Red Roses and Louis Mariette ~ Glamour at the Glasgow Art Club...

Morning all! Let's get right down to it today, I have lots to blog this week and due to my epic adventures in London last week I'm a teensy bit behind schedule, so I shall waste no further time introducing you to this absolutely gorgeous wedding that took place at the The Glasgow Art Club on 26 November last year, and was photographed by the wonderful Lillian & Leonard.  I have to say, I adore this venue, and the lighting at that time of year has resulted in some wonderfully dramatic images.

I was completely delighted to discover that Amy discovered her headpiece designer, Louis Mariette, via this feature on Love My Dress...

"Love My Dress was a great source of ideas in the run up to my weding, and it was nice to read real accounts of wedding planning too!  I actually wore a headpiece called 'Bird of Paradise' by Louis Mariette, which I found via Love My Dress, and which remains one of my absolute favourite wedding purchases.  I got this from Melle Cloche along with my veil..."

"Our table plan was made of escort cards strung in rows over a big frame with loads of photos of the two of us with friends and family.  That worked really well and meant there was a display later where guests could go and spot themselves in the pictures.

My florist was Sophie from I Heart Flowers who I found through the Lillian & Leonard blog.  Sophie is great and came to me with loads of ideas when all I had managed to come up with was ‘red’.   My bouquet was tied with a deep red velvet ribbon and the bridesmaids had black velvet – really beautiful..."

"Because the Art Club is a working gallery most of the decor was already done for us which was fantastic!  We have a couple of prints we love that we displayed on the day.  One was ‘This is where the magic happens’ and was outside the ceremony room, the other was ‘time to drink champagne and dance on tables’ which we displayed with our cake.  We had black table cloths and gold candelabras for the meal and it worked really well in the gallery room.  Appropriately dramatic for a winter wedding I thought...."

"We got the bridesmaid dresses from Kaliko.  I never had it on my list of shops to look in but I saw the dresses in the window when I was passing and managed to get all the sizes online.  They were black, v-neck and knee length with a silk band round the bottom.  We had them customised with the same silk band running down the back..." 

"The girls all felt and looked great – I was so pleased.I wanted red accessories for the girls and actually really struggled to find the right shade.  Good old Debenhams saved the day though when I found beautiful  hair slides in the perfect colour of red.  The bridesmaids wore them to clip their hair up at one side and it looked lovely."

London City Chic Wedding Inspired by Art Deco Glamour...

Hey lovely ladies and gents, I'm busy having one of those days where mostly, everything goes kind of wrong. Ever get those days? Come on Tuesday, buck your ideas up, I need you to be working for me today! It's a good job I have some wedding day pretty to keep me going, seriously!!

So this afternoon, and somewhat unplanned *moves the discussion post I did have planned back to later this week!*, I'm bringing forward a rather stunning wedding I have recently finalised editing for the enjoyment of all you city-chic style brides.

Nothing beats that wedding day smile, those tender embraces and the 'look of love that' all good wedding photographers know just how to capture on camera. You know I'm a total sucker for wedding photography - all brides are beautiful in my books.  But bride and model Ali here is rather a show-stopper, don't you agree?  I adore her hair!

Ali married her beau Charles on 29 May last year at Tompkins Restaurant and Attic Bar in the Pan Peninsula building near canary wharf, London.  The day was one full of glamour and style - a true 'city chic' wedding if ever there was one....

Ali chose a dress from Ellis Bridals to turn heads with... 

"I am very lucky to have worked with some amazing bridal designers over the years. It also means the novelty of putting on a wedding dress had passed so I thought it would probably be very difficult for me to find "the dress". However, I was working at a bridal trade exhibition in September of 2010 for Ellis Bridal, a lovely company that I had worked for numerous times. Everytime we do the shows, all us girls say which ones we love. One of the other models came out in this dress and I said "wow! I love that one!" I just couldn’t stop looking at her in it. As soon as I got a chance, I put it on and I just knew then that it was the dress.

