An ASOS Wedding Dress for a Boho Bride and her ‘Country Garden meets English Seaside’ Wedding

As we descend further into winter in the UK it’s lovely to remember what a beautiful summer we had, and on a sunny day there really is no better place to be than by the British seaside. Accounts Assistant Evie and telephone Engineer Joe got married on the 23rd August in Hastings, and certainly made the most of the sunshine, having their ceremony outside and taking their guests on a bracing walk to enjoy the sea views.

Evie and Joe were lucky enough to find their perfect venue just five minutes from their home in Hastings, a boutique hotel called The Old Rectory.

“It felt so homely and had everything we wanted.  Beautiful décor and gardens – there was somewhere for all of our guests to relax and feel comfortable as it was really important to us that everyone had a good day.”

Evie and John chose an old friend Dale Weeks to shoot their wedding, and he did them proud, capturing the fun of the day and some great shots of Hastings.

“We both loved Dale’s relaxed approach and his ability to blend into the background whilst still getting really amazing pictures.”

“I was adamant that I didn’t want a particular theme or colour to rule the day. I found myself getting annoyed when people would ask ‘what’s your colour?’.  The pale vintage colours we had just came together as we planned our wedding, nothing was too strict, but it seemed to work well together. We just wanted our choices to reflect us in a relaxed, comfortable style incorporating certain aspects that were special to us.

We bought enough glass plates and candle holders from Ikea and glued them together to make some vintage style cake stands. We also bought simple small glass tealight holders and spray painted them with a mottled antique gold effect.  I also sourced some rustic wooden log slices from a kind tree surgeon. The cake stands sat on the wood slices showcasing my ‘icecream cupcakes’ –  these were then surrounded with a few tealight holders, small vintage vases containing wild flowers provided by our florist and a few Hastings ‘stones with holes in’ – that we’d collected from the beach (a Hastings good luck charm!)”

Evie had her little boy Toby just eight weeks before the wedding, so she ending up choosing not one but two wedding dresses!

“I really didn’t want to buy a new dress and felt like all the vintage style dresses were just too pristine for me. I then came across a lady called Clare in Brighton who sold authentic vintage dresses – Songbird Vintage Wedding Dresses. I fell in love with an amazing 1950’s Parisian tulle dress and came home so happy!

When I found out that I was pregnant, I was adamant that I would still wear my dress but unfortunately I wasn’t able to due to changes with my body. In a panic only 3 weeks before our big day I was shopping online on ASOS and came across their wedding section. I saw a dress that looked nice and decided to take the chance and order it. As soon as I tried it on I loved it!”

I really love the sleeves on Evie’s dress – the whole look was finished perfectly with some simple accessories.

“I chose simple gold sling back pumps from Zara, a statement necklace from Accessorize, and then I asked my hair and make-up lady to put baby’s breath in my hair to tie in with my bouquet instead of wearing a veil.”

Penny from Blush hair and beauty helped the ladies look beautiful for the day.

“As a general rule I don’t wear much make-up but I was delighted with how flawless yet natural I looked when Penny had finished working her magic.

For my perfume I wore Jean Paul Gaultier Classique – I love the bold sweet floral scent and had bought a bottle especially to wear for the first time on our wedding day. Now every time I wear it, it brings back all the happy memories from the day.”

Joe actually met Evie online, chatting on MySpace.

“It all started with a simple hello message from Joe and after getting to know each other over a few months, we decided to meet up. It turned out that we both knew a lot of the same people and had even worked in the same place at the same time, so it was strange that we hadn’t met earlier!”

A lot of thought also went into the boys outfits, I particularly love the pattern on Joe’s shirt.

“Joe spent a long time looking for the perfect suit and finally decided on a retro style grey one. He matched this with a patterned shirt and finally a simple dark blue tie, which all the other groomsmen also wore.”

Looking for the perfect bridesmaid dress can be an exhausting experience so Evie driving her girls to a big shopping centre when she was seven months pregnant was very brave!

