Good morning to you, let’s kick off the week with something lovely – Samantha and Wayne’s wedding took place on 18th January 18th this year at Lumley Castle in Chester-le-Street, County Durham. The couple wanted their day to have a sense of elegant 1930s style and I think they pulled it off to perfection. I really love Samantha’s Charlotte Casadéjuss gown but it is her veil that steals the show for me.
“We decided we wanted to style our wedding along a classic 1930s aesthetic and gave ourselves a year to plan, though we pretty much planned the whole event in the first couple of months. We worked along the colours champagne and navy blue and we also took inspiration from Annabel’s book, Style Me Vintage Weddings.”

“Our wedding ceremony and reception took place at Lumley castle. We visited several venues but nothing stood out as much as Lumley Castle did. We choose The Garter suite due to style of the room, and because we didn’t think it would require much additional styling as it is already so beautiful.”
“My Wedding dress was Alisa by Charlotte Casadéjus. I had originally purchased a beautiful dress a year before the actual wedding, but as the design and feel of the day began to take shape, I started to have doubts. I already had my 1930s Juliet cap style wedding veil, and needed a dress that matched this well. I also wanted a dress with a champagne tone to it and maybe some embellishment detail.”
“I found the dress by chance on Charlotte’s website, and I noticed there was a sample for sale. After a discussion with Charlotte over the internet (she was wonderful), I bought the dress.
I fell in love with the dress from the moment I first tried it on. It perfectly matched the whole look and feel I was striving for and I loved the fit and the detail at the waist.”
“I found a vintage bag that matched the dress very closely from Bag the jewels. The gloves and garter were borrowed from my Aunt. Being January, I also knew that I would need a coat to keep me warm. I ended up finding a vintage inspired faux fur design by Quiz at Debenhams.”
“The most commented upon accessory, and the one wedding purchase that brought the whole outfit together was my veil, which I discovered during a visit to a small bridal shop in Yarm, North Yorkshire. It was in a window display – I saw it and knew it was exactly what I had been looking for. I asked if it was available in a warm champagne/pale gold colour and it was made for me by Richard Designs in the colours I requested.
I had my hair styled on a look I had seen in the Style Me Vintage Weddings by Wayne at Innovations.”
“The bridesmaid dresses were a 1930s dress pattern that I found on the internet. I took the pattern to SNS Bridal House on Stockton high Street. I didn’t see the finished designs until about a week before the wedding. I found the girls’ shoes at Jenny Packham at Debenhams.“
“The flowers were provided by Karen at Butterflies Florist in Middlesbrough. We did seek quotes from a number of other florists but this supplier stood out. Their flowers are beautiful and they don’t over-charge. I took my ideas to the florist, knowing I only wanted white, champagne and blue flowers. We substituted the expensive flowers for flowers more readily available at the time of year. I also knew I wanted herbs to add texture and aroma to the bouquet, as we are both keen cooks.”
“As favours, we provided each guests with a champagne flute with flashes of navy running through it, for something different and to match the theme and colours of the day.”
“My flowergirl Olivia picked her own dress and we tied the colours to my dress with a navy sash.”
“Our photographer was Sally T – she was perfect, and recommended to us by Karen at butterflies. The photography was the one thing I was worried about because I really dislike having my photo taken, but Sally put us both at ease.'”
“We hired a pianist called Stuart Collingwood via Function Central to play during the ceremony.
Wayne is a chef so we wanted to have a little fun with the ceremony readings, which were all about cake!”
“We had two cakes – a regular wedding cake and a cheese cake. The wedding cake was made by Dec-a-cake in Stockton – the design was a twist on a cake made by Betty’s Tea Rooms in York, which we both loved! We added touches of navy to tie with colour scheme, but not be too dark. The cheesecake was supplied by Lumley Castle, we wanted this as several people including my dad do not eat cake, and to give our guests a little more choice.”
“In the evening, we had The Mustangs from Function Central, which do modern music in the style of a jazz band.
Our first dance was ‘True Love Ways’ by buddy holly. To finish we had a disco. It was just so wonderful feeling and seeing everything come together and be surrounded by all our family and friends having a good time.”
Words of Wedded Wisdom…
“Don’t let other people especially family stress you out, it’s your day.”