It was simple, but I felt very feminine and sexy as it hugged my curves and the black bow belt just finished it off. This was definitely the dress - I didn’t even go dress shopping after I had discovered it!"

"I designed my shoes myself using the fantastic Upper Street website. I designed a cute pair of red shoes first to see their quality. They came out beautifully so I set about designing my wedding shoes. I decided upon a peep toe with small platform and 3.5" heel (at 5ft 10" i couldn't go any higher without towering above my husband to be!) it was great that i could select heel height.

I went for silver snakeskin leather and a pewter leather bow. I wanted a pair of shoes i would wear again rather than have an ivory satin pair. As a little something extra, I paid extra for the wording "On My Wedding Day, 29th May 2011" inscribed in gold on the insole of each shoe.

They were perfect and so comfortable all night long. I have worn them out to several occasions since too and evey time I look down at them I remember that special day!"

  

"I adore anything art deco so my overall theme and styling was along those lines. My colours where Ivory and Black with soft pinks & amethyst...."

 

"The wonderful Jo-Anne Edwards made my wedding cake {see contact details at end of feature}. I had created a design and emailed it to her. I had absolute faith in her creations and didn’t see the finished product until i walked into the dinning all to be seated for dinner! It was perfect and exactly like my design.

 We both love fruit cake so decided to go for a traditional brandy soaked fruit dark cake layered with marzipan and icing. The design was art deco inspired. As topper we chose to have the famous Butler & Wilson brooch, The Dancing Couple. This finished the art deco look and went perfectly with the design. The cake was finished off with some pink peonies..."

 

"I had three bridesmaids, charles's daughters Ellis who is 16, my younger sister Bev and my maid of honour was my best friend Erica. I ordered their dresses online from J Crew in the US and had them delivered to my friend in LA, who then bought them over on his next visit. I took quite a risk as they were in the sale and non refundable so I had to go on measurements alone. All three dresses fitted perfectly! I wanted them to have a simple dress that was flattering and that they could wear again. They were made from 100% silk, and I ordered them in the colour "Light Amethyst" which was a beautiful soft shade. I even ordered myself one I loved them so much!

The girls all wore shoes from New Look - reduced to £5!"

A Norwegian Affair in London...

Morning all my loves, I hope you're feeling good this Tuesday morning.  Inspired by this feature, I'm listening to some Lana Del Ray right now, I just adore her voice and have been intrigued for a while now but it's the first time I've visited her website this morning - it's amazing! Anyway I digress... we're here for the business of weddings, and I've a lovely London celebration to share this morning.

Jo and Øyvind tied the knot on 5 November 2011 and whilst the couple live in Norway, they chose to have their wedding day in London to bring together their family and friends...

"We decided early on that if we were to include something it should be meaningful to us and (ideally) homemade, although the latter turned out to be a little too ambitious for what was essentially a destination wedding!   We were also keen not to waste money and spent a lot of time looking into alternative suppliers who maybe didn’t normally sell to the wedding crowd. Car boot sales aren’t big in Norway so also we did a lot of virtual-car boot shopping via ebay which turned out to be an amazing source of all things old and quirky!"

Jo's pretty backless dress with that gorgeous bow detail was a purchase from Angelica Brides in Islington...

"It was actually my second dress and the girls there were lovely, reassuring me that I was not the first bride to change their mind, rushing the order through and accommodating my last minute fittings when I flew into London just a few days before the wedding!"

"We cannot recommend the lovely Anna and Ellie from The Flower Appreciation Society enough. Our flower-ideas had not progressed beyond the slightly dubious plan to pack 15 antique norgesglass (Norwegian jam jars) in our suitcase and have them filled with something lovely!  After a coffee meeting at Exmouth market they managed to interpret our rather vague brief into something spectacular.

Seeing the bouquets when they arrived at the hotel and the flowers filling the Drapers arms were two highlights of the day. They are amazing. Fact...."

