A Laure de Sagazan Gown for a Homespun and Festival Inspired Yurt Wedding

Good evening I hope that you have all had a great weekend. I’m moving house this week so I have been surrounded by boxes, luckily out of the stormy weather which has graced us recently. I love that we can transport you back to a balmy summer’s day with the August 8th wedding of Adam and Naomi. They tied the knot in a beautiful old church, followed by a reception in a Yurt in a gorgeous valley in West Sussex. Almost everything used was either handmade or sourced second hand. There is also a subtle fern theme stemming from their love of New Zealand’s ecology, evident in the bouquets and table décor. The aim of the game here is fun for all and it shines through the images by the fantastic ELS Photography.

“We love the outdoors, both creative people who like the nostalgia of the good old days. We had our wedding in a simple but beautiful 13th century church. It has survived the intervening centuries with very little restoration, it doesn’t even have electricity and the church is lit entirely by candles. We set up our reception in a field nearby so that we could have the whole wedding in a picturesque valley of the South Downs. The main tent was a beautiful yurt supplied by Cheltenham Yurt Hire, a great space and beautiful structure to base our outdoorsy wedding.”

From the outset Naomi had her heart set on a gown by French designer Laure de Sagazan. It took some tracking down but she eventually found The Mews of Notting Hill in London, the only UK stockist.

“As soon as I saw a Laure de Sagazan dress I knew that her style was exactly what I was after, her understated style, use of fine crêpe silks and handmade French lace was a dream come true, but getting my hands on one wasn’t so easy. We later discovered her dresses at The Mews.

“I opted for Robe Ruiz, which had a low open back and crêpe de chine silk. The fabric was so beautiful I couldn’t stop touching it and instantly felt relaxed and comfortable in the dress, it was simplistic yet it felt superior with its fine detailing.”

The couple chose ELS Photography to shoot their wedding, her fun and vibrant style was perfect for their day. ELS Photography is also featured in our Little Book for Brides.

“Emma was one of the best finds of our wedding. She was so professional from the start, coming up with new and creative ideas. The love shoot helped us to practice posing and relaxing in front of the camera so we didn’t have wooden smiles on the big day. We had such fun playing around with our dog Baxter. On the day, Emma used every spare moment to make sure every detail of the day was captured, fortunately the sun was beaming.

We added paper streams to the copper beach tree outside the church as a simple backdrop for photos and she created some beautiful shots. If you are looking for a contemporary photographer who captures the fun and emotion of your day, then Emma is the one for you.”

“I walked down the aisle to ‘Sea of Love’ by Cat Power with my dad. We also had our first dance to the song, played live on a ukulele by our friend Chris. We slow danced as the sun went down.”

Adam selected a light blue cotton Reiss suit with fitted white shirt, Topman knitted tie with brown brogues, perfect for a warm summers day.

The couple chose rings which reflected their personalities and personal style. The bride found NYC designer Mociun and loved their simple and elegant ‘Moon and Stars’ double band ring. The groom opted for a solid silver ‘Lord of the Rings’ replica ring by Jens Hansen in New Zealand, a solid ring for his hardworking hands.

“Our favourite moment was when we walked out of the church, looked each other in the eye, stopped to wipe our tears and take the moment in. We were just so happy!”

“We wanted a wild country feel to the flowers using green and white with fern. The flowers from Wild Willow Flowers looked fab except that I felt my bouquet wasn’t quite me, fortunately my father’s garden had some beautiful sweet peas and roses so I decided to do some remodelling on the morning of the wedding, it sounds crazy but I was calmly picking from his cottage garden enjoying the morning sun in my pyjamas! As our budget was quite small, we sourced extra flowers, potted ferns and white hydrangea from a local supplier.”

Naomi opted for some Anthropologie flats, flowers in her hair and a selection of turquoise rings and accessories to complete her laid back look. She also kept her make-up simple by brushing up on her skills with YouTube videos and using her usual beauty favourites including Estée Lauder and Benefit.

“Above all we really wanted our guests to have a great time, the atmosphere of a village fete with a few quirks of our own. The yurt comfortably housed our guests and band whilst looking simplistic and bohemian. From this we built a circle of fun with traditional fair games, a vintage crepe van, ribbon tree, and ‘The Landscapers Legs’, Adam’s project, a hand built pub, complete with a hand painted sign!”

Guests were presented with ‘Naomi’s Jam Jar’ cocktail upon arrival at the reception, along with canapés inspired by the flavours of their travels. The couple decided to offer their guests a sit down picnic of simple hearty ‘tear and share’ food, served in crates by Crumble Catering in the day and hired a vintage crêpe van from Winchester Vintage Catering for evening snacks.

“We bought umbrellas and hired deck chairs for sitting in the sun, inside we recreated our perfect pub, barrels of local beers, spirits from around the world, snacks and games. The children played the piano whilst the adults played darts, to top it off there was a disco ball and oriental carpet.

In the centre was the Kadai Fire bowl, where you could snuggle up with a blanket at sunset, grab a sparkler or snack on a Twinkie chatting with friends, what more could you need?”

All stationery was designed and hand made by Naomi. The blue and white ceramic tiled table plan tied in with the crockery while the name cards tied in with the fern theme on the invitations. She also made the table names using appliqué motifs and vintage yarn reels.

“Adam made survival kits for the men using old tobacco tins, containing everything you might need out in the wild, representing Adam’s outdoorsy attitude. I made a personalised ‘Vogue’ dress pattern envelope containing a sewing kit and vintage cut out bride and groom dolls, a reflection of my vintage and creative skills.”

“The wedding cake was made by our good friend Louisa Mills. Adam and I first discovered Russian honey cake at a local café and gave it to Louisa to deconstruct. It was delicate and light, perfect for a summer’s day and the most delicious cake we had ever had!”

Festival Nights, who specialise in Mumford and Sons covers played for us in the evening.  They are fantastic guys, really fun with great vocals.

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“Save, save, save and don’t always opt for the easy option, it’s your day so put your stamp on it. Building your wedding from scratch is not for the faint hearted but was worth the efforts for such a beautiful day, this gave us a real sense of achievement.”
