A Black Tie Cinema Wedding

Good evening lovely people, how are you on this, our final day of June this year? It would have been my beloved Grandpa’s birthday today, he’d have been 95 years old. Sadly, we lost him at 93, so today has been a mix of bitter sweet memories. I still miss my Grandpa so very much and so today, I’ve been feeling thankful for the photographs I have of him – images that can help prompt the recall of lovely, happy memories. Some of those photographs were ones taken on my wedding day back in 2009. It was a gentle reminder to me of just how very important the role of  wedding photographs play in your life – it’s something I freely admit I simply didn’t understand the significance of when I was planning my wedding.

These gorgeous images you see here this evening are of couple Richard and Jennifer who tied the knot on Sunday 20th September last year.  Jennifer works in marketing and PR and Richard is a model maker and workshop supervisor for puppet makers Mackinnon & Saunders. The couple tied the knot at The Plaza in Stockport. These photographs were taken by our Little Book For Brides member Emilie May Photography – who is currently offering a £100 saving to all Love My Dress readers.

“Richard is a huge film fan and I love the fashion, style, art and design of the period between the 1920’s and 1940’s. We didn’t want a ‘themed’ wedding but the Plaza seemed like the perfect venue to combine all of the things we love. Having a great dance floor was also an important factor in us choosing a venue.”

“After the ceremony we had popcorn and ice-cream for guests whist a selection of short films were screened – Steamboat Willie, Laurel and Hardy, the 1902 film Le Voyage dans la Lune, and we arranged for the Plaza’s organist to play throughout a silent comedy called ‘The Wedding’. Guests could also go on a tour of the Plaza to see inside the projection room and dressing rooms etc.”

Jennifer’s bridesmaids wore gowns from Virgos Lounge via ASOS.

“Richard is a massive Lego collector so I couldn’t not have a nod to that from the lego men button holes for the page boys to the surprise Lego cake that my mum made at the last minute to go alongside our main cake.”

“Films were obviously important too – from and our invites designed by Made by Memo were cinema tickets that took details from the building itself, to the film style posters outside that a friend designed for us.”

“I have really big feet (size 9) and struggled for months to find a pair of ‘bridal’ shoes that I could even get my feet into. In the end I found a pair of L.K. Bennett shoes which I wore with a pair of shoe clips from Rainbow Club via John Lewis.”

“My Dad walked me down the aisle to the sound of Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major (played on the Compton Organ).”

Jennifer isn’t sure of the designer of her gown but found and purchased her dress from a bridal outlet in Stockport.

“It didn’t have any labels in it, the sizing was a little odd, and it was the only dress in that style in the shop so I suspect that it was either a sample dress or was made for a bride that didn’t collect it. I’d have loved to of had a sleek 30’s style wedding gown but I just didn’t feel comfy when I was trying on those styles so went for something more traditional but not out of place.”

“We spent a long time thinking about the music for whilst we were signing the register. In the end we chose Romeo and Juliet’s ‘Love Theme’ by Henri Mancini, a song I have always loved dancing to.  We also had ‘J’y suis jamais allé’, the theme tune from the movie ‘Amelie’, one of our favourite films, and ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love With You’ by Elvis Presley, who we are both huge fans of.”

“We loved our photographer Emilie May’s informal but fun style. All of the little details of the day were really important to Richard and I and from looking at past weddings we knew that our photographers would spot these too.”

The couple supplied little bags of personalised rock as wedding favours.

The Plaza is filled with colour and patterns so it didn’t need decorating at all but with flowers I used pale orchids and lilies. Richard and I both love orchids and always have lots around our home anyway and “white longi lilies suited the style and era perfectly.”

“My Mum makes cakes for friends and family as a hobby but this was her biggest project to date. She made us 2 cakes. The main cake was a five tier cake surrounded by small cakes that we were able to give as gifts to people who weren’t able to make it to the wedding. The Plaza is quite a colourful venue with golds, greens, blues, pinks etc so I wanted to have a white cake so it would stand out, but it was decorated with patterns and motifs that took inspiration from the Plaza.”

“After the wedding breakfast we showed Beauty and the Beast. The main evening reception started at 7:30 but we let everyone know that they could come from 6pm to enjoy the film – this was especially popular with our guests who were coming in the evening with children and couldn’t stay as late.”

Richard built a Paper Moon photo booth and we got lots of props and a Fugifilm Instax camera. Guests took it in turns to take pics of each other to insert into our guest book and to take one away as a memento.”

“Our first dance was to The Muppets theme tune. Richard and I met by going to dance classes and so we thought that people might be expecting us to do something really serious. We love dancing but the thought of dancing to a really romantic song in front of a couple of hundred guests really didn’t appeal so we decided to go the complete opposite and do something really silly and fun. We did also do a second dance to the Charleston but again it was really fast and fun. And it meant I got to dress up in a gold flapper dress and take full advantage of getting married in a theatre – its something that we’re not going to get to do again!

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“Decide what you both want and stick to your guns. I soon realised that it didn’t matter what ideas I had people would disagree and share their opinions – everyone has an opinion on a wedding!”

  1. I honestly feel that I’ve just been taken back in time to the wedding of some 40s Hollywood starlet. This is magical. I’ve been to see a pantomime in this theatre and at the time I really didn’t appreciate its decor. Everything has come together here to make a really magical and unique day. Jennifer looks amazing, her mum should be so incredibly proud of the cakes, Richard made the brilliant moon prop, the bride and groom got to do a silly dance on a theatre stage and someone gave them a good-old-fashioned good luck horse shoe. Brilliant! So many congratulations to you both xxx

  2. Congratulations again from everyone at The Plaza, it was an absolute pleasure to be a part of your big day and the attention to detail was amazing. Fantastic photos from Emilie May which really capture what great day it was.
