A Royal Wedding Inspired 1950s Street Party…

I'm a Royal Wedding Fan and I don't care. I can't wait to dress up and celebrate on 29 April 2011 as our future King ties the knot and I intend on doing it in style!  Welllll, what the heck! It's a fabulous excuse to party with the whole COUNTRY as far as I'm concerned!  And what better way to do that, than via a street party! I love the idea of the party spilling out onto the street; all afternoon tea, jam and scones, pretty bunting and china cups 🙂

This latest photoshoot – a 'Royal Wedding Street Party', which took place in the lovely cobbled alleyways of the city of York, gives a great example of how it could be done and photoshoot stylist Katie Pask of Hello Vintage tells us more…

"What with the Royal Wedding just around the corner, it felt like a timely idea to reinvent the street party – keeping all the quintessentially English features, such as tea and cake, but bringing it bang up to date with some tongue in cheek poses and a modern take on the details.

Obviously I have all you could possibly want for a stylish tea party, but I knew it would be the details that would spark off ideas in people’s imaginations and I knew exactly who to go to first.  I asked Cat Hepple, amazing editorial photographer, if she fancied getting involved and to my delight she agreed.  I then set about contacting other suppliers I knew would come up with some creative ideas and we all set to work.

The whole point of street parties is to just have a great time and I guess that’s the inspiration that I’d like brides to take away from Cat’s amazing images – yes, it’s haphazard – but it’s unique and individual.  No, you can’t guarantee that British weather will be on your side, but who cares – it’s about you and all the people in your life spending time together and celebrating love so you absolutely don’t need a budget-breaking venue to make your special day special.  Maybe, just maybe, your perfect venue is right on your doorstep.

"We decided to focus on the 1950s for style; street parties were all the rage for the Queen’s coronation and to me, the decade evokes great fun – all those big skirts and red lips after all that austerity – mirroring today’s belt-tightening in fact!

Claire Weir at Just Darling Cakes spent lots of time researching cakes of the time and created a delicate and beautiful cake, paring it down to tie-in with contemporary style.

Sarah Richardson at Leafy Couture came up with the brilliant idea of using her collection of royal family tins to create stylish and unique table centrepieces – for the shoot I raised them up on vintage books to give height to the table – a simple but effective tip for Brides…"

"Our models received the '50s treatment from make up artist Leeanne Bennett of Lab Makeup Artist, who gave the girls super glam red lips and long, long lashes – which look amazing in photographs – and original '50s dresses from The Vintage Emporium by Discover Vintage in the heart of York – a treasure trove of vintage wedding dresses, gloves, hats and veils and amazing prom style dresses, such as the red, strapless Frank Usher gown our bridesmaid wore for the shoot.

I met Natalie Ramsell of  I Am Nat at a networking event recently and was blown away by her stationery – so I couldn’t resist asking her to come up with a contemporary take on the Union Jack for our street party – and she certainly didn’t disappoint!  The colours are so rich, and the bunting invitation is a great idea – I can imagine delighted guests hanging them up at home and smiling every time they looked at them!"

"Finally, what street party would be complete without the obligatory bunting?  I contacted Bunting Queen who kindly sent us oodles of her stylish flags which fluttered so prettily against the old brick walls.

My brief to the models was to have fun!  They were friends before the shoot and I think you can really see the chemisty between our gorgeous trio.

PS:  Yes, our ‘bride and groom’ really are called Will and Katie!! {see credits at end!}"
