Happy Saturday to all you wonderful readers – I hope you have something relaxing planned for this weekend. I have a little bright and cheery treat which is sure to get you in the mood, as we turn back the clocks to earlier this year for the Spring nuptials between Cal and Jimmy on 23rd May.

Cal, who is a Doctor, and Jimmy, social media guru for Adidas, chose to fill their day with bright colours and a relaxed vibe for their outdoor party at Cal’s family home, set amongst a vibrant meadow of yellow.

“We met at Sheffield University. We got engaged nine years later on Boxing Day, after Jimmy dragged me out of bed for an early morning walk to my favourite spot near my parent’s house. We were married a year and a half later; we are not fast movers!”

“I love bright and colourful things, so we made sure to include lots of this in the decor. We wanted the day to be as relaxed, un-stuffy and as fun as possible. We were married in my local church and then the party was held at my parent’s house.”

The three striking bridesmaid’s dresses in navy blue were from John Lewis and the maids added their own shoes, plus earrings gifted by the bride. They also wore earrings from Dinny Hall – a gift from the bride on the day.

Cal decided to have her dress made and was able to have input into the design and material. Bespoke dresses are such a good idea if you’re keen to keep costs down and allows the creation of a unique one-off dress. And I love the addition of her veil that has been in the family and passed down from generation to generation – what a special tradition.

“After struggling to find a dress that I could afford I had my dress made by an amazing lady that my aunt recommended. She helped me choose the material and then created a masterpiece that we designed together.  I had seen something similar in a shop, but it was more than I wanted to spend. I love lace and wanted it to be floaty on the bottom without any ‘bling’.”

The pretty bride added a pair of Hobbs heels, gold drop earrings borrowed from her mum and a sweet flower crown made by her cousin. Hair and make-up was by Cal’s sisters’ best friend Hanalei.

The beautiful bride was driven to the church in a friend’s Landrover…

“My veil is one that has been worn by all the females on my mum’s side and goes very far back to great, great, great grandmothers.”

Now I’m sensing a theme here lovely readers, as this beautiful wedding had so much DIY input from family and friends; from the homely venue, to the bespoke handmade dress and flower crown. This help and creativity continued for the flower arrangements and the divine cake table. And all of the stationery was handcrafted too.

“My cousin and aunt helped out as our florists. We bought flowers from Covent Garden for the church and bouquets. The marquee was filled with wild flowers that we picked the day before – that worked really well, apart from the fact that they bought in a major ant infestation, which we discovered the morning of the wedding! We asked our friends to make cakes and had a cake table, rather than one stand alone cake.”

Jimmy sported a suave suit from Dress to Kill and cufflinks from his dad and was supported by his two best friends from school.

“I walked the aisle to ‘Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major’ by Bach, played on the cello by a school friend.

We had three readings. My brother read an excerpt from ‘The Prophet’ by Khalil Gabran. Jimmy’s sister read ‘Captain Correlli’s Mandolin’ by Lois de Bernieres and my two best friends from university read Corinthians 13:1 -8.”

“Our rings were from Cred Jewellery – the same place where my engagement ring came from and chosen because they use fair trade gold.”

I love these happy, joy-filled photographs taken by Livvy Hukins Photography.

I would definitely recommend her; she was really relaxed and easy to work with and produced beautiful, natural shots. We had minimal formal photographs, as we didn’t want to spend the day being photographed, which Livvy totally understood.”

To decorate their marquee, the couple borrowed bright bunting from Cal’s friend and added a range of colourful paper lanterns and festoon lights. The lanterns look incredible all lit up at night and are such a great lighting idea. The long trestle tables had hessian runners and lace, lots of flowers, and table names were all places with special meaning to the couple from their travels, such as the Copland Track in New Zealand.

For nighttime entertainment, DJ Guy Stevens played funky tunes to get everyone up and on the dance floor. And their first dance song held a special place in their hearts.

“We chose ‘Feel So Close’ by Calvin Harris for our first dance track, as it reminded us of driving around New Zealand in our van.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“Do not stress about the tiny details (both before and on the day) – no one else notices and you will have a lot more fun!”
