I was passed a set of lovely photographs recently by the AS lovely Photographer that is Shaneen Rosewarne Cox. Shaneen had recently completed a photoshoot for Avant-Garde Vintage – an American based Milliner who specialises in creating vintage style hats and head pieces…
"Avant-Garde Vintage was born during the planning of my own wedding back in 2008/2009. I have a basic philosophy about weddings, and it goes something like this: Weddings are a perfect opportunity to let your personalities shine. I love vintage hats, and hats in general, and I wanted something vintage-inspired for my own wedding. I just wasn't finding what I was looking for, however, and so I decided to tackle making my own 1950s-style hat.
I started out small, making some felt mini top hats for a girl's outing, but being full-timed employed in a technical sales position, I didn't really get an opportunity to branch out and really grow my business until this spring when I quit my job to be an entrepreneur. I now have an Avant-Garde Vintage Etsy Shop, that shows pricing and some of my ready-made
items. My Etsy Shop is a sampling of some of my
designs as I do prefer to do custom work. I will have new items coming
soon, and hopefully soon will be expanding my business into children's
clothing, accessories and toys through my other business, Avant-Garde
Kidlets."

"I really aim to make my pieces affordable. I
have hair flowers and bows for under $10**, and generally most of my
deluxe mini top hats are around $50. Boater's hats like the one Shaneen
used will list for around $100-$125, depending on trims and materials.
I really prefer to do custom pieces – I made a 1920s style hat for a
client for her sister's wedding. That was a challenging project, but it
was SOOO much fun! You can see the results here."
** Please note, Etsy quotes all prices in American Dollars $ – which can be easily converted into Pounds or other currencies using this online currency converter.
"I'm based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA, but I get such a kick out of thinking of my
beloved little hats going around the globe. And beloved they are – I
get rather attached to them. Everything is made by me – I make my own
buckram and wire frames, hand pick the fabrics, make or select the
trims, etc."
I love this Mad-Hatter style headpiece!
