking our posts and for engaging with us on social media.

I’ve been wanting to share these photographs and the beautiful film below for a while now, but events late last involving the loss of my dear Grandpa meant I had to rearrange a few posts at the very last minute.  It also goes without saying that I have huge admiration for a great many designers in bridal fashion, but one I have a particular soft-spot for is David Fielden.  Whilst based in London, David is celebrated all over the world for his innovative and edgy wedding dress designs.  These aren’t gowns for the bride who wants to ‘stay safe’ – they’re dresses for women unafraid to make an elegant and feminine fashion statement but who love to experiment with a unique sense of style.

In 2013, I had the absolute pleasure of being able to join David in Milan for the launch of his 2014 collection. The experience was one of the highlights of my year at work.  It was an exceptionally beautiful and expertly orchestrated showcase.  The way that David utilised a sense of theatre and performance was mesmerising, but then, as a former dancer, choreographer and theatre designer himself, this is something that comes most naturally to him, and something that is no more evident than in the exquisite film below.  This film was shot in Milan last year to launch David’s new collection for 2015, and I urge you to watch it. David is a master at showcasing movement in fabric and I adore how he did this by employing real ballet dancers to grace his bridal catwalk…

The first thing that captured my attention in the film above was beguiling opening notes of Kate Bush’s ‘Prelude/Prologue’, a track taken from her stunning ‘Aerial’ album. This song is a personal fave of mine anyway (we played this particular track during our wedding reception as it holds significant meaning to both my husband and I – I talk about it here actually).

The film opens with two little girls (sisters, best friends?) adventuring outside to a scene inspired by the ballet, the ‘Rite of Spring‘, and as the show unfolds, it’s audience is treated to a captivating performance by professional ballet dancers, ending in the little girls being reunited as adults – wearing beautiful wedding dresses by David of course.

This collection showcased in this film and the dresses  you see on this page here today, all of which are available now in David’s London flagship store or through one of his worldwide stockists, was inspired by the revolutionary dance company of the 1920’s Ballet Russes, which brought together some of the most creative people of the 20th century under the directorship of Serge Diaghilev.

It’s a collection that celebrates femininity in all it’s glorious form. I couldn’t adore it more.   Gold antique beaded dresses set against ivory tulle give the exotic opulence of Scheherazade.  Laser cut dresses in floral patterns in stone and cappuccino satin have an easy 1920’s feel.  Faded rose print duchess satin and pastel coloured tulle dresses with petal details conjure up the romance of the ballet ‘Le Spectre de la rose’ and brings the show to it’s dramatic end, seen above.

I have huge admiration for designers like David – for those who break away from the mould of safe, traditional and who explore the beauty of bridal wear in all it’s feminine and elegant, bold, graceful, quirky and adventurous facets.  These are the designers I am most inspired by – those who design based on an uncompromising vision and authentic, original way that creates a unique signature – an aesthetic recognisable in an instant as their own.

Pretty floral prints combined with quirky regal inspired imagery make this collection a David Fielden triumph through and through.

david fieldenI’ve been more intrigued than ever to learn more about this fascinating designer and his background so talked to David recently about how, having started out as a dancer, he now found himself such a respected bridal fashion designer.

After having worked in the world of stage design, dance and choreography winning numerous awards, some 35 years ago, David inherited an exclusive collection of vintage garments which he started to sell in his first boutique of the renowned King’s Road.  With a background in art, beauty and creativity, and finding himself physically located in the centre of a world of luxury fashion, David found himself drawn to bridal design so set out to create his first collection.   And the rest is history.

David chooses to launch his new collections each year in Milan, and his show is one of this unmissable events you’d give you left arm for a seat on the front row for – the highlight event of the fashion calendar year for many prestigious bridal boutiques and international bridal fashion press.  As you’ll see from the film above, his shows are always set amidst an evocative scene and atmosphere, creating the most hypnotisingly beautiful backdrop for showcasing his designs.