I love Jo's style, that pretty pearl back necklace compliments her dress beautifully, and a cute cut of ribbon for her something blue too, how sweet :) 

"My necklace and hair slide were both from Untamed Petals, who make so many lovely things it was difficult to pick. The necklace is designed to be worn long but a little bit of blue ribbon and some nifty fingered bridesmaids made it into a short necklace for the day. Whilst I can’t quite wear my necklace to work I will definitely be wearing it at Christmas parties..."

"We decided to have an English and a Norwegian wedding cake. My mum spent months practicing baking and perfecting her icing techniques and flower making skills (fortunately my dad still fitted into his suit on the day!) The Norwegian cake was more difficult - Kransekake is traditionally made of concentric rings of almond cake, layered on top of each other to form tall a cone shape - not the easiest thing to bring on the plane!

In the end we flew into London a couple of days before the wedding and took over our friend’s kitchen to make the cake ourselves - a bus and a taxi journey later the tower was only leaning a little bit by the time it reached the venue!"

"My lovely girls all live in different countries and we wanted them to wear something they loved, so we decided to leave it all to them. On the day it was quite amazing how coordinated they looked!  Their dresses were from Coast, Monsoon and an American prom dress shop..."

"I am a scientist and we love cooking. So, we bought little conical flasks from a laboratory supplier and filled them with one of our favourite spice mixes made with wholesale spices from The Spiceworks. We plugged them with champagne corks kindly donated by the carrier bag load from a bar in Leicester and finished it off by writing out a selection of recipes for our guests to try on little luggage tags.

It wasn’t really practical to assemble them in Norway and so we watched on Skype as my mum and dad put everything together surrounded by clouds of spice on the dining room table in England!"

"My first dress was quite daring and as a jeans and t-shirt kind of a girl I suddenly panicked that I would spend the day worrying about the dress. I flew to London to meet my mum for what promised to be a frantic day of wedding dress shopping.  Several of the shops I had spoken to on the phone had already warned me with dark voices that I was too late to order many of their dresses. Fortunately Angelica Brides in Islington was our first stop and when I tried on the dress I suddenly relaxed, it was perfect and the girls promised they would work their miracles and ensure that it arrived in their store just in time for the wedding. Phew!

Øyvind wore an Armani suit and shoes by Paul Smith as well as a waist coat from Moods of Norway which was embroidered with the message 'made with love by really really pretty blonde girls in Norway' inside..."    

A Theatre Wedding For A Bride Who Made Her Own Dress...

Morning guys n gals! The start of a new week, sunny, and definitely no snow where I'm sat - anyone else?

I like to open up the week with a wedding and this morning's was submitted recently by the Photographer Laura Babb, whose work I've not featured before now, so it brings me pleasure today to share the wedding day photographs of Andy and Lucy, who tied the knot on 21st January at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds.

Lucy is rather a dab hand at the sewing machine and created her very own wedding dress based on a basic dress pattern from the 1950's...

"I made my own dress with some help from a dressmaker – Sarah Belinda. I have been sewing for a while now and can add this to my achievements!

I had a very simple 50s dress in mind but also wanted a top layer of lace with a scalloped edge. I also made a bolero but didn’t wear it in the end as it was quite warm on the day. 

I loved that my daughters saw me making the dress and hopefully it inspired them..."

Peter Langner Elegance ~ A 1930s Emerald Green Inspired Wedding...

Lady luck has a beautiful ebb and flow about her; she'll come and go, dipping in and out of your life day to day, influencing that natural order of things.  From the moment I woke today, lady luck rushed right into my house and brought with her a whole lot of loveliness.  Today is a GOOD day over at Love My Dress H.Q.  Three things have happened one after the other that have me so excited about what's happening for Love My Dress over the next few months and I can't wait to share my excitement with you all. I hope that today it's turning out to be a good day for you too :)

This latest wedding was photographed by one of my favourite UK wedding photographers, the wonderful Eliza Claire - yes, she who shot this little number a couple of weeks ago, and all these pretty affairs too.  This time, Eliza was lucky enough to be present to witness Hugo and Tanya on her trusty camera, tie the knot on 1 October 2011 with a ceremony at St John the Baptist in Kingston Vale, followed by a marquee reception at Tanya's parent’s house nearby. 

