A Pronovias Bride and her Midwinter Nights Dream Wedding

We all have that little something that makes us smile and feel instantly happy. Perhaps it’s being near the sea and hearing the waves crash against the shore, watching a beautiful sunrise or sunset that reminds you of a watercolour masterpiece, or laughing at a silly joke your daughter or son has just told. For me, it’s that magical, silent moment when it starts to snow. As soon as I saw these incredible images of Becca and Patrick’s Winter wedding (our second of today), I squealed in absolute delight, as it reminded me fondly of my favourite time of year in England when the air turns extra crisp and the preparations for Christmas have just begun. So, lovely readers, let’s begin the fresh new week by rewinding the clocks back just a few short months.

Becca is a retail development manager for a fine jewellery company, whilst Patrick works as a senior geo-environmental engineer. They tied the knot on Saturday 5th December 2015 at The West Mill in Derbyshire, a new and alternative wedding venue – and the bride and groom were lucky enough to be one of the first couples to marry there. These beautiful images were captured by our Little Book For Brides member Ed Godden – talking of which, are you following our brand new Instagram account over at @littlebookforbrides?

“We didn’t have a strict theme to follow but we joked that our inspiration was ‘A Midwinter Night’s Dream’. We wanted lots of foliage, woodland-inspired flower arrangements, candlelight and fairy lights. We felt that a winter wedding had the potential to be really romantic … and we were right!”

“From day one of our engagement we knew that we wanted to go with Ed from Ed Godden Photography. We had worked with him before on a business project and we regularly stalked his blog and Facebook page to gawp at his amazing photos and wedding photography.”

“We love the way Ed effortlessly captures candid and ‘real’ moments and due to his friendly and laidback nature, we felt completely at ease with him on our special day.”

“Love My Dress was definitely one of my favourite blogs and I viewed it practically on a daily basis in the run up to my wedding. I particularly liked scrolling through all the winter weddings, as this gave me inspiration for my big day. I especially liked Joe and Lauren’s wedding at The Asylum, as well as Mhairi and Ross’ wedding in Scotland. I find Love My Dress really user friendly and inspirational, with a good balance of different style weddings.”

“We met at University in 2008 through a mutual friend. Two houses and three cats later Patrick (finally!) proposed to me in London while celebrating my 27th birthday.

We got engaged in March and our wedding was in December (after seven years together we didn’t feel the need to hang around), so this led to a jam packed and exciting 9 months of planning!”

Adding a spectacular floor-length veil from Rococo Weddings, heels from Rainbow Club and borrowed earrings and rings from her mum, Becca finished off her very stylish look with hair and makeup by Cabella Boutique – a beauty boutique based in Nottingham – and a spritz of ‘Flowerbomb’ by Viktor & Rolf.

“I have worn this perfume for years and Patrick recognises this scent as ‘me’.”

Becca’s glamorous embellished and backless gown was the ‘Marisela’ style by Pronovias and was purchased at Rococo Weddings in Melbourne, Derbyshire.

“It wasn’t anything like I had imagined and I actually tried it on as a ‘wild card’ for my mum and bridesmaids to see. By chance, the design fit me like a glove and with its detailed embellishment and striking back it seemed to have the subtle wow factor I had been searching for. It was the perfect day to night dress.”

The seven maids wore a mix of their own choice of nude heels, which worked well with their stunning sequin kimono-style ASOS dresses.

“The chosen bridesmaid dress suited every age and shape and was the perfect amount of ‘sparkly’ for a winter wedding.”

Patrick wore a Ted Baker suit and Paul Smith shoes – his groomsmen sported stylish grey suits from Next.

A huge bonus for Becca and Patrick was having a florist in the family, meaning extra special blooms for their big day. Becca’s mum helped her with planning the various floral designs as they kept the woodland inspiration in mind and added little wintery touches. The results are simply breathtaking.

“Luckily for me, my mum is a trained florist so we had a lot much fun envisioning and creating the arrangements together. I knew I wanted a lot of greenery and foliage along with romantic dusky pinks and wintery berry tones. We decorated the trestle tables and pillars with ivy, eucalyptus and ruscus and the bouquets and arrangements included roses, thistles and dried hydrangeas.”

The gorgeous bride was walked down the aisle by her father to a live piano instrumental of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Young and Beautiful’ from The Great Gatsby.

They chose the reading from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, ‘Love is a Temporary Madness’, read by Becca’s grandad, as after nearly eight years together, Patrick and Becca found the words in this reading very relatable.

Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your root was so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is.

Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being in love, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.

Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two.

The West Mill’s recent makeover from a derelict cotton-spinning mill has retained the incredible industrial architecture of the 1800’s, with its charming exposed brick walls and beams and decayed ceiling. The couple just added lots of foliage, candles, fairy lights and lanterns and their styling of the venue was complete.

The West Mill was the first venue we saw (the weekend after we got engaged) and we knew straight away that it was for us. We have always called it ‘the perfect juxtaposition’. It was industrial but romantic, youthful but historic, big but inviting – it ticked all our boxes!”

“For favours and place cards we created black and white polaroids of our guests. Instead of a displaying a table plan, our master of ceremonies welcomed our guests to the wedding breakfast by announcing ‘Find your face to find your place’.”

“We opted for a naked wedding cake, but with a wintery twist. The Organic Wedding Cake Company did a great job of decorating the cake with holly, fresh spruce, cinnamon and dried fruit.”

To entertain the guests, Becca and Patrick had live music by pianist Steve Levitt, jazz duo Sam and Ella and rockabilly band The Jetsons, with evening music by Bliss Wedding DJ. They also hired a vintage photo booth from Penny Lane Vintage Hire. Their first dance song was ‘Candy’ by Paolo Nutini and Becca explains the heartfelt reason for choosing this beautiful song.

“We both went to the same Paolo Nutini gig at university (before we met) and we always talk about the fact that we must have been so close to each other, not knowing we were going to be each other’s future husband/wife. Crossing paths with your soul mate before meeting is a romantic notion and something we wanted to commemorate on our special day.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“Don’t over think and go with your instinct. I am usually the ultimate ‘faffer’ in life, but I had an epiphany early on in my engagement and realised that in order to make the process more enjoyable, I needed to make clear-cut decisions. With nine months to plan, there was no room for regret.

I also wish I hadn’t been so nervous in the morning so I could have really enjoyed getting ready with my bridesmaids! The rest of the day was perfect though. It sounds cliché but we truly enjoyed every single moment.”

  1. Fab photos Ed and I am very much liking this new venue. A clever mix of old, industrial and neat. It looks a great space to make your own. I love the winter twist with the naked cake, find your face and the bridesmaid’s sparkly gowns. Becca and her mum did a great job with all the flowers and foliage too. What a beautiful winter wedding! Congratulations you two xx

  2. An absolutely stunning winter wedding in every way. Love the bridesmaids dresses which compliment the bride’s beautiful gown. Xx
