Proposal Stories: Rose and Josh

Good morning everyone! THE SUNSHINE IS BACK! Hoorah! Looking forward to seeing plenty of images of it on Instagram today. I’m delighted to be bringing you another one of our proposal stories this morning. I have know Josh for most of my life – we were friends throughout school. After school ended, Josh went to America for a year and it wasn’t until he came home that we started to date. When we get married, we will have been together as a couple for over 8 years.

How He Asked…

Josh proposed on 31st January 2015, our 6th year anniversary. I was at university at the time, right in the middle of exams and essays, as well as planning an overseas exchange programme to Australia that was to happen 4 weeks later. Therefore whenever Josh suggested taking me away or planning anything for our anniversary I would always decline – little did I know what he had planned. I eventually agreed to go to one of our favourite places, Dunkeld. It’s where we had our first night away together and we both love it there.

The week before the proposal, Josh started acting extremely strange, getting phone calls from supposed PPI companies and coming home late from work with the most unbelievable stories about moving furniture?! Just as well I’m very trusting and was busy with university work to give it too much thought. I was just a little suspicious that he might have gotten me a present for our anniversary, but I had no idea of what he really had planned.

On the day, Josh took me to a place called The Hermatige at Dunkeld, a beautiful Scottish waterfall. At The Hermatige, there’s a small building called Ossian’s Hall that overlooks the waterfall.

When we got there, I realised Josh wasn’t beside me – I turned round to see him on one knee holding out a ring, and not any ring – it had been my mums engagement ring. I of course said yes, I couldn’t believe it!

It then started to snow – it couldn’t of been more magical. It was one of the best experiences of my life. The rest of the day we were in this magical little bubble, we walked around the beautiful country side in the snow staring at my left hand in shock. When we got home there was another surprise – the house was decorated with flowers and rose petals, it was beautiful. Josh had also organised to meet our friends and family that night for cocktails.

It was the most perfect day – I was the happiest I’ve ever been.

The day after he proposed, Josh gifted me with a Pandora charm. It was a little heart box that opened with a ring inside. It was so sweet and thoughtful. Josh isn’t normally a very romantic guy but sure made up for it with this proposal.

I also discovered that the late nights home from work with the dodgy excuses was due to asking my Dad and brother for their permission to marry me.  Although this would seem a very old fashioned tradition, it meant a lot to me that he would do this, specially as he had to do it twice.

The Ring

I’m very lucky in the fact I actually got two engagement rings! Josh proposed with my mum’s engagement ring which had also been my nanny’s engagement ring – therefore it was very special to me.

It’s a gold band with a twist where two identical diamonds sit. Unfortunately a few years ago the band had snapped where the diamonds met. Josh had organised to get it fixed to propose with, that’s what all the suspicious ‘PPI phone calls’ where about!

My mum died a few years ago and I love how she was still able to be part of the engagement and wedding planning by using her ring. Josh proposed with this ring so that I could pick my own, so we took a trip to Birmingham jewellery quarter. We picked a platinum ring that was tapered with diamonds on the band with a round diamond with 4 prongs. It’s the most beautiful thing I own and I still just constantly stare at it.

Wedding Plans

We’ve started planning our wedding and we couldn’t be more excited. We get married in just under 9 months and the time has just been flowing by. Our date is the 6th May 2017 and our venue is a beautiful converted barn called Kinkell Byre in St. Andrews. My fiancé wasn’t sure about it to start with but after taking a trip to see it we both fell in love with it – honestly, I don’t see how anybody couldn’t.

The view from the venue is breathtaking, and the barn is rustic cosy and vintage. I love how you can put your own stamp on it which I intend to do (with help from my very talented bridesmaids). I love flowers so I think that will be our main decoration along with the lights.

Josh decided on the food for the day as he’s a man that loves his food, he’s chosen a hog roast for the main meal which I think is great for our venue. After speaking to our friends and family they seem really excited about it so I think Josh made a good choice.

We have most of the big things booked but still have a lot more to do, but to be honest I’m loving the planning of it all its just so exciting and fun.