I send a questionnaire to all Brides who feature on Love My Dress, and I just loved reading through Tanya's...

"Love My Dress was the first blog I found and seemed to have lots of ideas that were in tune with what I imagined I wanted.  So this and Brides Magazine were my main sources of inspiration.

My dress was by Peter Langner and I bought it from Browns Brides. It was the New York dress.  I dragged my extremely patient bridesmaids round many dress shops as initially I didn’t really know what I wanted besides something that was not A-line traditional. I finally decided on something that had a 1930’s feel to it (as my engagement ring is from the ‘30’s) that was quite simple but still bridal, with a train etc..."

"The inspiration for the day came mainly from my 1930’s engagement ring and the emerald colour of my grandmother’s jewellery which I knew I wanted to wear. Everything seemed to grow out of this including our beautiful invitations designed by Sarah Graveling of Franklyn and Vincent which you can see here.  Sarah designed an amazing logo for us which we used throughout the day on the orders of service and tables as well which combined the colours and 30’s feel we wanted perfectly. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

My hair clips were vintage from Fur Coat No Knickers in Carnaby Street.  They came attached to a brooch clip and detach into two slides, you can then reattach so I’ll be able to use it in the future. The shop will also make any brooch you choose into a clip for you which I thought was great..."

"My shoes were Rachel Simpson Mimi  bought at the Bridal Rogue Gallery.  I found out about Rachel Simpson via Love My Dress..."

"I really wanted a thrown together, bright, meadow flowers kind of look for the day but had no idea how to marry this with the 30’s element. I met several florists but Mairead at Rebel Rebel was the only one who immediately understood what I wanted and also had lots of great  ideas to contribute.

Rebel Rebel specialise in seasonal British flowers so after an initial consultation I went down to the shop two weeks before the wedding and picked out flowers in the colours we had discussed from what was available then. I also got to pick out the flowers for my bouquet on the morning of the wedding which was really fun.

We were thrilled with the flowers on the day- they really captured the feel and colours I had wanted. Mairead’s idea of having the bridesmaids each carry one flower from my bouquet looked beautiful. She also made my bouquet beautifully scented with herbs, lavender and tuberose.
She and her team also made a mad dash after the service so we could reuse the pew ends and church displays in the marquee for the reception which saved us lots of money as well..."

"My bridesmaids dresses were very hard to find as everyone had their own ideas and all the girls were very different shapes. We finally found a solution in the brilliant Peter May who makes beautiful, one size fits all dresses out of parachute silk in a vast array of colours. You can tie the dress in various styles so all the girls could have their own look. In the end we choose 3 shades of green to go with my jewellery.

Peter was incredibly accommodating and I would recommend him to anyone looking for something unusual for their bridesmaids..."

 

"I didn’t have a definite “this is the dress” moment but ended up choosing between this and an Amanda Wakeley dress. I chose the Peter Langner in the end because of it’s beautiful cut and the detail of the buttoned back and train. It felt like it really captured the feel of the 30’s and was completely bridal at the same time rather than being something you might wear as an evening dress.

I am thrilled I decided on it in the end as it was perfect on the day in what ended up being the hottest ever recorded day in October. It was also really easy to dance and move around in and made me feel beautifully elegant all day (even when dancing in my bare feet at the end)..."

"Hugo and I had been at the same university but managed never to meet until years later at a music festival in Spain through some friends. After the holiday Hugo went back to Lisbon where he was working for a university and I went back to London not knowing when we would see each other again. Two weeks later I flew to Lisbon for the weekend and a couple of weeks after that Hugo came over to London. Skpe, Easyjet and Luton airport became close friends until Hugo moved to London a year and a half later.

