Eliza Jane Howell and a Juliet Cap Veil for a Glamorous Gatsby Inspired City Wedding

Happy Friday readers! I did a little maths last weekend and realised that my husband and I have had the honour of attending 22 weddings in the six years we’ve been together! And despite sharing similarities, each one has been wonderfully unique, just like the weddings we share every day on this beautiful wedding blog.

Inspired by The Great Gatsby, today’s city wedding oozes 1920s and 30s glamour. Ross, an electrician, married Rebecca, a sales support analyst, on the 4th of July 2015 at Christ the King Catholic Church, followed by a reception at St Mary’s Guildhall, in the heart of Coventry.

Our wedding theme was ‘vintage glamour’, inspired by our love of the 1920s and 30s and The Great Gatsby. From the dresses, head pieces, and glamourous make up right through to the huge bouquets and the dapper three piece suits and pocket watches, everything was inspired by this era.”

Here at Love My Dress HQ, we are very proud that so many brides and grooms are inspired by our blog and we are happy to report that Rebecca and Ross are no exception. Thank you for your kind words Rebecca!

I absolutely adore Love My Dress! It’s so lovely to be able to read about other couple’s special days, I love seeing their vision and hard work come to life; It’s like reading a story every time! The blog is fantastic and was great inspiration for our own big day and even though our wedding is now over I’ll still be a regular visitor!

Rebecca opted for a stunning, vintage inspired embellished gown by Eliza Jane Howell, purchased from Georgina Scott Bridal, an award winning boutique in Stourbridge.

I’d actually seen my dress in a Gatsby Inspired feature in a bridal magazine quite a while before getting engaged but it really stuck in my mind. I ordered ‘Lucille’ and instantly fell in love when I tried it on – I knew it was ‘the one’. I absolutely loved the detail and the buttermilk – coloured beading, it was just the whole package and for me and perfectly fit our Gatsby inspired theme.”

We used Jo Hastings Photography. Joanne was our friend’s photographer for their wedding day the year before we got engaged and we were completely blown away by her portfolio…words can’t even describe how wonderful she is, how special she makes you feel on the day and how amazing her photographs are. Her work leaves you speechless. She literally captured our day just like a story book; it was so lovely to relive the day again when we received the images.”

Our bride accessorised with a pair of fresh water pearl studs and a matching bracelet from Francis & Gaye Jewellers.

I wore Flowerbomb by Victor & Rolf. I love it, but the main reason for wearing this on the wedding day was because it’s Ross’ favourite scent on me too!

Our bride’s 1930s inspired Cathedral length veil was created by designer Rae Birch of Agnes Hart. I’ve long been a fan of Rae’s vintage inspired veils and headpieces, and Rebecca’s Juliet Cap Veil is yet another example of her beautiful craftsmanship. You can read more about Agnes Hart here.

My ivory Juliet Cap veil was cathedral length with a blusher. On either side there were rose clips with pearl centres and the detailed beading across the headband perfectly complemented my gown.”

Continuing the 1920s/30s theme, Rebecca wore ivory, silk, T-bar heels by Rachel Simpson with a champagne gold trim.

Rebecca married her beau in the church where her parents wed 44 years earlier! Our bride walked down the aisle accompanied by her father, to the sounds of Pachelbel’s Canon, performed by Vyne String Quartet.

My Dad walked me down the aisle and gave me away, it was one of the most unforgettable moments of my life; he looked like the happiest and proudest gentleman alive that day.

The love I felt for Ross when I walked down the aisle was incredible and l had the strongest feeling of happiness; really cheesy I know, but surely how every bride should feel at that moment? Ross had the biggest smile on his face, it was so lovely.”

Ross looked very smart in a skinny fit, dark brown three piece suit from Next and dark brown leather brogues from ASOS. Ross wore a burgundy tie and matching pocket square from Alexander McQueen, and accessorised with a pocket watch from Edmonds in Coventry, and a skull ring from The Great Frog.

