It’s Liberty in Love’s 7th birthday soon – tell us about about some of your highlights from the last 7 years?

Of course!  I’d say that our main highlights have been…

  • Collaborations – We’ve been part of some AMAZING shoots. We’ve worked at Owen House Wedding Barn with Helen Roscoe as well recent creative photoshoots with amazing people like Pocketful of Dreams and Aleeka Events. There’s something really creatively satisfying about crafting beautiful images. And I just love working with other like-minded people in our industry. There’s no quicker way to gain inspiration and reignite those creative juices!
  • Building a great team – It’s taken years, but we now have a wonderful team on board.  In the online world, changes happen so quickly, and having the right talent behind us has helped grow our business, year on year. At the heart of it though, it’s still Tabby and me. And I think having a personal touch to our customer service has been a huge strength of ours. Weddings are so personal, and brides deserve a personal service. There isn’t anyone else that knows our products more than us – and we genuinely care that our brides utterly love what they buy.
  • Awards – We’ve picked up some fab awards (such as those hosted by The Wedding Industry Awards and You and Your Wedding), and I was also involved as a judge in The Wedding Industry Awards 2016, judging the accessories category.  It’s a very lovely thing to have the recognition, and the parties are such fun and a chance to really dress up for the evening.
  • Positive comments and photos from brides We absolutely adore getting feedback from our brides. It’s an honour to be involved in their wedding day, and getting positive comments from our brides is probably the most rewarding part of our jobs. I still love weddings, and there’s nothing that makes me smile more than seeing photos from their special day.

How has Liberty in Love changed since those first days?

As you might expect, a lot has changed from the early days! I think that a key influence is that the wedding planning journey is now much more online-focused (with a big move towards mobile). Brides now look to the internet/social media for the discovery of ideas for their wedding day, sourcing of suppliers and finding unique products.

This has been a big driver of change for us –  to cater to demand, we’ve grown our product range from 100 products to 1000, offering our brides greater choice across more product categories.  We source pieces from around the world, and now include unique pieces by acclaimed designers like St ErasmusUntamed Petals and Ben-Amun. Our brides love the unique and beautiful, and I just love searching out these pieces (I know, such a tough job!). We’ve also invested more into our customer service across different channels – and just generally just having a greater presence on social media, as that’s so important now.

We’re definitely older and wiser these days and a lot of our changes have been as a result of listening to our customers, for instance, with adding more video to earrings and other products, improving the website navigation, and so on.

What pieces from your collection are timeless and always popular?

The combination of luminescent pearls and clear crystals are forever a bridal staple. Our Bocheron pearl drop earrings by Stephanie Browne are a truly classic case in point. As they’ve been loved so much, we’ve introduced a variety of colour ways, and have necklaces and bracelets to match, both with pearls or just with crystal.

Outside of the Bocheron collection, our Ivory and Co accessories are incredibly popular.  These include the Moonstruck earrings, Cotton Club crystal drop earrings, Belmont crystal drop earrings, Montgomery crystal drop earrings, Catalina pearl and crystal comb, Modena crystal embellished bracelet and Dior crystal blossoms and pearl sprig headpiece.

And looking forward, what are the coming trends in wedding accessories?

I see a move towards greater individuality and more of a fashion focus. More backdrop necklaces, delicate chokers, more colour, and the use of more unusual stones in jewellery.

Do you think brides are more daring with their accessories than they were 7 years ago?

Brides are definitely braver (and more confident) in their choices these days. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen yellow gold and rose gold pieces coming to the fore. Plus, non-ivory wedding shoes are no longer unusual. Definitely, brides are now confident about bringing in ‘non-wedding’ elements to their big day.

What is your advice for brides who are looking for their accessories?

  • Think about your accessories as being the finishing touch – like the gorgeous icing on the cake. The focal point is your dress with the accessories playing a supporting role. As such, I’d recommend deciding on the dress, shoes, and any hair accessories and veil that you’re wearing, and then the jewellery (in that order). Generally, the name of the game is to achieve a look that flatters and you feel utterly amazing in, as well as having a look that feels balanced.
  • Consider your dress colour and allow this to guide your metal colour choice. There are many shades of ivory/white. Creamier hues of ivory and champagne look great with gold or rose gold, while cool, brighter whites pair beautifully with silver.
  • Give yourself plenty of time – try everything on with your dress in advance to make sure you’re happy with the final look. Take your hair accessory along with you to your hair trial.
  • For bracelets, I’d definitely recommend getting a bracelet that fits well and isn’t too loose on your wrist. Not only will this stay in place better for photos and not jangle about annoyingly, it’ll be more flattering as well. Some of our designers have bracelets in long and short lengths (like Ivory and Co), while others have bracelet designs with ribbon ties, which are very adjustable for a custom fit.
  • There’s beauty in the edit. Pick the right amount of accessories and don’t be afraid to scale back. I’d say this is particularly key if your dress incorporates a lot of detail or heavy embroidery. Be guided by your dress’s stand-out features.
  • You can always choose a different look for evening, if you are having real trouble deciding between so many beautiful accessories, and are a bit wary of letting loose for the daytime look. I wish I’d done this myself, actually!
  • Please do ignore well-meaning advice about avoiding bold choices that you might regret in 10 years time. Just go for what you love and what looks amazing on you right now.

If you could choose five must-have bridal accessories from your collection, what would be your top picks?

These handmade pearl drops by Stephanie Browne have a special aisle-worthy feel to them. There are lots of pieces to match in the Stephanie Browne Bocheron collection, from hair accessories to necklaces to bracelets.

This hair vine is perhaps the most versatile piece ever.  We’ve seen it worn boho, high glam, classic… we’ve added ribbons, supplied as a longer version… the list just goes on!  For quite a distinctive looking hair vine, it has almost universal appeal.

Our customers rave about these crystal drop earrings from Ivory and Co!  These glistening drops have more than a touch of starlet style about them and there’s a matching pendant necklace too. I’ll admit that I’m rather partial to baguette crystals, and I think the price point of these (at £55) belie their lovely quality.

Chez Bec’s pearl and crystal-dotted rose gold backdrop necklace is perfect for the style-forward bride looking to show off a deep-backed dress.  It’s also available in silver or yellow gold.

Harriet Wilde makes some of the most supremely beautiful shoes, and these laser cut heels are simply divine.  They’re romantic yet fashion-forward… and, the clincher is they are really secure and comfortable on the foot too.  I’ll confess to falling in love with these at first glance, and love wearing mine.

Thank you so much Siu, it’s been a joy to hear more about Liberty in Love and to find out more about these beautiful accessories. Those Stephanie Browne earrings would be on my shopping list, which leads us rather wonderfully onto the competition…