On that first weekend my flight was delayed and as we waited we planned a trip to India as Hugo had never been, 6 months later we made our first trip and then returned for our honeymoon this autumn..."

"We really wanted a swing band to go with the 1930’s feel and felt that it would be music all generations would have fun dancing to. We found the Sax Pastilles and they played our first dance and then entertained the room for the first couple of hours, before a friend took over DJ'ing for the rest of the evening..."

Billy Buttons, Yellow Beads and Bicycles ~ A Relaxed Swedish, Summer Garden Party Wedding...

Morning ladies and gents :) I'm delighted to be taking a trip overseas for this morning's wedding-day inspiration. It is one of my personal targets to visit Sweden soon - I just love the laid-back vibe that emanates from this  beautiful country. I dream of being there...

Laid back and relaxing were the buzz words for Lisa and Simon {although you'd never have guessed it looking at those images below of the couple cylcing to their hearts content!}.  The wedding took place on 13 September in the garden at Linneaträdgården in Helsingborg and was a beautiful colour-burst of  yellow, from the accessories and deocor to Simon's lovely billy button boutonniere...

"We were inspired by the bohemian greenhouse setting, which made us aim for a relaxed wedding. Of course the colour yellow was our signature colour. The dots was not intended as a theme from the beginning but when Lisa had bought her dress with the dotted tulle we just found ourselves finding more and more dotted accessories (Simons socks and handkerchief).

Even the flowers (the Billy Buttons) fit that theme..."

Don't you love that cute yellow glass pearl-bracelet? It belonged to Lisa's Grandmother, who passed away when she was seven years old...

"Linda is a dear friend of mine who no longer works as a florist but did an amazing job with our flowers. The only flower I knew I wanted was “the yellow balls” also known as Craspedia Globosa or Billy Buttons. We wanted that bohemian feel to to our wedding day styling..."

 

"The phrase “Du & Jag” means You and Me in Swedish and it’s a phrase that has been following us around for a long time. We decided to engrave “Du & Jag” in our engagement-rings. So when it came to customize the Converse’s we knew instantly what the heelstripe should say!

We met in school at age 15 and some months later we became a couple. Simon proposed to Lisa at home by the kitchen table by going down on one knee. We got married two years later."

"I knew from the beginning that I wanted a short wedding dress with tulle and a 50’s style to it, but still modern. I loved how easy my Tekla dress was to dance in, jump around and just be myself in my dress! I never felt uncomfortable, just pretty..."

Vintage 78 Gramophone DJs and Champagne Served From A Caravan ~ A Relaxed Vintage Inspired Marquee Wedding...

Morning lovers :)  Well I have the joy of trying to get through to the tax office today - wish me luck!!! All I'm saying is thank goodness they have extended the deadline to 2nd Feb.  Anyway, ramblings over, let's look at the first real wedding I've got ready to feature this week - this time a darling little 'afternoon tea', English chintz style affair, where champagne was served from a caravan whilst the gramophone DJ's served up some vintage style entertainment for the newlyweds and guests at this lovely summertime marquee wedding.

Meet Andy and Claire, who tied the knot on 20th August last year with a ceremony at St Mary's Church in Ullenhall (near Henley in Arden in Warwickshire), followed by a marquee reception held in Claire's parents garden {how lucky!}. 

Claire told me that right from the off, they knew what kind of wedding they wanted to have, and that meant steering away from anything too formal...

"I have a real love of vintage fashion (as I'm naturally curvy so it suits me better!) and I love the 1940s and '50s.  I go to the Goodwood Revival every year with work and always come back even more inspired.

We definitely weren't purists in terms of choosing an 'era' and just used the 'vintage' theme loosely.  The family wedding photos (our grandparent's in wartime, and our parents in the early 1960s) were a real source of inspiration to us actually, and finished it all off beautifully..."

