Mystere by Claire Pettibone for an Ethereal and Elegant Midsummer Nights Dream Inspired Wedding

Hello gorgeous girls, it’s me again! I wonder if you feel you get to know us writers a little as we tell you the wonderful tales of wedded bliss on our blog? Well here’s a little something about me that might help explain why I am so utterly besotted with this wedding; I am obsessed with fairy stories and old wives tales, fables and myths. The enchantingly beautiful wedding of Kimberley and Saul resonates not only with love, but with a mystical romanticism, sure to sweep you off your feet.

Kimberley, a project co-ordinator, and Saul, a project geologist, wed on 15th August 2015 at St Conan’s Kirk, followed by a lavish reception at Cottiers in Glasgow – which by co-incidence makes today their first anniversary!  The beautiful bride wore a sensationally ethereal dress by one of our beloved Little Book for Brides suppliers, the magnificent Claire Pettibone, crowned with a romantic Juliet cap veil.

And if this doesn’t make 100% stop what you’re doing and devote yourself to this gorgeous feature, this just might. These sensational fine-art images were captured by another of our Little Book For Bride’s darlingsCraig & Eva Sanders. But let’s start with this lovely little video from White Balloon Films before the lovely Kimberley tells us more.

“We were inspired by ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream‘ and tried to give the day an enchanted woodland vibe. We also wanted to reflect our love for Scotland and so incorporated antlers and wood slices for a natural, rustic, Scottish feel.”

Photography by Craig & Eva Sanders.Adventure and nature are in the very bones of Kimberley and Saul’s history, so the sweeping vistas of Scotland provided a perfectly fitting backdrop to their nature-inspired, achingly romantic nuptials. Even Saul’s sweet proposal (fully worthy of a Friday proposal feature on our blog by the way if you’re reading Mr and Mrs!) celebrated nature’s majesty in perfect unison with his love for his future bride.

“Saul and I met during a gap year expedition to the Arctic. We spent twelve weeks pulling a sledge with all our kit, sleeping in tents, mountaineering and carrying out science work with a group of young people in Svalbard. It was truly the most amazing experience and we made lifelong friends, some of whom managed to make the trip to Scotland for our wedding. Given that they are scattered all over the world (Germany, Sweden and Kenya, as well as England and Wales), it made our day that they could be there.”

“We had been together five years when Saul proposed. We went away for the weekend and stayed in the sweetest little shepherd’s hut in Loch Lomond – I didn’t suspect a thing as going away had been my idea. We decided to climb Ben Lomond and when we reached the summit, Saul got down on one knee, said some lovely words and brought out the most beautiful ring from his pocket.

We got a round of applause from other hillwalkers and when one of them came up to offer his congratulations, he also offered to email some photos he had taken of us getting engaged – we feel really lucky that we have a record of that special moment. On our return to the hut for the evening, the owners appeared with pink champagne and chocolates; Saul had arranged this beforehand so I think he was pretty relieved that I had said yes (not that there was ever any doubt!).”

“We designed the stationery ourselves and used a local printer to print it.  I then hand-painted flowers and foliage onto each and every invite and Saul finished them off with an antler stamp – it was a labour of love. Tip to future brides: if you are DIY-ing your stationary, give yourself more time than you think you need; you’ll be saving yourself a lot of stress, trust me.”

“We got our wedding rings from Laings of Glasgow. They were great to deal with and gave us fizz and whisky when we were choosing our rings – we felt very special. I couldn’t decide if I wanted a plain wedding band or one with some sparkle, so ended up going for a bit of both. Saul wanted something relatively simple but with a bit of a twist, and so decided on a Celtic-inspired ring which reflects his highland heritage.”