When it came to his suit and the groomsmen’s’, Ross was very particular! And it paid off; they all looked so dapper on the day…especially the groom!

Ross and I met on St. Georges Day, 2010 in a night club in Coventry town centre called Scholars and were pretty much inseparable from the get go. We had our first child together, Erin, a few years later in June 2013. We were together for just under 4 years when Ross proposed at home and engaged for just shy of 16 months before the wedding day.”

Vyne String Quartet were absolutely fantastic and it felt so special having them perform during the ceremony. I always imagined walking down the aisle to violins playing and the sound was just so lovely…it definitely added to the drama and intensity in the church.”

We chose traditional readings from the Catholic Church and hired organist Derek Clarke to accompany our hymns; ‘All things bright and Beautiful’ and ‘Give Me Joy in My Heart’ – both favourites from our school days!

“My daughter, Erin, and niece, Ivy, wore made to order ivory dresses by Nicki Macfarlane purchased through Georgina Scott Bridal. The girls wore the same dresses as the Duchess of Cambridge’s’ flowergirls. It was wonderful having our daughter as part of our wedding day and we wanted her to feel just as special as I did.

Our nephew, Ethan, and my bridesmaid’s son, Jacob, wore bespoke shorts made by Julie Dutton, a designer and dress maker based in Kenilworth. We asked Julie to use the same fabric as the groomsmen’s trousers, and the boys wore these with dark brown braces, white shirts from Next and burgundy bow ties teamed with Clarks Originals dark brown wax Desert Boots.”

Rebecca’s bridesmaids were the picture of 1930s elegance in ivory silk maxi dresses from Ghost and champagne gold, T-bar heels from Dune. I love the art deco inspired forehead chains Rebecca’s maids wore, also from Agnes Hart.

The Bridesmaid dresses were by Ghost and made to order in ivory silk. They were floor length with a drape back and similar shape to my own gown. They were very vintage glam.”

The couple’s bouquets, buttonholes and church flowers were arranged by Nuleaf Florists in Coventry. Meanwhile, the floral decorations at St Mary’s were put together by Nikki at Every Occasion Floral design and Venue Dressing, who also designed and arranged the décor at the reception venue.

The flowers we received from Nuleaf were nothing shy of incredible and Nikki of Every Occasion did such an outstanding job and really captured that Gatsby feel at St Mary’s.

The final look of the reception venue was everything I’d ever dreamed of and more and just the impact I wanted for our wedding day. For our centre pieces we chose silver candelabras decorated with an arrangement of hydrangeas, roses and candles. The rest of the room was dressed with the same flowers to continue the theme, as well as a variety of vintage props.”

For their party entertainment, Rebecca and Ross hired Jazz and Blues duo, Black Fish, followed by a DJ supplied by Vibe Entertainment, who also provided a pop up Photo Booth.

Black Fish Duo are absolutely fantastic and both so talented. Their input really was the finishing touch for our vintage theme.

We chose ‘Iris’ by The Goo Goo Dolls for our first dance, which we shared with our daughter Erin; it was such a special moment for us! Sharing our wedding day with Erin had to be one of the most special aspects of the day for us.”

One of our favourite parts of the day was seeing everything we’d worked on all come together. It felt like a real sense of achievement seeing everyone enjoying themselves and just having all of our family and friends together in the same place at the same time was so lovely (and something that doesn’t happen very often).

In the evening, Rebecca replaced her veil with a gorgeous antique lace hat, also from Agnes Hart.

Words of Wedded Wisdom

Savour and enjoy every second of the planning, the hen and stag weekends, the pre wedding get-togethers and working with your suppliers.

The world of weddings is a bit of a minefield, so I would recommend picking a theme. It’s really easy to get lost and lose track of the final look you’re trying to achieve and having something to aim towards helps.

Your wedding day will fly by so make sure you take a moment together on your own to take a step back and look at all the hard work you’ve both put in, it’s the most rewarding feeling and a huge sense of achievement that you’ve done this together!
