Suzanne Neville, Jazz and Lawn Games for an Elegant Victorian Train Station Wedding

One of the things I love most about writing for this beautiful wedding blog is seeing all the wonderful photographs which come my way. And of all these images, my favourite thing isn’t the beautiful dresses, the wonderful transport or the gorgeous flowers. I really love discovering the astoundingly beautiful and wonderfully quirky venues our couples choose for their nuptials. These days, if you can dream it, then you can probably find it somewhere, and there is more choice than ever- hooray! Over the years we have seen beautiful weddings in the woods, in castles and country houses; boats, village halls, gardens and pubs; barns, breweries and even a lighthouse or two, not forgetting some very romantic elopements into the wilds of the highlands.

Today’s couple, who got engaged on a skiing holiday in 2014, are no exception to this fabulous venue tradition and I am absolutely in love with this unusually located wedding. Get ready to be inspired by these wonderful images from talented duo M&J Photography of a wedding so full of romantic details and beautiful colours that you will want to save every single picture. Jennifer and Charles tied the knot on the 6th of June this year at the magnificent Romsey Abbey in Hampshire.

“I met Jonny when he photographed a friend’s wedding and as soon as I saw their photos I knew he’d be the photographer I used when I got married. M&J Photography were actually the first thing we booked once we’d set the date at the Abbey! Their photos are just so natural, they capture light so beautifully and we love the informal, candid shots they captured at our wedding, it was exactly what we wanted. They’re also delightful people and were so easy to work with – all our guests commented on how unobtrusive they were and everyone who’s seen the photos have complimented them.”

Jennifer told us that Charles’ family have lived in Romsey for several generations and all been married in the Abbey, so it was important to him to carry on this tradition- and what an incredible place to say your vows, with soaring ceilings and enormous stained glass windows.

After the ceremony, however, the newlyweds and their guests moved to the quirky and very charming Horsebridge Station to continue the celebrations, a grade two listed restored Victorian Railway Station. I just adore this place!

“We wanted a quirky venue near to the Abbey and found Horsebridge Station on Google, it was the only place we visited – as soon as we saw it, we knew it was perfect.”

The floral stationery was the design work of the talented bride herself. I love how it is both romantic and unusual, therefore suiting both ceremony and reception venue beautifully.

“I used to work as a graphic designer, so thought I’d dust off my Mac and give it a go!”

The bridesmaids and mother of the bride’s makeup was expertly applied by Caroline Carlin, and bridal make up and everyone’s hair was the handiwork of Rikki from Dolly Goes Dancing.

Jennifer and Charles chose Garden Inn, Stockbridge, to create their wedding flowers, and what an fabulous job they did…

“I knew from the first email that Jane from Garden Inn sent that she was going to do an amazing job! I can’t recommend them highly enough; the flowers were my favourite part of the day. I had designed the Save the Date cards using pink and yellow roses, so this gave me the initial idea of colours.

I wanted something very simple for the tables, as I don’t like it when you go to a wedding and the table flowers are so high you can’t see the person opposite. My mum and I collected jars for about a year, then decorated them all using hessian, lace and twine, to put the flowers in. I came across a picture on Pinterest of a flower display hanging from the middle of a marquee and fell in love with the idea – Jane created a 9 metre hanging display of flowers and ribbon and it was breath-taking.”

She finished her look with a pair of vintage-style dancing shoes by Rachel Simpson, earrings and a bracelet borrowed from her Mum, and a sparkly hair accessory from Cherished Vintage.

Jennifer looked stunning in a delicate and feminine lace dress with sweetheart neckline and cap sleeves, by Suzanne Neville. The dress was aptly named ‘Splendour’, and purchased from The Dress in Teddington.

“The ladies there was so lovely, friendly and helpful – they made the whole process really enjoyable. I always wanted a lot of lace and something simple and demure – I loved how delicate the lace is and the almost ‘old school glamour’ silhouette of it.”

Jennifer paired her dress with the most dreamy of veils, from The Couture Veil Co by Sassi Holford, which works with the romanticism of the lace so beautifully. Its very simplicity is what makes it so stunning.

Charles looked very dapper indeed in his morning suit. To make his outfit extra special, he combined his suit with a custom made waistcoat from Favourbrook and a tie and pocket square in Liberty print.

“We bought material from Liberty London and sent it to a tailor to make into ties. I also bought some cufflinks from Etsy which I put the same material in to match.”

Jennifer walked down the aisle with her Dad to ‘The Wedding Procession’ from The Sound of Music (played on the organ) and she and Charles walked back up the aisle at the end of the ceremony to the choir singing ‘The Wedding Chorale’ from Les Mis. Can you tell that she loves her musicals?

As suggested by the vicar, the couple learnt the traditional vows off by heart, to make saying them even more special, which is such a lovely idea. As readings, they had an extract from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and Corinthians 13.

“I love everything vintage and Charles bought me a beautiful antique engagement ring, so we started with that as inspiration and when we found Horsebridge Station it fit perfectly with that theme so we went with it.”

“My favourite part of the day was the service in the Abbey – I expected to find it really nerve racking but I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

“I had a very loose, waterfall style bouquet – my Grandma had a similar style at her wedding so I wanted to do the same, I also got a small locket with a photo of her on which was attached to my bouquet in memory of her. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were all white, as their dresses were all different colours.”

After the ceremony, the happy couple were transported to the reception venue in a gorgeous old Bentley, while the wedding party and family followed in the most fabulous vintage Bedford Bus.

“We didn’t want to have a traditional top table, so I hung ribbon off the backs of the chairs on the table we sat at with our wedding party – an idea taken from Pinterest.

I also decorated an old painted stepladder (from Elsie Belle’s) with photos of family that had passed away and bought postcards of old Southern Railway posters to tie in with the station theme and pegged them in the vines on the platforms. Finally, I made hanging tea lights using jam jars and twine and hung them from the trees.”

The lovely bridesmaids wore dresses from Ghost, in different soft shades, with gypsophila in their hair and a Pandora charm bracelet– a gift from Jennifer that morning.

“I wanted a theme but not for the dresses to match totally, so they all had the same style but in different colours. They looked beautiful!”

“We had a 3 piece jazz band called ‘Silk Street Jazz‘, that played during the drinks reception- they were fantastic and really made the atmosphere.”

The delicious looking food was the work of the Little Catering Company, and the couple did jars of sweeties with branded bags to take them home in as favours. They also gave out glow sticks which were a hit on the dance floor! Jazz, drinks and canapés on the platform of a disused Victorian station in the afternoon sun? Perfect!

Jennifer and Charles chose The Daisy Cake Company, based near the Abbey in Romsey to create their three tiered beauty of a cake.

“We went for a naked sponge cake with different flavoured jams in each tier, decorated with simple flowers and cake topper. It was delicious!”

“Our evening band was called The Somebodys. A friend used them at their wedding and we thought they were great.”