Our gorgeous bride wore Rachel Simpson’s Gardenia shoes in softest peach, which were were both delicately vintage-looking and comfy enough, with their mid-height heel, to wear all day long, right through to ceilidh dancing. She spritzed on Terry de Gunzburg‘s rose-scented ‘Rouge Nocturne’, bought specially for her wedding day from Harrods. Craig and Eva’s whimsical portrait shots of Kimberley’s wedding morning are simply stunning; the very epitome of a modern day Shakespeare’s Hermia.

“I chose Anne Marie McElroy and Julie Diplacito to do hair and make-up for me, my bridesmaids and my mum. They were wonderful – very calm and helpful, and they truly made us all look fabulous. I don’t think the four of us have ever looked so good, we all got lots of compliments!”

“My dress was Mystere by Claire Pettibone. As soon as I got engaged I began looking through magazines to get an idea of the different bridal designers out there, and I was drawn time and time again to Claire Pettibone’s style. Her designs are so romantic, slightly bohemian and ethereal, and she has such a distinctive signature style; you know when you’re looking at a Claire Pettibone creation.

The moment I laid eyes on Mystere, I knew she was my dress – it was everything I was looking for. With a sweetheart neckline, cap sleeves, lace and subtle sparkle, it had quite a classic look, however the sheer back with intricate detailing and the ivory and pink flower really set it apart – I loved it and felt incredibly special wearing it.”

Kimberley searched high and low for the perfect Juliet cap veil with no success; until Love My Dress came to the rescue. The lovely bride adored our beloved blog in the run up to her nuptials (aww shucks!), and is particularly partial to our touchingly honest Sunday ‘From The Heart’ features.

“I knew right from the beginning that I wanted a Juliet cap veil, they’re so wonderfully romantic and unusual, but nothing looked quite right. With only a couple of months to go, Love My Dress featured a destination wedding and the bride wore a Juliet cap veil; instantly I knew I had found what I was looking for.

When I contacted Megan at Couture Bridal Accessories to make my veil she was so helpful. She made sure we found the perfect shade of ivory to complement my dress and I couldn’t have been happier with it, the detail was exquisite and the tulle incredibly soft. I received so many comments on it; everyone loved its vintage look.”

“I wore a garnet and diamond pendant necklace which I chose because Saul’s birth stone is a garnet (and because it’s gorgeous).  My earrings were sapphire and diamond studs; these were both my something borrowed (from my mum) and my something blue. I also wore a beautiful sparkly tennis bracelet which was a gift from Saul on the morning of the wedding.”

Mike, a family friend, kindly allowed Kimberley to borrow his vintage Citroen to get her to the church, gallantly chauffeured by a second family friend, Ross.

“St Conan’s Kirk has always had special significance for us. In the early days of our relationship Saul and I lived in different parts of Scotland, so I regularly had to hop on a coach for a few hours at a time to go visit him ‘out in the sticks’.”

“The journey took me past a beautiful church which I was determined to find out more about; it turned out to be St Conan’s Kirk and when Saul and I visited, we both fell in love with it. It has a mix of architectural styles which really appealed to us and being set on the banks of Loch Awe makes it feel very romantic. As Saul’s family are from the West Coast and he plays for the local shinty team, Glenorchy Camanachd, getting married at the Kirk felt very personal to us.”

“My uncle Tommy walked me down the aisle. He’s very special person to both myself and Saul, and he did a wonderful job of keeping me calm on the day. He’s a bit of a prankster and produced a rubber rat from his pocket at the beginning of his ‘Uncle of the Bride’ speech, cue much laughter from the room! Saul’s youngest brother Kyle piped me down the aisle to Highland Cathedral. It doesn’t get more emotional than that, does it? I’m still surprised to this day that I wasn’t a blubbering mess walking down the aisle.”

As there wasn’t much scope to customise their vows, the couple spent some time choosing their readings. Kimberley’s cousin Craig read 1 John 4:7-12 and Saul’s mum read some beautiful verses from Song of Songs 2:8-10. 14. 16; 8:6-7.

