A Canadian/English Vintage Style Wedding in Cornwall…

Once again I've the pleasure of featuring a relatively new Photographer – and one who is certainly new to Love My Dress 🙂 Her name is Eddie Judd and a couple of weeks ago, Eddie sent me a lovely set of snaps from a wedding she photographed in Cornwall.

This is the wedding of Melissa and Michael who tied the knot on 23rd, 24th and 25th April 2010 – that's one lovely long wedding celebration!  Bride Melissa told me "We found Treworgey Farm, located in Duloe, Cornwall through Michael's Mother who stayed there several times with Michael's step father when they lived in the UK. Michael and I had holidayed there a couple of times and on our last visit thought it would be the perfect place for our Wedding as not only is it set in stunning Cornish countryside and would have accommodation for guests to stay, but it is also a stones throw away from Looe, Cornwall where I spent all of my childhood holidays and most importantly it was a place where Michael's step father had loved who sadly passed away a couple of years before…."

I do adore Melissa's bouquet "…whilst many brides favour
tall, decadent  flower displays I wanted something that had a little
more rustic charm with some added quirkiness…"

"Michael is Canadian and therefore had family travelling over so we decided to make it a weekend of celebrations, guests arrived at Treworgey Farm on the Friday giving them time to settle in before our joint Stag and Hen celebrations on the Saturday and  our Wedding ceremony and breakfast on the Sunday."

Melissa's designed her pretty wedding dress, with it's hints of vintage lace, herself…

"I really did not enjoy trawling the bridal shops partly because most stocked dresses were in a size 12 so I could barely get my leg in them!  But I also found it impersonal and the assistants pushing for a sale.  With four months to go and still no dress, I found a brilliant dressmaker who combined all the elements I liked in to one dress.  Having the dressed made and going for regular fittings really added to the excitement and anticipation of the Wedding and actually did not cost anymore then buying one from the rails.  I sourced the fabric from Joel and Sons Fabric in London which is an Aladdin's cave of beautiful couture fabrics and should be anyones first port of call when looking for dress fabric. The staff are so helpful and it was here I found a gorgeous lace embroidered with small pearls that my dressmaker stitched to the top of my bodice and made a Bolero from."

Flowers in her hair & Bambi Lashes…

"I wanted to wear flowers in my hair but knew real ones would wilt
before the day was over, I purchased some freeze dried Roses and Peonies
but they just kept falling apart so I managed to source some faux cream
Rose buds which looked really lifelike.  I was very spoilt and my beloved husband bought me
some diamond earrings!

A month before my wedding I had a make up consultation session
with a Bobbi Brown consultant.  However, the best invention is false
eyelashes that I had put on a week prior to the wedding, amazing and no
need for mascara.  Bambi move aside!"

Vintage Silk…

"I fell in love with a beautiful vintage green/turquoise silk
; the younger bridesmaids wore a design akin to a 1950's prom dress and
my Maid of Honour wore a long dress with a ruched bodice.  We used the
same Ivory silk as my Wedding dress for my Flower girl with the
green/turquoise sash colour of the bridesmaids and Maid of Honour.  Each
girl had a cream stole and the Bridesmaids sourced their own simple cream satin shoes.   As a gift I bought my Maid of Honour and two Bridesmaids
Canadian Pearl earrings."

The Groom…

I love how Melissa and Michael wove the pretty vintage silk turquoise blue throughout their wedding day. Michael wore a Wedgewood suit, from the Peter Posh collection; a classic
navy tail coat with navy striped trousers and cream waistcoat. "It was sourced
through a very traditional and charming menswear shop in Tavistock called Farley Menswear,
owned by a wonderful lady called Judith…

Michael also wore a navy blue top hat  and we had
cravats and hankies made for Michael his best men and ushers from the
same material as the bridesmaids dresses…"

Hello Hughy!

"The Church we chose to get
married in was a little distance from the farm, so I hired a 1956 bus
called Hughy which the guests loved and my best friend provided a
portable CD and compiled a CD with themed Wedding songs such as Abba 'I
Do, I Do, I Do', and 'Get Me to The Church on Time!' Hired from www.kingharryscornwall.co.uk"

Vintage VA-Va-Voom!

"When I was a child my Mum had a Morris Minor Convertible which
everyone loved, and I managed to source one in Cornwall for the Wedding
and as an addition and because Michael loves cars I  surprised him by
hiring a 1966 Aston Martin DB 6, hired from
www.cornwallclassiccarhire.co.uk"

Wedding Day Inspiration and Decor…

"Wooden crates of apples and bales of straw for our Stag and Hen
party, decorative vintage tins to hold the flowers, faux butterflies
adorned the flowers and the odd white dove!  Dolly pegs to secure the
menus in place and also the guest used them to help keep their napkins
in place, Fortnum and Mason chocolate champagne truffles as favours
(these were the chocolates Michael bought me on our first Valentines).  Not On The High Street and Cox & Cox are two very good websites when it comes to decor.

I understand why people choose a theme  but at the same time it can
completely change the direction of styling a Wedding making it less
personal and more about the theme i.e. choosing a certain type of flower
because it fits with the colour scheme.  That said there are so many
options available that choosing a theme can focus you.  We chose a
hotchpotch of different items which when brought together
unintentionally lent towards a Vintage feel."

"We had a lounge area in the marquee with Cream sofas
and coffee tables which I loved because it meant guests could chill out
or have a conversation without shouting over the music!  Heart Maps instead of table numbers, each map was from a country Michael and I had visited together."

Butterflies and Bumble Bees…

"As it was a Spring wedding we wanted a cake that reflected the season
so we asked the cake maker to hand decorate the cake with different
insects- butterflies, dragon flies, bumble bees and lady birds…"

Anytime, Anywhere…

"Michael is a Chef, so as you can
imagine food was a significant part of the Wedding!  Together Michael
and I worked on a menu and then Michael wrote all the recipes, we were
very fortunate to find a Caterer willing to replicate them.  Local,
seasonal food was a must.
Our caterers aptly named 'Anytime, Anywhere' did a fantastic job…"

Entertainment, the Elvis Way!…

"Entertainment was a really important part of our
celebrations particularly as we had our Joint Stag and Hen party the day
before.  On the Saturday we arranged for a guided tour by Canadian
Canoe along the River Tamar and in the evening we had a fancy dress
themed party; 'British and Canadian icons throughout history' where we
had a quiz, hog roast and local cider and The Wurzels – (I've got a
brand new Combine Harvester) who were FANTASTIC and appealed to all
ages!

On the Wedding day we booked 'The Polperro Fishermen's
choir for our Church ceremony and then had a Swing Band at the reception
and as a complete surprise, an Elvis impersonator which brought a little
Vegas to our elegant English wedding…."

Words of Wisdom…

"It
is so important to consider the guest experience when you are
planning as whilst the day is about you if the guests are well looked
after, entertained and enjoying themselves it lends itself to a much
better atmosphere.

Make it personal, everything we chose had a reason
behind  it from the food and drink we served to the location and
entertainment.

The Volcano erupted in Iceland during the week
leading  to our Wedding, shutting down all UK airports, this was
incredibly stressful given that the groom, his family and my best friend
were all coming from abroad.  Michael  managed to get back literally by
plane, train and automobile and amazingly, the first plane to arrive in
UK since the shut down was from Canada with Michael's family on!  This
certainly put everything in perspective, keep at the front of your mind
why you are doing it as at the end of the day it is not about the dress
and the party they are just added benefits!

It was without exception the best weekend in our lives and worth all
the time, effort and stress that goes in to planning a Wedding!"
