A Savannah Miller Dress for a Spanish Olive Grove Inspired Wedding

Katie and Daniel 84

I’ve been to some beautiful weddings in my time, but never actually to a wedding abroad.  Today’s beautiful sun-drenched day makes me really wish I had been a guest at this one as its just stunning.

Katie and Daniel married on the 3rd of September 2017 at the stunning Casa Felix near Barcelona in Spain.  The day was planned by Elaine and Lauren from A Spanish Do. Katie wore a beautiful long sleeved gown with a sheer patterned overlay, by Savannah Miller, from her ‘Nine by Savannah Miller’ Collection, altered to give the gown a v necked back. Elegant and unusual, a winning combination.

“I thought that I would walk down the aisle in a dress with a large train but I realised that I would find this style impractical for our venue and the hot weather.  I wanted a dress that I would feel completely comfortable in and as soon as I tried my dress on, I didn’t want to take it off.  It had beautiful long sleeves and a high neck but it was delicate and light enough for the Spanish summer.  In the evening I changed into a sleeveless scoop back beaded dress for the party.”

The talent behind today’s beautiful photos was Olivia & Dan Photography.  I absolutely love the quality of light they’ve caught, and the mix of details, unconscious expressions and portraits.  Daniel and Katie were understandably thrilled.

“Our photographers were an extremely important decision for us and we knew as soon as met Olivia and Dan that they were the perfect photographers for us.  We spoke to them a lot in the run up to the day about what we liked and disliked and fell in love with their style of photography as we saw more and more of their work.  On the day itself, it was fantastic to have both of them there to capture so many different elements of the preparation and some very personal moments.  They were extremely subtle and yet still managed to capture so many amazing moments.  The whole wedding party complimented us on how at ease Olivia and Dan made them feel and we can’t echo that enough.  We are over the moon with the final prints too.”

“We were inspired by the venue itself and surrounding area and landscape.  The Spanish olive groves had a huge influence on the overall style of the wedding – from the colour scheme, bridesmaid dresses and floral arrangements.  Casa Felix was the perfect venue for the relaxed and inclusive wedding that we dreamed of.”

Paradiso Barcelona were recommended to us  for flowers by our planners and they were fantastic!  The venue and landscape itself required very little dressing so we kept the decor to a minimum and went for a complimentary floral colour scheme.  We wanted to use lots of olive branches and lots of foliage with white and pale peach flowers to pick out the rose gold accent colour.”

To accessorize Katie wore a gorgeous chapel length veil in ivory tulle with pencil edging made by family friend Lynda, a hair arrangement by Floral Studio Events, her grandmother’s beautiful antique watch and a pair of Tiffany pearl studs which were a gift from her mum.

“After hours of shoe shopping I decided to wear a pair of high street white strap heels that I already owned as I knew I could walk and dance all day and night in them with ease.”

Friend and ex housemate Holly did Katie’s natural make up, while another friend, Gemma, kindly offered to style Katie’s beautiful red locks into a soft up-do, the perfect foil for her elegant gown.

Daniel looked super smart in a black suit from The Kooples, worn with a bow tie, shoes from Loake and a watch from INSTRMNT.

The bridesmaids looked fresh and lovely in olive or sage green dresses from Two BirdsASOS and Little Mistress, worn with rose gold heels from ASOS and flower Crowns by Natasha at Floral Studio Events.

“It was important for the bridesmaids to feel comfortable and we decided to go with an olive/sage green palette but let each bridesmaid pick their own dress.”

Katie was accompanied down the aisle by her brother Lloyd, to ‘Kissing You’ by Des’ree before she and Daniel said their vows under the Spanish sun.

“We had a legal ceremony in London a couple of weeks before (that many of our guests were unaware of) but we wanted to exchange rings and say vows tailored to suit us.  Xavier who married us also spoke a lot about how we met and our parents and families which was important to us.  He was fantastic and had everyone laughing and crying.”

“Both of our brothers were ushers and we asked them to each do a reading.  One read a piece from Bob Marley about life and the other read a Dalia Lama quote.”

“Daniel carefully researched and picked my engagement ring himself but we went shopping and chose our wedding bands together in Hatton Garden in London.”

“We created our own olive-inspired stationery and our friend Sarah painted lots of wooden signs around the venue and wrote all of our place names.  We used photographs of both of us at certain ages as the table number signs and used some of our favourite song lyrics framed around the venue to guide and direct guests from one area to another.”

Decor was kept to a minimum as really, the venue speaks for itself, but Katie and Daniel did hang white bunting outside and rose gold garlands in the disco room, as well as a DIY photobooth.

Catering was the work of Gau Gourmet, while the beautiful cake was by Marie’s Cakes Sitges.

“We wanted a simple cake that would be light for our guests to enjoy late in the evening and so opted for a three tier lemon and vanilla sponge cake covered in buttercream icing and decorated in olive leaves. This went down a storm and we even got to cut it with a traditional Spanish sword.”

“For favours we gave each of our guests Spanish wooden fans and a fortune cookie with an ice breaker question or task inside.”

Entertainment came courtesy of Suit and Music while friends Dan and Lara also performed during the aperitivo drinks.

“Music is a huge part of our lives and we absolutely loved that all of our guests joined us on the dance floor to sing and dance along to ‘One day like this’ by Elbow.  It was one of the best moments of the day.  We have seen Elbow several times together and this song particularly reminded us of some incredible times at Glastonbury together.”

“The people really made it for us.  There were some incredible moments of seeing lots of people from all different aspects of our lives come together and have an incredible weekend. We felt extremely lucky and loved.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“It’s your day.  Stand by your dream and your opinions and enjoy and savour every second because it goes so quickly.

Planning is key, especially if you’re having a destination wedding.  Talk to each other and make sure you’re on the same page throughout – Dan did so much of the set up on the day with the planners and did an incredible job of putting our vision into action.”

Use a hashtag – this was an easy way to see photos from different guests in one place. We saw so many moments and memories from different viewpoints that we had no idea about.”