I hear my Beloved
See how he comes
Leaping on the mountains,
Bounding over the hills.
My Beloved is like a gazelle,
Like a young stag.
See where he stands
Behind our wall.
He looks in at the window,
He peers through the lattice.
My Beloved lifts up his voice,
He says to me,
“Come then, my love,
My lovely one, come.
My dove, hiding in the clefts of the rock
In the coverts of the cliff,
Show me your face,
Let me here your voice;
For your voice is sweet
And your face is beautiful.”
My beloved is mine and I am his.
Set me like a seal on your heart,
Like a seal on your arm.
For love is strong as Death,
Jealousy relentless as Sheol.
The flash of it is a flash of fire,
A flame of the Lord himself.
Love no flood can quench,
No torrents drown.

Not to be outdone in the style stakes, Saul wore a kilt he inherited from his late grandpa, teamed with a new kilt jacket, waistcoat and sporran from MacGregor & MacDuff. He and his three best men are at once beautifully traditional and rustically charming.

MacGregor & MacDuff provided wonderful service and even my allergic-to-shopping husband enjoyed the experience. Saul’s kilt pin was pretty special as I had it custom made for him as a wedding gift. It was silver and incorporated a lot of things that are meaningful to him – it feels like we created a future family heirloom which could be passed down the generations.”

Kimberley and Saul were engaged for a little over two years before they tied the knot, and loved the opportunity a long engagement gave them to plan and research their preferred suppliers. Suppliers like the incredible Craig & Eva Sanders.

“Our photographers were Craig & Eva Sanders and they are absolutely amazing. We actually picked our photographers before we did anything else, and made sure they were free on our chosen date before we confirmed it. They have a dreamy, fine-art style which is full of light, and we just couldn’t envisage anyone else capturing our wedding. Craig and Eva really put us at ease with their camaraderie and humour, and Eva was a good sport when one of our pals needed a partner for a ceilidh dance. She really went above and beyond the call of duty with that one!”

“We chose White Balloon Films as our videographers – I actually discovered them after they filmed one of my friend’s weddings, and although I then spent some time researching other suppliers, there was no one else out there who could match their talent. They even used a drone for some spectacular aerial shots. Stewart and Alina are lovely people and they are completely unobtrusive yet manage to capture the most beautiful shots.”

“For any couples out there umming and ahhing about whether or not to have a videographer, I would say go for it. Your big day will pass very quickly and there will be so much going on that there’s no way you can remember it all. Having a wedding film means you can re-live it, and being able to hear your vows and the speeches again is really special.”

“I bought one bridesmaid’s dress from a sample sale at Angelique Lamont and the other dress from For Her and For Him (hurrah for the Little Book for Brides!). I was really keen to have a similar style of dress for my girls, but in two different colours. I was really pleased with the end result and thought they looked really elegant in their dresses. The girls wore their own shoes and dainty sparkly hair pins from Accessorize.”

“I bought my bridesmaids, Judy and Caroline, matching necklaces however I managed to forget a bag of goodies when travelling to the Kirk the day before the wedding, and unfortunately the necklaces were in there. Saul’s mum very kindly came to the rescue and let the girls borrow some lovely diamond pendant necklaces.”

Kimberley’s wildly tumbling blooms were crafted by . These soft, watercolour inspired creations perfectly complement the bride’s ethereal style.

“We met Di at a wedding fair by The Wedding Collective (they showcase THE BEST suppliers) and as soon as we started chatting, I knew we had found the right person – Di’s style matched our vision perfectly. I asked for soft, watercolour-inspired florals with a wild and whimsical vibe to match our Midsummer Night’s Dream theme and Di worked her magic to make our wedding day decor look completely dreamy.”

My bridal bouquet smelled fantastic, with a mix of blushing bride proteas, sweet avalanche roses, tuberosa, honeysuckle and mint. In the evening reception room, Di also brought in trees which looked incredible – when we first walked in, it felt truly enchanting. We were also lucky enough to have a family friend, Justine, do our church flowers. The colours and style matched Myrtle & Bracken’s bouquets and buttonholes beautifully. She’s a very talented lady and has recently opened her own floristry business, The Thistle & The Rose.”

