Before we start today’s feature, I just want to say that I hope you’re not in a hurry because, if you’re anything like me, the subject of this post is very likely to induce a state of blissful reverie. You might wonder why I’m so sure that indulgent daydreams await but really, when we’re talking about having your wedding gown designed and made just for you, how could you not drift off for a few moments? So, before you indulge your imagination, let me introduce Catharina and My Eden…
“Getting married and making my own wedding dress in 2010 sparked an idea, I’m very particular with what I like and would rather have nothing than something that isn’t perfect so with my contacts and experience I’d gained from my fashion label, I began creating my own dream dress and that’s how it started.”
Now, Catharina’s bespoke dressmaking atelier, My Eden, is nestled in a creative design space in South Wimbledon, just thirty minutes from central London. All of her dresses are designed, created and sold on a purely bespoke basis directly from her studio. There is no ‘off the peg’ and no ‘ready to wear’, just unique gowns that are as individual as the women who wear them.
“When I am creating a wedding dress, it’s always the bride who is the inspiration,” says Catharina. “I look at how she dresses, we discuss ideas and look at moodboards but most of all I listen. I soak up everything! Each dress is a mirror image of each bride’s wishes and no two are ever the same.”
Catharina lists her design inspirations as the late Oscar De La Renta and Cristobel Balenciaga as well as modern muses such as Mira Zwillinger, Inbal Dror and the incomparable Elie Saab. She’s also hugely motivated by the fabrics themselves, always looking to create smooth and delicate yet organic lines.
“As each dress is bespoke, it’s hard for me to say I have a signature style per se. But many of the gowns share a certain softness, a delicate touch and a definite balance. I’m all about balance and detail. Whether it’s a couture peplum dress with cascading pearl strands or a dip-dyed silk satin gown, I always look for that perfect state where each element is in total harmony and combines beautifully.”My Eden, you’re guaranteed an experience that takes ‘personal service’ to a whole new level.
“Designing a gown is a journey, so from the word go, I want my clients to be fully at ease. We’ll have a little fun and a giggle but they always know that true professionals are making their dream dress. During the many fittings, I get to know my clients, and often their families, so it’s like seeing old friends and catching up. The process is very relaxed and very informal.”
Bespoke gowns from Catharina and My Eden start at £2500 which includes an initial design consultation, all fittings (there are usually between four and six depending on the complexity of the design), a calico fitting dress, all the silk needed and some lace trim as well as Catharina’s time and attention. A full lace dress might cost upwards of £3000 and all gowns from My Eden come with the knowledge that you’ll be getting married in something that’s truly your own.
Now, let the daydreaming begin…
