The Lovettes (Saffron) – All we are, is dust in the wind….dude.

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. On the face of it, a glorious grunge era jaunt using time travel to elicit laughs from various ‘fish out of water’ scenarios. Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves (doing what he does best, before he started trying to be a serious actor) playing the bodacious flannel shirt wearing titular dudes. But once we scratch beneath the surface of this apparent lighthearted comedy, we find a thought provoking journey into existentialism, most aptly summed up by the line “All we are, is dust in the wind….dude”.

So where am I heading with this reminiscence? Well, while finalising the plans for our wedding, I have also been contemplating the dots of fluff in my own sunbeam, the grains of sand in my hourglass, and particularly the phrase ‘to spend time’. It’s a fairly everyday saying, one I have used many times without particularly considering the resonance.

But putting so much effort and concentration into one day (or in our case, 3 days) has made me consider time as a commodity that we must ‘spend’ wisely. Time is the only credit we are born with, and ultimately the only collateral with any true worth – no point being filthy rich if you have no time left. And for most of us, we have no way of knowing when our time account is going to run out.

But for so many people they seem to end up saying “it just went so fast, I wish we’d had more time to ourselves, or to sit back and enjoy the day, I barely had time to speak to anyone…”. I’m hoping that by spreading our wedding over a long weekend, we manage to remove some of the haste and anxiety. No doubt the morning before the ceremony will be frantic, finalising DIY decorations, setting out table plans, hair, make up, controlling small children and dogs, but once that is done it would be great to feel we’re along for the ride along with our guests.

We should all remember, don’t sweat the small stuff – if something isn’t quite how you envisaged, it’s doubtful anyone else will notice. In years to come when you look back on the day it will be the people who chose to spend some of their time chips in order to live the moment with you, that you remember, rather than the colour of your confetti or the flavour of your favours.

So how have our wedding preparations moved on since the last blog?

Myself and the Groom took a trip down to Cad & The Dandy to collect his suit. Lo and behold he’d lost half a stone without realising, so out came the pin box to make some more alterations. Imagine my joy as he shrugged and said “well I haven’t been trying to lose weight”, emphasising the point by pulling on his trouser waistband, as I looked down at my poor feet, swathed in compeed blister plasters from weeks of frenzied pram pushing to try and shed some baby podge.

Never one to give up easily, the following week I took a trip of my own, to the vintage underwear specialists What Katie Did in Portobello. The fabulous Rachel could see the desperation in my eyes as I pushed my pram into the shop. I showed her a picture of my dress and asked for her advice on which underwear would smooth my caesarean scar, cinch in my waist and give great posture. Somehow, without requiring me to survive on green juices for 2 months, she transformed me from lumpen mother of two, hurtling at warp speed to age *coughs* 40, to Sophia Loren with an unfeasibly tiny waist. I was SOLD and left the shop with my corset on order in cream satin, vowing to buy the same in black as soon as possible and to live in them day and night for the rest of my life. I was also very tempted by the bullet bras but felt they may scare the groom to death…or at least take an eye out on the wedding night. Eat your heart out Dita.

At the time of writing this, we are truly in the final countdown. We finally stole an afternoon to go to the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter today to buy our wedding rings – we asked our wedding guests for donations towards the rings instead of presents as our budget had run dry. It’s made it feel even more special that we will always be wearing the rings that they all helped us buy. And let’s face it, diamonds are a lot more interesting than toasters.

I now have just two more days to finish off any last crafty projects (stencilling my teepee and spray painting feathers since you asked) and then we head off on our honeymoon to Santorini which we’re having before the wedding…with two children. My hope is that we arrive at the wedding tanned and relaxed. The reality may differ.

It does feel kind of surreal to come to the end of my To Do List. To see the totem pole of tubs crammed with ribbons, sparkly things and ideas reach it’s completion. The thing I have loved most about this process has been seeing just how many amazingly talented and creative people are out there, producing great quality products. From Kate Keeler running her Etsy store in Hawaii, making floral dog collars to raise money for dog charities, to my poor hairdresser and friend Matthew Curtis who has nodded patiently whilst I have waved Pinterest pictures in his face for the last 12 months.

So that’s it. Planning done. Miles walked. OCD taken to new levels. Projects fallen in and out of love with. All systems go. Any of you brides out there who are experiencing a moment of bridezilla madness, take a breath, poke a finger in the eye of mundanity, throw your head back and sing karaoke like no one’s listening and most importantly, spend your time with the people you love like there’s no tomorrow.

Love Saffron x
