A Vintage Glam Inspired City Wedding

Ohhh lovelies, you would laugh if you could see me right now. I’m glued to the Australian Open tennis (just a little bit in love with Roger Federer, are you too?), sitting directly under the air conditioning, and my patient husband is regularly supplying me with cold drinks in between aloe vera applications. It’s heatwave season here in Oz and with my English rose complexion I get sunburnt the moment I step outside. Today I had a momentary lapse by forgetting my hat. So to cheer myself up amidst the burning sensations every time I move (and shout ‘yipppeee!’ as Feds pelts another winner down the line) I’m revelling in these light-filled images by Mairéad from Remain in Light Photography and the beautiful bride’s luscious dress.

Laura, a specialist support worker in a women’s hospital, married RAC patrolman Michael on the 21st of August 2015 at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich – a beautiful space local to the couple that they fell in love with. Their reception was then held nearby at The Trafalgar Tavern.

“The style of the day was vintage glam, with an East End London feel. We loved the character of the tavern and its old-fashioned, East London vibe.”

My breath was literally taken away upon first sight of Laura’s incredible leaf-embellished Estilo Moda gown with sleeves. Isn’t it absolutely divine?

“I wanted something a bit different, so I had the dress made for me. I liked the long sleeves, long train and the fitted style.”Laura complimented her stylish dress with an equally stylish pair of blue Manolo Blahnik heels, a gorgeous floral crown made by Karina from Woodlane Florists, pearl earrings, and a spray of her favourite perfume by Marc Jacobs.

The wee little helpers resembled woodland fairies in their Monsoon dresses with intricate lace detail, gold sandals, and pretty floral crowns.

The two maids donned gorgeous gowns from House of Fraser with heels and accessories from Monsoon and totally nailed the vintage glam brief. Hair and makeup was by Justina Sullivan from Beautiful Brides.

Laura’s dad accompanied her for the aisle walk as the church choir sang ‘Ave Maria’. The couple chose two readings; the Old Testament Song of Solomon 2:10-13 and 1 Corinthians 1:3 1-7.

“We really loved the words in these readings and thought they fitted well.”

Looking handsome in a blue suit tailored by Apsley Tailors, Michael added a red tie by TM Lewin and a pair of Hudson shoes.

“Michael and I met through a friend and were together for 11 years before we got engaged and married just over a year later.”

“Our favourite part of the day was after the ceremony and having the chance to see and talk to family and friends. I was a bit nervous before and during the ceremony, so then I could relax a bit and enjoy spending time with guests.”

Woodlane Florists created beautiful bouquets filled with a range of white flowers mixed with loads of green foliage, which perfectly matched the bride and bridesmaid’s attire.

“A lot of wedding photography we saw seemed really staged and unnatural, and we wanted something a bit different from that. Mairéad from Remain in Light Photography captured all the details of the day really naturally – we are so happy with the photographs.”

Laura and Michael made their own menus via a template from Etsy, whilst Laura’s sister-in-law Nicola created the invitations. To add pizzazz to the tavern, the couple added vintage glam touches in the form of light-up letters from Wedding Letter Hire, gold-frames to form the table plan, and sequin tablecloths from Pudding Bridge. The London phone box photo booth was hired from Photo Crazy and they found the post box, vintage books, lanterns, and 3D numbers via eBay.

The three-tiered cake with white gold leaf and green foliage by Sugared Saffron was created to fit the vintage glam theme. It’s such a shame to have to cut into cakes that are such beautiful works of art!

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“The run-up was quite stressful, especially as we had quite a few DIY projects, but it was worth it.

 Enjoy every moment – stop and try to take everything in, as it really does go by in the blink of an eye. I had read that before and didn’t believe it, but it’s true!”
