A Coral Floral Crown for an Elegant and Stylish Spanish City Wedding

After what will have been for many the first full week back at work since the festivities, we have finally reached the weekend; I can almost hear the collective sigh of relief! Time to relax, recharge and let your weary heads be lifted by today’s beautiful Spanish wedding.

Today’s newly wed couple tied the knot on the 22nd of June last year, at the boutique hotel Muga de Beloso in Pamplona, northern Spain. Renaud, an Osteopath, met Sandra, a Psychomotor Therapist, in 2002 through friends and asked her to marry him shortly after their son was born in September 2013.

“One evening, I came back from putting our little boy, Charlie, to bed and Renaud was waiting for me with a ring!”

Sandra’s elegant plaited up-do was styled by her sister. It was the perfect base for the beautiful flower crown her florist, Kimua, created for her.

My sister (who used to be a hairdresser) did an amazing job with my hair and Annie Senrens-Lay who applied my make up couldn’t have done a better job! I NEVER wear make up so she went for something really natural.”

047Sandra’s dreamy dress and that elegant cape type, lace cover-up, was hand crafted by Renaud’s aunt, Anh Lay, who clearly put a lot of thought into creating the ethereal gown.

From early on, I knew I didn’t want to spend a fortune on my wedding dress. I started looking online and visited some bridal boutiques before I realised that I would have to spend much more than I was expecting to get something that I really liked. During a family dinner I mentioned that I was struggling to find the right dress and Renaud’s aunt kindly offered to make one for me. She’s an artist who works with textiles and found the idea of making a wedding dress from scratch an exciting challenge!

Sandra and Renaud decorated their minimalist venue with splashes of colour. The couple chose a turquoise and coral palette which, I think, lends itself very well to the warm Mediterranean light.

We wanted to bring some colour to the hotel’s neutral décor. We decorated our wedding arch with coral and turquoise rope and succulent flowers. We gave our guests little ribbons to wave as we left.

Sandra asked her bridesmaids to pick their own coral coloured dress and shoes (“I love what they chose!”) and they each wore a wrist corsage matching the flowers in Sandra’s bouquet and crown.

Morgane and Jonny of M&J Photography took our wedding photos. They did a fantastic job and we couldn’t be happier! The weather kept changing but they were very helpful and flexible.”

Set amongst meadows, trees and beds of lavender it’s hard to believe that the hotel is just a twenty minute stroll away from Pamplona’s bustling centre, a city famous for its San Fermin festival.

With its mountain views, minimalist architecture and relaxed atmosphere it’s easy to see why Sandra and Renaud fell in love with Muga de Beloso.

We chose the hotel because we have spent a lot of time there with our families and it really started to feel like home. Plus, the staff are very friendly; they basically allowed us to do whatever we wanted, which is pretty unusual for a hotel wedding! “

I am a big fan of the floral arrangements; the vivid colours, glittery vases and succulent plants in mossy pots are modern, stylish and fun too!

Laetitia from Kimua arranged our flowers. I wanted something really simple and chic. My only request was that we had succulent flowers. Laetitia chose the flowers around this basic idea.

Sandra accessorised with a wild pearl pendant (“I wanted something simple as the dress already had a lot of detail”) and Salvatore Ferragamo mules. She wore her usual scent by Chloé.

Renaud looked dapper in a Paul Smith suit, DSquared² shirt and tan brogues by Carmina. The groom and groomsmen each wore a bow tie from Mrs Bow Tie.

Sandra walked up the aisle accompanied her father, to the sounds of ‘Marry You’ by Bruno Mars. The ceremony itself was led by Renaud’s uncle, who performed the role with style (in shorts and a giraffe print tie, no less!).

Renaud’s uncle did an amazing job. He has a talent for both communicating in a spiritual way and connecting with people on a very human level. Plus he is very funny!”

Sandra and Renaud wrote their vows to each other in secret, with emotional results:

It was amazing and really emotional to hear and read our vows to each other during the ceremony. We both tried to avoid clichés or anything religious and instead write words which were very personal to us.

I loved every single second of our wedding day, but the most emotional bit for me was when Renaud read his vows – I burst into tears!

During the ceremony the couple had three songs; ‘As’ by George Michael, ‘Les Gentils, Les Mechants’ by Michel Fugain and ‘I’m Walking on Sunshine’ by Katrina and the Waves.

We helped break up the talking with songs and everyone joined in singing and clapping, making for a great atmosphere.

To close the ceremony Sandra and Renaud arranged for at troupe of traditional Basque dancers to perform.

Instead of a sit down meal the couple opted for a cocktail reception with a steady stream of culinary delights, catered by the venue. The food (which looks so good it’s making me want to break my New Year’s resolutions!) was inspired by local Basque cuisine:

We wanted everyone to be awake for the dancefloor so we avoided a sit down dinner and had a really long cocktail reception instead! The staff didn’t stop serving food and drinks for a second. We had lots of small dishes or ‘pintxos’ as they are known in the Basque country; miniature paellas, fish kebabs, chistorra sausages (the best!) foie gras lollipops and prawn tempura, followed by sweet canapés and much, much more. Everything was inspired by the local Basque food we love. For drinks we had Champagne, incredible wine from the local Navarre region and the best Mojitos we’d ever drunk!

For our favours we supplied our guests with little bottles of local olive oil from Mendía (Arroniz) and little bags of local salt from Añana.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

Stay relaxed, ask people around you for help and don’t lose yourself. If you want to save money, plan in advance and make the most of the people around you.”
