A Glamorous Golden Age of Cinema, Sci-Fi & 1950’s B-Movie Inspired Wedding!

It's Friday, and, IT'S MY BIRTHDAY (sorry, but I am totally in the mood for celebration today as privately I'm marking something else that's worth a glass of pop or two and I am soooooo relieved!!). Anyway, enough of me, let's get down to bridal business.

This here is Rik and Julie, and they tied the knot on 31st March this year, at St Mary’s Church in Walthamstow, followed by a reception at the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green.

This wedding is like nothing I've ever featured before in a sense; (A
Dr Who and Sci-Fi obsessed couple who feature in their own wedding day,
1950s inspired B-movie….?!?) …and yet in another sense, it's so
very 'Love My Dress'; a 1930's
inspired wedding dress, a beautiful pair of shoes, a cute little pair
of vintage inspired bridal gloves and a Marilyn look-a-like? This
wedding is glamorous and elegant and zany and immensely fun all-rolled
in to one, and it was sent in by the lovely Julia Boggio and amazingly talented bridal wear designer, Sally Lacock.

"We tried to incorporate things we both loved into the day.  We
both are quite geeky and love sci-fi, particularly B Movies from the 1930's
– 1950's.  We love the combination of the golden age of cinema glamour
with the cheesy props and rubbish effects.  Rik is also a massive Stars
Wars fan and I love Doctor Who!"

Jule's dress was the absolutely divine 'Elsa' creation by designer Sally Lacock – who I'm a huge, huge fan of.  The Elsa
wedding dress is an elegant 1930s style French Chantilly lace dress
which fits over the bust and is cut to flare gently from the waist with
more fullness at the back – a design feature that flattered Julie so
very well on her wedding day.  The whole gown is adorned with silk and
lace flowers (the colour is taupe, by the way)…

"I wear quite a lot of vintage and vintage style dresses and I was looking for a 1930's
style dress but couldn’t quite find the right one.  When I tried on my
dress, with my Mum, I knew it was right as I loved the lace and the cut
and the beautiful detailing.
Sally was an amazing person to work with and took lots of time to make sure the dress fitted perfectly.

It looked absolutely incredible on the day and I felt like a movie star!"

Did I mention this couple actually appeared in their own B-movie 'Bride of the Atom' on their wedding day? Skip to the end of this feature to see it 🙂

"I cannot recommend our photographer, Julia Boggio
enough.  She and her team were incredible on the day, managing to
capture every moment and detail without being obtrusive.  The photos and
wedding album are out of this world!"

"We met when Rik was sharing a flat with one of my friends from
University.  We decided to get married after being together for six
years as we both felt that it was the right time.  We were engaged for
just over a year before our wedding…"

"The readings we chose or our ceremony included 'To His Coy Mistress', by Andrew Marvell, the Song of Songs, Chapter Two, and John Chapter Two, verses 1-12.

Rik has a MPhil is ancient Sumerian languages and the Song of
Songs is derived from Sumerian poetry so this seemed very appropriate.
To his coy mistress” is one of Jules’s favourite poems, as it is full of seize the day optimism."

"We had been to Viajante restaurant at the Town Hall Hotel a few times and absolutely loved the food there.
When we were looking for a reception venue, we wanted somewhere in east
London as we knew that we wanted to get married and celebrate somewhere
local to where we live and somewhere to which we felt connected.

We loved the Art Deco interiors of the Town Hall Hotel but also loved the quirky modern art in the building (such as the moose head rug).

The staff at the hotel were amazing and we had such a fantastic day!"

"As favours, we gave out
Stormtrooper key rings!  We also gave out goodie bags to eat / drink on
the routemaster bus containing a mini bottle of champagne, Space Invader
crisps and Jelly Babies (spot the very geeky doctor who reference!!!).  We
made candles in the shape of rockets and spaceships and we displayed
posters of the artwork from the invitations around the venue.
  For
table markers, we used postcards of vintage sci-fi pulp fiction, with
names such as “Behind the Flying Saucers” and “Donovan’s Brain".
The flowers were single lilies in test tubes as I thought these looked quite space age!

Neither Rik nor I like really like cake, so we were intrigued to discover that The Ginger Pig, (a really excellent London butchers), produce wedding pork pies.  The pies were amazing and a nod to Jules’s Northern roots!
We also had a cheese cake from Neal’s Yard Dairy, one of our favourite shops at Borough Market (we both absolutely love cheese).

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

"Work out a budget and then double it!  And build in plenty of contingency into the timetable!

I enjoyed the entire day – we had a fantastic time!  If I had to
choose one part, I think it would be when I arrived at the Church; the
planning was all over, and I now I just needed to enjoy myself!"

To entertain all their guests, Rick and Jules showcased a film,
'The Bride And The Atom'.  The two central characters were themselves!
Hehehe!

"The film was a product of a somewhat drunken evening
with our friend, Mark Corden, who works as a film and TV director.  We
had talked about having an old-school Sci-Fi slant to the day and we all
thought:  let’s make a B Movie!

We filmed over 3
weekends in London and Birmingham.  We deliberately wanted the film to
have slightly dodgy effects with an ‘Ed Wood’ feel and decide to produce
the film as a silent movie in Black and White in order to try to cover
up our rubbish acting!  All our friends played the different parts and
helped out with locations, especially our friend Dan who let us
wallpaper his bedroom to look like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise
(as well as playing the evil villain in the film)!
"

And now for the film – if you have a spare 20 minutes, and you happen to be into whacky B-Movies, you might want to take a peep 😉 Hehehe! I present to you (imagine the Pearl & Dean opening score), 'Bride of The Atom'

Who'd have thunk it? A true 'cinematic' wedding if ever there was one (and you can see more of those here!). Oh Rik and Julie,  huge congrats to you you crazy pair 😉 I absolutely adore you whole wedding day look Jules, you look incredible, your dress is divine! {not, fellow appreciators of Julie's gown, you need to check out designer Sally Lacock!}.

Let's show Rik and Jules some love for allowing us to peak inside their very unique, fun and completely glamorous wedding day 🙂

I'll hopefully be lounging in my bed with a big birthday breakfast by the time you are reading this 😉

Much love all for now,

Annabel