As she entered her reception with her brand new husband (eek!) and her brand new piece of sparkle, Kimberley also exchanged her gorgeous veil for a stunning, glittering Bo & Luca headpiece.

“I wore my veil during the day, however at night I wanted to look a little more bohemian. I was on Pinterest one evening and came across a gorgeous sparkling hairpiece. Luckily, the image noted the designer, Bo & Luca, so I logged on to their website straight away and found the Hera headpiece. Unfortunately it was sold out in the silver chain colour I wanted, so I emailed them and they added me to their waitlist.”

“As time went on and I didn’t hear anything, I began looking for something else but nothing caught my eye. With about a month or so to go, I got an email to tell me more pieces had been released. I was so happy (and relieved) and  I got my order in straight away and soon after, received my beautiful, glittering headpiece, just in the nick of time. I truly loved it wearing it and impressively, it stayed put during an entire night of dancing.”

Cottiers in Glasgow’s West End played host to the couple’s reception; dripping with character and charm while thousands of fairy lights added to the ethereal atmosphere.

“As lovers of good food and wine, Cottiers didn’t disappoint – we enjoyed a smoked salmon starter, beef for the main course and a truly scrumptious Eton mess for dessert. We didn’t hire an event planner, but having planned my own wedding I think I would really enjoy being a wedding co-ordinator! I’m not sure if my obsession with weddings will ever end, though my husband looks forward to the day when I stop watching wedding-related TV shows…When it came to decorating the venue, Erin the in-house wedding co-ordinator was very helpful and supportive. She was great at making sure everything looked as I had envisaged and that all went to plan.”

“Saul’s parents sourced us antlers and slices of wood that were a huge feature in our decor – they looked fantastic! Our florist then added glass cloches, tea lights, flowers and foliage. I also DIY’d our table plan – I bought a big wagon wheel and lots of ribbon, then wove the ribbon around the spokes to make a dreamcatcher.  A bit different but I really loved it. For the evening reception, we hired sequin tablecloths to add a touch of whimsy – they looked great and sparkled under the fairy lights.”

“Our cake was from Custom Cakes By Lynsey. We didn’t want a traditional iced fruit cake, so we plumped for a naked cake. We liked its rustic simplicity and it tasted as good as it looked. My mum still complains to this day that she never got a piece of it – she was too busy dancing! We also had a dessert table from Big Bear Bakery. It included marshmallows, brownies, macaroons, and rhubarb and white chocolate tarts, YUM. We had hoped there might be a little more left over from the dessert table the next day, but no luck…our guests enjoyed it as much as we did.”

Kimberley and Saul set up a guestbook station with a polaroid camera and a dress up box for guests. Their guestbook is a fantastic collection of photos of friends and family, recommendations for countries to travel to and suggestions for names for their future children.

“We booked Bahookie Band for our evening ceilidh. Best. Decision. Ever. They’re a rock ceilidh band and we danced all night to their crazy mash up of traditional fiddles with urban, dance and rock music. We struggled with choosing a first dance track as none of our favourite songs are really suitable. In the end we chose The Maccabees’ ‘Toothpaste Kisses.’

“Our favourite part of the day was everyone’s happiness; all of our hard work paid off, and all of our family and friends both from home and overseas (with a few much-missed exceptions) came to celebrate our love – it was truly wonderful. We had the best day ever, with the best people ever, and we ended up as Mr and Mrs – perfect.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“No matter how stressed you feel in the run up to the wedding, please believe me when I say, that so long as you end up married to the person who you know you want to spend the rest of your life with, then you’ve done it right. When all is said and done, the things that didn’t quite go to plan will fade into insignificance and you’ll be left with beautiful memories of the atmosphere, the laughter, the tears and the smiles.”
