It’s a Wind Up! Vintage 78 Gramophone DJ…

Whilst we're about everything that is glamorous and gorgeous over here at the Love My Dress Wedding Blog, we also love to celebrate all that is vintage.  We regularly feature the most gorgeous vintage inspired weddings, bridal wear, wedding jewellery and even vintage style photography, but over the next week or so, we'll be featuring details of some of the most fabulous vintage style wedding and event entertainers, starting today, with It's a Wind Up!

It's a Wind Up! are gramophone enthusiasts Matt and Annabel, who specialise in playing original 78rpm shellac discs on 1930’s Gramophone players to live audiences of all kinds…

"We started collecting these fantastic old discs and players some time ago and it became our passion to play them and to introduce them to live audiences all over the UK.  We come with picnic style gramophones with the pop up lids which we wind up to play.

Combining our passions for music and fashion, we select music form our vast collection (now over 10000) and cater for all kinds of events form garden parties and birthdays to weddings and corporate do’s. We have a collection of picnic style HMV 102 gramophones which wind up to play our records.  All our records are old shellac 78rpm discs and the music ranges from the 1900s all the way through to the late 50’s and includes 20’s “Speakeasy” 30’s Swing 40’s Big Band 50’s Crooners and Rock n’ Roll plus Lindy hop, Jive, Blues and much more!"

Saxophonist Matt is also a music promoter and founder of Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club in Manchester, the Manchester Jazz festival and Iroko records. After 10 years, Matt has left the club scene and is back playing his sax and spinning shellac on the gramophones. Matt brings with him a vast knowledge of Jazz, Swing and Blues.  High flyer Annabel is Head of Research and Graduate Education at the University of Huddersfield and brings with her a love of all things vintage. Annabel has a large collection of 50’s dresses and accessories but is no slouch when it comes to knowledge of the music! …

Matt told me, "The reaction to the shows has been fantastic from people who remember them first time around to a whole new audience who can’t believe that it’s a purely mechanical process and are amazed by the sound quality we obtain.  Annabel has a natural gift as a DJ for great song selection.."