"The bridesmaids' dresses proved far, far trickier than my own wedding dress!  I knew that I wanted something vintage-looking, but just never saw anything in the shops that grabbed me and hated the idea of one of the guests turning up in the same dress if I bought something from the usual suspects on the high street. 

A year or so ago I'd had a beautiful vintage brocade dress made by Dig For Victory (who I'd stumbled across online), and so I contacted Eleanor to see what she might be able to do.  She made me two gorgeous prom dresses from a mauve vintage taffeta and a rose brocade which my 2 beautiful bridesmaids wore with net petticoats underneath (which they weren't so keen on at first, but I had to wrestle them out of at the end of the night!)..."

"I knew that I wanted to go for an afternoon tea rather than a formal three course meal, and that I wanted to find some mis-matched crockery to give it a quirky vintage feel.  Whilst we were at the Designer Vintage Bridal Show,  we met Cheryl from Vintage Glamour Days and she was absolutely fabulous! 

Not only did she provide all of the crockery, vintage lace overlays for the tables, vintage champagne coupes and all of the gorgeous cake stands, but she also brought Audrey with her, a little pea-green vintage caravan which she served the champagne from when everyone arrived..."

"I met Karen and Gemma from Passion for Flowers again at the Designer Vintage Bridal Show in Birmingham and fell in love with the vintage-coloured roses they had on display in a candelabra.  We were finding that, despite not having a set colour theme for the day, things were naturally veering towards soft pinks, blues and greens and it all suddenly seemed to come together.

We decided on a mix of peppermint, sweet avalanche, ocean song, amnesia and vintage cream spray roses with delft blue hydrangea, blue agapanthus with eucalyptus parvi and garden herbs..."

"My sister in law (who is an absolute miracle with anything creative) made metres and metres of bunting for us which was strung up everywhere, so that added to the relaxed, vintage theme...."

Guests were entertained by the wonderful gramophone playing DJs, 'It's A Windup!'...

"My bouquet carried the hydrangeas and roses too, and the local village florist, Judy, matched the reception flowers perfectly and put the most beautiful floral arch outside the church for us as well as some flowers on all of the windowsills.

Passion for Flowers also did us some fresh rose petals for the confetti, which was put in a basket in the porch of the church for everyone to grab a handful."

"Andy's much more creative then me and made the table plan by finding some beautiful vintage adverts which he then photoshopped to include the guests' names. We then put the original advert on the tables and it was a real talking point.  He also made a fabulous bar menu in the same way.

We weren’t sure what the weather was going to be like on the day, so we hedged our bets and put out a basket of umbrellas and a basket of flip flops (mainly for the dancefloor in case of sore feet from high heels all day).

I ought to also say a word about our invitations and orders of service, which were done beautifully by Bianca at Two For Joy Paper who I stumbled across on Folksy.  They were one of the first things that we got fixed in terms of the details and they set the tone for the rest of the planning as she has some lovely vintage options.  She was absolutely lovely to deal with (and a lot less expensive than some of the other options that I’d seen along the way)"

"I started off by being certain that I didn't want to have a 'corporate' feeling wedding.  It's what I do every day (with MUCH bigger budgets) and I really wanted to get away from a very formal, precise, match-the-cravats-to-the-cake-to-the-chair-sashes type of wedding.  Not that there's anything remotely wrong with that, it's just that I do 'formal' every day, and also it wouldn't have felt right for us – the one thing that a lot of the guests said after the wedding was that it was all very "us" and that makes me happy...."

A Pretty Pastel Colour Vintage Inspired Wedding in Wales...

Happy lunch time folks ;) Did you see 'One Born Every Minute' last night? What wonderfully heart-warming stuff, I am still smiling about it today - best episode ever.  And congratulations are in order today too for Lucy Ledger who gave birth to a little baby boy yesterday! Well done Lucy! I'm looking forward to hearing more about your gorgeous new bundle of love.