“After hours of shopping we stumbled across a gorgeous pale green dress from H&M. It suited them all so well and the colour wasn’t what I’d planned but it was gorgeous.”

As the sun shone Evie and John were able to get married in the beautiful gardens at The Old Rectory, with Evie’s Dad walking her down the aisle.

“I feel so privileged to have my Dad walk me down the aisle. As he lives in Switzerland I’m not able to see him that often so it was so special that he was able to share this moment with me. One last time of being his little girl!

Also, it sounds silly that I was so scared of standing up in front of all our guests during the ceremony, but as soon as I saw Joe waiting for me at the front of the aisle smiling I knew I’d be fine. Having our son Toby with us was also so special – seeing Joe waiting with him will always bring a smile to my face and I’m just so happy to finally be an official little family.”

Joe asked his Dad Chris to be his Best Man, and he wrote a poem all about Joe’s life and how him and Evie came to their wedding day – which he read during the ceremony…

‘And so to today, the Old Rectory wedding,
A very special place, a perfect setting.
If you are going to say I do, there’s nowhere better,
And we wouldn’t all be here, if Joe hadn’t met her!’

After the ceremony Evie and Joe wanted to show off their beautiful home town  and get some great photos on the beach.

“We incorporated a walk up on to the East Hill in Hastings as part of our day with our guests in the afternoon. Joe and I went off with our photographer to take some couple shots and then we met our guests at the East Hill funicular lift. It was great fun doing this, and we were able to show off the panoramic sea views of our town to our guests who had never seen it before.”

“We chose to create a buffet menu full of summery food, all based around locally sourced food such as fish from the Old Town fishmongers. Joe also chose to order a keg of beer from the Old Town brewery for our guests to enjoy some local ale. For dessert we had a vintage style ice cream cart to bring in a bit more of that seaside vibe.”

A marquee with open sides meant guests were able to enjoy the weather and beautiful gardens during the reception. The flowers provided by Katherine from Florist in the Forest complemented the English country garden perfectly.

“The main flowers I chose were roses to tie in with the English country garden feel, and baby’s breath for its delicate simplicity. Katherine got every little detail right and they couldn’t have been more perfect.”

Evie loves baking and made ice cream cone cupcakes for favours, but with a baby on the way she sought help from Dee’s Creative Cakes for the wedding cake.

“I wanted to keep the design of the cake very homemade and rustic – on the outside, our cake looked very simple, but on the inside I asked for a pink ombre effect in the sponge for a splash of colour and something a bit different.”

Having people let you down at the last minute can be very stressful, but as Evie explains sometimes things work out for the best.

“Unfortunately, two weeks before our wedding, a local band that we had booked to play cancelled on us. Luckily however the band members were able to suggest another local band called ‘SPIN’ who were able to step in and play instead. We’d never heard SPIN play before and had no idea of their style of music, but they certainly didn’t disappoint and we had a great time dancing the night away with our guests.”

Evie and Joe actually had the lyrics to their first dance engraved on their rings…

“Our first dance was “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers. We chose this song purely for the lines ‘I belong with you, you belong with me, you’re my sweetheart’, as this just sums us up as a couple.  We actually even had these words engraved onto our rings – mine says ‘I belong with you’,  and Joe’s says ‘you belong with me’.  It is the perfect reminder of our day.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“Try not to stress yourself out too much during the planning process, take your time and just remember the real reasons why you’re planning this day. There will always be things that don’t quite go to plan, but these won’t matter at all on the day. Also make sure that you choose the right photographer for you – when the day flies by and feels like a blur, you’ll treasure the pictures that bring back those lovely memories.”

These are certainly pictures to treasure, thanks very much to Dale Weeks for sharing them with us.

Congratulations Evie and Joe, leaving the house with an eight week old is impressive enough, so to look so great and pull off a brilliant wedding day is amazing.

Hastings is just down the road from me, so the next sunny day we get I’m going in search of an ice cream.

Lots of love Hannah x
