A Watters Gown for a Cool, Modern and Effortlessly Elegant London Wedding

What an absolutely beautiful day – the kind I adore in the lead up to Christmas; cool but sunny, an air of excitement and seasonal warmth being offered by strangers, just perfect. We’re heading back from London on the train, having been in the capital to help the wonderful Emmy London celebrate the launch of her beautiful Chelsea boutique. Take a look at both our @lovemydress and my personal @annabelbeeforth Instagram accounts for a peak at what I’ve been up to.

This afternoon’s real wedding is the epitome of modern wedding-day elegance. City bank worker Beth married Economics teacher Alex on 2nd July this year with a ceremony at Christ Church Mayfair, followed by a reception at the Angler Restaurant in South Place Hotel. I adore the modern day cool vibe of this wedding; the all-white bouquet, that wow-factor gown and the overall feeling of ‘effortless’ that oozes beautifully from these images.

“We met going to the church that we got married in, so it was amazing to be married there, surrounded by the people that had seen us get together. We were only engaged for 5 months before we got married. We wanted our friends and family to be well fed, well watered, and for there to be lots of dancing.”

Beth looked sensational in her Watters gown – a purchase from London Bride Couture in Victoria.

“Because we only had five  months until the big day, I only booked one appointment at London Bride Couture and went there with the plan to get a dress with my sister that day.”

“The girls were fantastic. The dress that was one that they picked out for me.  My Watters dress made me feel beautiful.”

“Annabel from Beauty Call did my hair and makeup. I couldn’t recommend her enough. She was on my level and did such a great job.”

“I wore a pair of Manolo Blahnik Hangisi flats. My sister calls them ‘Carrie shoes’.”

“There was only one dream about my wedding day, image wise, and it was those shoes. I loved them then and I love them now.”

“I wore ‘Peony and Blush Suede’ by Jo Malone, which is my normal day scent. Alex asked me to wear it so I smelled the same walking down the aisle.”

“A friend of mine, florist Becca Nicholl, did our flowers. I wanted white with a lot of greenery, and a big sprawling bouquet for me. She captured my vision perfectly.”

“When I looked down the aisle, it was covered with flowers. In my head, they get bigger every time that I remember.”

“We hired black cabs to transport us to the ceremony, which turned out to be a great idea as there was an anti-Brexit rally down Piccadilly the day of our wedding that they dodged effectively.”

“One of my bridesmaids wore a dress from Whistles, and the other wore a dress from White Runway in Australia. My bridesmaids picked their own dresses in navy.”

“Before we went to the church, we stopped at Brixton Market and walked through to take pictures, because I had lived in Brixton prior to getting married: It was my home away from home, the refuge I took in being an expat.”

“When we walked in, everyone sitting at the tables stood up and started clapping. It was glorious and special to me.”

“We are both Christians and our faith was a big part of our ceremony.”

Beth’s father joined her in her walk to the reception.

“We were accompanied by the song ‘Well’, a modernised version of the old hymn, sung by my childhood friend Claire who had flown over from Australia.”

“Walking down the aisle, seeing the flowers everywhere, seeing my oldest friend singing a song that I loved, seeing Al at the end – that was the best part of the day for me.”

When it came to sharing vows, Beth has some lovely advice for fellow brides…

“One of the best pieces of advice I got was from one of Al’s best men, Henry: ‘Don’t worry about saying your vows loud. Just whisper them if that’s all you can do. Everyone will get the point’. At one point I tried to raise my voice and it came out all croaky, so I just went back to whispering again.”

“We had two readings; Psalm 121, a psalm of thankfulness, and Ephesians 5, which talks about how a relationship between husband and wife mirrors the love Jesus Christ has for his people. We chose these readings because we wanted to base our marriage on the firm foundations of God’s love for us in Jesus Christ.”

“Our rings were from A&S Jewellers in Hatton Garden. Alex bought my engagement ring from there because they made him feel comfortable on a customer service level, so we went back for our wedding rings on the same basis.”

The couple turned to the talents of  Wheels and Co Photography to document their wedding in photographs.

“Aside from being extremely talented, Vicky and Pete are our friends and having your mate with you as you get ready, snapping away was so great. They captured the best moments that I didn’t even think to remember.”

“The South Place Hotel is around the corner from my office, and on a whim I asked if they did weddings. When I walked in I knew the venue fit everything that we wanted and the food was beautiful.”

“The setting of the restaurant was so lovely that we didn’t need a lot in terms of decor. Becca bought a bunch of trailing Ivy, pots of herbs and greenery which she put around the restaurant.”

“Our cake was three tiers with buttercream. It was made by yet another pal (my friends could get together to make their own wedding firm!), Meg Mahoney, who bakes under the name Little Leo Cakery.”

“We loved the process of choosing the cake. The cake itself had Walnut with coffee frosting on the bottom, rum cinnamon cake with banana in the middle, and carrot cake on the top, covered with buttercream and more flowers from Becca.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“I read a lot of blogs that said ‘the details really matter’ about the day. I would say that, for me, this was not true. I worried too much about the details and in the end I compromised on a lot of them because of time, or money, or other constraints. But on the day, the details really did not matter. Your husband is there, your family and friends are there and everyone has a drink in their hand? Everything else is secondary.

My other advice is: if you work 60 hours a week, decide not to employ a wedding planner and have a 5 month engagement: don’t sweat the small stuff. You literally don’t have time for that.”

What an incredibly stylish day – and brides, please take note about the wedding planner! I’ve been blogging for 7 years now and seen a real shift in attitudes towards wedding planners – they’ve gone from being a largely misunderstood role to one that is proving more and more vital in the lives of modern couples who might be struggling to fit wedding planning into their busy lives. We recommend a number of talented and hard working wedding planners through our Little Book For Brides wedding directory. Remember that most planners offer a range of services from full wedding planning to on-the-day support.

My love and thanks to Beth and Alex for so kindly sharing their wedding with us today. You might like to see more ‘Watters’ brides here ladies!

  1. I can see why the bride is in love with those shoes, they are gorgeous. Also loving the veil, a beautiful contrast to the elegant lace of the dress. The walk through Brixton is amazing, I love shots like these, so unexpected. Congratulations x
