Red Roses and Louis Mariette ~ Glamour at the Glasgow Art Club…

Morning all! Let's get right down to it today, I have lots to blog this week and due to my epic adventures in London last week I'm a teensy bit behind schedule, so I shall waste no further time introducing you to this absolutely gorgeous wedding that took place at the The Glasgow Art Club on 26 November last year, and was photographed by the wonderful Lillian & Leonard.  I have to say, I adore this venue, and the lighting at that time of year has resulted in some wonderfully dramatic images.

I was completely delighted to discover that Amy discovered her headpiece designer, Louis Mariette, via this feature on Love My Dress

"Love My Dress was a great source of ideas in the run up to my weding, and it was nice to read real accounts of wedding planning too!  I actually wore a headpiece called 'Bird of Paradise' by Louis Mariette, which I found via Love My Dress, and which remains one of my absolute favourite wedding purchases.  I got this from Melle Cloche along with my veil…"

"Our table plan was made of escort cards strung in rows over a big frame with loads of photos of the two of us with friends and family.  That worked really well and meant there was a display later where guests could go and spot themselves in the pictures.

My florist was Sophie from I Heart Flowers who I found through the Lillian & Leonard blog.  Sophie is great and came to me with loads of ideas when all I had managed to come up with was ‘red’.   My bouquet was tied with a deep red velvet ribbon and the bridesmaids had black velvet – really beautiful…"

"Because the Art Club is a working gallery most of the decor was already done for us which was fantastic!  We have a couple of prints we love that we displayed on the day.  One was ‘This is where the magic happens’ and was outside the ceremony room, the other was ‘time to drink champagne and dance on tables’ which we displayed with our cake.  We had black table cloths and gold candelabras for the meal and it worked really well in the gallery room.  Appropriately dramatic for a winter wedding I thought…."

"We got the bridesmaid dresses from Kaliko.  I never had it on my list of shops to look in but I saw the dresses in the window when I was passing and managed to get all the sizes online.  They were black, v-neck and knee length with a silk band round the bottom.  We had them customised with the same silk band running down the back…"

"The girls all felt and looked great – I was so pleased.I wanted red accessories for the girls and actually really struggled to find the right shade.  Good old Debenhams saved the day though when I found beautiful  hair slides in the perfect colour of red.  The bridesmaids wore them to clip their hair up at one side and it looked lovely."

"We had the whole day in The Glasgow Art Club, Glasgow.  We absolutely loved the venue the minute we walked in.  It’s got a really great atmosphere, very cosy.  The drawing room at the front where we had our ceremony is a gorgeous forest green colour which we loved.  The gallery, where we had our meal and reception, is really impressive but not too grand.  We wanted an almost ‘house party’ vibe and felt like the Art Club layout really worked for this…"

"Because it was a November wedding we always wanted loads of candlelight so we had candelabra centrepieces and then candle bags with love-hearts cut out for the evening celebrations – This made everything feel really warm and cosy…"

"We had The Glenlivet whiskey for the men and Absolute vodka for the ladies – all sourced via friends that work for Pernod-Ricard (handy).  For the place settings we tied three mini Green&Blacks chocolate bars together with ribbon and attached a name card.  We got the mini bars from Tesco and had a really good girly night with the bridesmaids and some family making them all up…"

"We couldn’t decide on a cake at all and went to Waitrose 4 weeks before the wedding in a bit of a panic.  There was a lovely selection of cakes and the lady helping us really knew her stuff.  We went for a sponge cake with ivory icing which I thought might be too plain but I absolutely loved it.  We had two metallic birds as toppers which were – whisper it – Christmas decorations!  I loved the overall look and it tasted fab.  I went for a second slice and it was all away, happily…"

"The hair turned into a bit of a disaster 5 days before the wedding.  The salon I initially booked had let me down twice for the trial so I decided I couldn’t take the chance on my wedding day.  I remembered a salon I pass in Glasgow called Girlznight and miraculously they had space for 6 on the morning of the big day.  It was such a laugh when we all went.  The salon is in an old converted building with double-height ceilings and a real sense of space so it was a lovely place to spend my last un-married morning!.  I wanted a big blow-dry with soft curls and the girls got super-sleek straight blow-drys – I was really impressed with the stylists…"

"My dress was Nell by Victoria Jane.  I love that my new surname is Nelson and the dress was called Nell.  I actually didn’t think too much of the dress on the hanger but something about the fabric made me try it on.  It is a gorgeous slipper satin halterneck dress and even though I’d been working all day when I put it on I felt like I was at the Oscars.  It was such a great dress to wear, never getting in my way or feeling restrictive…"

"My dad gave me away – wearing a tartan tie as my mum doesn’t think he suits a kilt!  We all walked down to ‘Glasgow Love Theme’ by Craig Armstrong which featured in Love Actually (a favourite of ours).  It’s a gorgeous tune…"

"Mark wore a gorgeous red tartan kilt.  He absolutely loves wearing a kilt and any excuse is good enough for him so he always wanted one for his wedding day…."

"The make-up (all 6 of us!) was done by my super-talented sister Katy who qualified as a make-up artist last year.  I knew I wanted a red lip the minute I’d bought my dress as I felt very ‘Hollywood’ in it!.  The bridesmaids had a nude lip and smoky eye combo – a personal favourite and they all really suited it.  Katy worked so hard and pulled it off brilliantly…"

"During the meal we had Jan Straczynski play guitar – he was really fabulous, it was lovely hearing the mix of Spanish and classical music during the wedding breakfast and I thought the guitar just really went well with the tone of the day.

For the evening reception we had a band called Deville.  I know that sometimes wedding bands can be hit or miss but the guys were great and the dance floor was full all night – people didn’t want them to leave!"

"We chose Dean Martin ‘You’re Nobody Til Somebody Loves You’ to dance to, firstly because we adore it but also because it has a good beat and is quite short so it gave us a fighting chance!"

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

"I took the week of work before the wedding and I needed every minute of it.  We had all the orders of ceremony to do and the table plan.  It doesn’t sound too much but when you’re dropping things off at the venue and dealing with last minute arrangements it all adds up so try and plan to have time off.  It’s also a good idea to set aside one of the nights before the wedding for just the two of you to do whatever you love – we got take-away food!

Definitely double check all suppliers the week before – it will give you peace of mind and help you relax a bit."

Huge congratulations to you Amy and Mark, I'm so pleased that Love My Dress inspired you so much in your wedding planning adventures :)  Thanks as always too to Scottish wedding photographers Lillian & Leonard

"Oh our photographers – the best wedding decision we made!  We went with Lillian & Leonard and we both feel so lucky to have had them.  Cara and Nye are just lovely people and everything felt so easy with them.  When we got the preview of the photos back we were delighted and couldn’t wait for the rest.  We weren’t disappointed, every single one is just perfect.  When we initially started to research photographers Lillian & Leonard stood out straight away – they were the only ones we contacted and I am so pleased they were free on our date…"

Is anyone else planing on wearing a headpiece similar to Amy's? What about plans for a weding at The Glasgow Art Club?

Back later all, big love for now 🙂
