Hopeless romantic that I am, I found myself feeling genuinely moved looking through the photographs of Yasmin and Maarten on their wedding day. Without knowing either of these two people, I can tell how much they love one another and their families. It’s just one of those beautiful, incredibly emotional ceremonies that reminds you what marriage is all about.

Medical registrar Yasmin married Maarten, an Accountant, on 5th August 2013. With just two months to pull the day together, it was lucky they found their perfect venue more or less straight away.

“The moment we drove through the gates of Coombe Lodge, we knew it was where we wanted to get married. The venue itself is stunning with beautiful grounds plus the venue was licenced for outdoor ceremonies – I had always wanted to get married outdoors. The staff were so helpful and the food tastings were absolutely delicious. Also, Coombe Lodge is only a ten-minute drive away from Bristol airport and as most of Maarten’s friends and family were flying over from Holland, it just made perfect sense.”

“I was really clueless when it came to flowers, but Claire at The Wilde Bunch Barn was brilliant in advising me and so patient with explaining colours and themes to me. Her prices were incredibly reasonable and her service was top quality. I really couldn’t recommend her enough.

We had a three-tiered cake made by Michelle from Scrummy Mummy Cakes. The flavours were; carrot cake, orange and poppy seed, and vanilla sponge with a passion fruit icing filling. Michelle made cute little figurines of us to go on top of the cake. We decorated the cake with fresh flowers – it was delicious!”

Yasmin’s dress is the ‘Mai’ design by Augusta Jones, which she had altered by the team at LauraMay Bridal in Cardiff.

I loved the material and the flow of the dress. It just felt so right when I tried it on. My dress is actually quite different from the original which had long sleeves and a high neckline, but May from LauraMay Bridal was so helpful in showing me how I could have it altered to better suit my taste.”

Tim Bishop was not only a fantastic photographer, he was a solid support for the day to both us and our nervous families. He put us at ease with his relaxed humour, helped usher our guests around and was even our personal stylist with some sound last minute advice on my dress! And on top of that, we have the most amazing memories of our special day.

Considering Maarten and I normally hate every photo taken of us, Tim did a brilliant job in capturing all our special moments in an unobtrusive and discreet manner.”

Yasmin explains how she and Maarten met…

“Maarten and I met while we were both travelling with friends around South America in the summer of 2008. I was in the final year of my medical degree and Maarten was about to start his masters in Holland. We continued our long-distance relationship for a couple of years, then Maarten moved to the UK and the rest is history. Maarten proposed in Edinburgh whilst we were away on a long weekend over the Easter break. I was completely over the moon!

“We had already arranged to move to Australia for a couple of years with our jobs, so initially planned to get married in 2015 on our return to the UK. However, we later decided that we didn’t want to wait, so ended up organising the wedding in just two months! We moved to Australia two days after the wedding, so not only was our wedding a fantastic celebration, but an emotional goodbye to all our loved ones. Although we’re loving Oz, we’re now looking forward to returning back to the UK to be closer to our friends and family.”

How utterly flabbergasted does Yasmin’s father look when he claps his eyes on his beautiful daughter?! I absolutely adore the photos of father and daughter together.

My dad gave me away. He was actually unwell in hospital, and was only discharged the day before our wedding, so was all a bit touch-and-go regarding whether or not we’d have to postpone the wedding. I was so pleased that he was well and able to make the wedding, that all the little details seemed insignificant in comparison!”

“A close friend and very talented pianist played ‘War Song’ by Phamie Gow on the piano as I walked down the aisle. It’s a very emotional song, so there were lots of tears even before the ceremony started! As we were both quite nervous we decided to stick to traditional vows.

Maarten’s mum read ‘Blessing of the Hands’ at our ceremony. My favourite part of the poem was the last line: ‘These are the hands, even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch.’ We just thought that the reading was a beautiful representation of married life – from wedding day, to parenthood, through to the later years in life with both good and bad times along the way.”

Our florist was fantastic and so our venue was heavily styled with lots of flowers. We however went with the ‘rustic look’ and hung a few wicker hearts in the breakfast room. We also hung a few heart shaped blackboards around the venue with Dutch phrases written on.”

“Our favourite part of the day was during the evening while our band were playing ‘Hey Jude’ and all our friends and family were standing around us in a big circle whilst Maarten and I danced in the middle. Dancing with my new husband whilst seeing the genuine love in the eyes of our friends and family and their happy faces as we danced away was such a special feeling and truly the pinnacle of the day.

I also learnt some Dutch before the wedding and did a surprise speech in Dutch! It was clear to see that Maarten and his friends and family were truly touched, despite my many grammatical errors!”

Words of wedded wisdom…

“Don’t worry about it! All the small little details that you can spend hours agonising over – at the end of the day they don’t matter and nobody but you will notice.

The people really make the day. If you are strapped for cash, I would recommend cutting corners elsewhere, but making sure that all your close friends and family are there to share the day with you.”
