Hello and I’m having another of those ‘I love my job’ moments as I’m sitting writing this feature. You see, I get such a kick, not only out of seeing images of gorgeous weddings and amazing products but also from finding out why and how people arrived in the wedding industry and why they love it as much as I do. Today, I have the huge pleasure to introduce you to photographer Joanna Brown who has described her role in a way that just makes me sigh with happiness…
Joanna Brown has been a photographer for 18 years and now shoots weddings in a combination of digital and film. Her base is right next to the glorious South Downs in West Sussex and from here, she travels to weddings all over the UK and Europe.
She admits that, having studied photography at University, she’s a “bit of a purist” when it comes to photography and, whilst she was lecturing and exhibiting her work in art galleries, she wasn’t the greatest fan of the wedding genre.
“Then the game changed. My best mate, father and sister all got married in the space of three months and I shot all their weddings on black and white film and I loved it. I thought it would be a one-off but then seven years ago, I shot another friend’s wedding on a digital format and I fell in love with the genre all over again. I decided to shoot weddings in my style and the rest, as they say is history.”
“Right at the centre of what I do is emotion; we all know it is complex, chaotic and fragile so I tread lightly as a I go and work hard to make sure my couples feel totally at ease, relaxed and that they trust me to the point that they’re not even aware I’m there and just know I’ll do ‘my thing’.”
One of the things that I admire the most about Joanna’s approach to her work is the care she takes on the wedding day. She strives to give you and guests space so that you can all feel, see and do everything that you need to do to make your wedding day yours.
“Sometimes it feels like a ‘beautiful mess’ full of honesty, imperfection, vulnerability, total joy, laughter, nerves and tears. My intention is to find an artistic composition of all of the above and strip it back to see, hear and feel who is actually in front of me.”
Joanna works quietly, listening and observing and capturing your day. There’s no clipboard, no demands, nothing but a talented wedding professional recording the most important day with the least amount of fuss and intrusion.
“I never run through the motions or have a set piece, it’s more organic and natural than that I have no desire to make your wedding day something it isn’t. In fact, it’s completely the opposite. I want to capture the occasion with a real lightness of touch, rawness and subtly. Each wedding is a one off event and I work closely with my couples as a team to provide them with an artistic documentation of their unique day which is personal to them.”
Inspired by people, a lover of stories and a woman with a wicked sense of humour who laughs at herself a lot, Joanna Brown is a photographer that I for one, would love to have working her magic in her own quiet, gentle style at my wedding.
Joanna Brown is currently offering readers a 25% reduction in prices for full-day weddings held in June & July 2016 so that you can secure Joanna for your wedding for just £1500*.
