1. Paula, can you share a little about the journey that led you to create your wedding stationery business and your passion for wedding design?

It all started back in 2014 when lots of my friends were getting married and I started designing their wedding invitations and items for their day. After a couple of years, I designed a few collections. I saw a gap in the market for simple and timeless designs that could go with any wedding theme.

I feel passionate about letting the colour and magic of a wedding day sing whilst my stationery acts as simple accents in and around the day – and assists with the smooth running and ultimate enjoyment of the day.

2. What aspect of designing wedding stationery brings you the most joy?

I still get blown away by how personable and appreciative the couples I work with are. I guess one of the benefits of working with a designer instead of using a large company, is they will usually go above and beyond, and I really do.

I want it all to be perfect for them and for them to be proud of the event they have put on.

3. Your commitment to sustainability is really encouraging. Could you share more about your eco-friendly initiatives?

Yes! All of the cards we use are FSC certified. Each of our new collections since 2023 have featured recycled stocks which have beautiful speckled textures. I devour over choosing new card stocks! Our wax seals are made from natural resins or beeswax. Our translucent vellum wraps are made from natural tree fibres (not plastic).

We send out all our parcels with plastic free packaging. Occasionally we use bubble wrap that has already been sent to us by a supplier – we recycle as much as possible within our studio.

‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’

We love this quote from Leonardo Da Vinci because it depicts what Lilac & White is about. We design simple stationery that is there to create subtle accents and guides – in and around your wedding day.

4. From your perspective, what elements make stationery feel truly luxurious?

Definitely the texture and feeling of the card as well as special finishes like metallic ink or white ink. Most importantly, less is more, so having lots of white space around text will create both readability and ooze luxury, “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” as Leonardo Da Vinci says.

5. In today’s digital world, what unique value do you think physical invitations add to the wedding experience?

First of all a physical item instantly emanates a special event and something worth reading about. With so many digital images and references flooding our daily lives for a split moment in time, an invitation received in the post might stay in your guest’s hand for a couple of minutes which is a huge difference.

6. How do you see the role of traditional stationery evolving with future wedding trends, digital invites and the introduction of AI?

Great question, it is a little scary how quickly AI is developing and how clever design software is getting in terms of mimicking. In contrast to this, it’s interesting how there has been a demand for handmade businesses from consumers in the last 10 years such as bread makers, jewellers, candle makers and ceramicists.

It’s like as a race, we have collaboratively sub-consciously wanted more human connection to rebel or resist against the rising of technology. Maybe both will grow simultaneously.

7. Beyond just invitations, how can couples use printed elements to add a personal touch to their special day?

There are so many on-the-day stationery pieces that can add a personal touch. One of my favourite pieces to create are menus.

With the rise of different dietary requirements, a batch of menus purchased with Lilac & White can be split into different menu types such as vegan, gluten free and kids options (this is another example of why working with a designer can be easier than manoeuvring online software yourself).

We will print however many you like of each type. Another item I love creating for couples is little tags for their wedding favours which can be tied to their creations such as slow gin, macarons or pots of jam (I love seeing what the couple come up with).

8. Are your designs inspired by current trends, or do you focus more on timeless elegance and personal creativity?

I loosely tie in with trends. For example there are lots of couples looking for nude coloured card pieces recently (it was blush a few years back). So I have added this as an envelope colour option.

I also create any of my collections (and bespoke pieces) in specific card colours requested by the couple.
