The Bride Wore a 1920’s Inspired Jane Bourvis Bridal Gown for her Wedding on the Family Farm

CBT Therapist Lauren and Family Farm Shop Manager George celebrated their beautiful wedding on 1st July at George’s family farm in Lincolnshire.

The picturesque Redhill Farm, just outside Gainsborough, provided a stunning backdrop for this couple’s special day, captured beautifully by the talened Osman of Wolf & Co Photography. The bride looked radiant in a 1920’s inspired, long-sleeved silk wedding dress by designer Jane Bourvis, complemented by a hand-embroidered cathedral-length veil.

From the start, Lauren and George envisioned a wedding that was personal and meaningful. With no specific theme, they focused on creating a joyful celebration filled with good food, music, and the company of loved ones. The farm, rich with memories and natural beauty, was the perfect setting for their nuptials. Their approach to planning their wedding meant they avoided wedding gimmicks in favour of authenticity – they also accepted the support of on the day co-ordinator Amy of Amaranthyne Weddings, to ensure everything ran smoothly on the day.

The intimate ceremony, held at the charming Hackthorn Church, was followed by a delightful drinks reception where guests enjoyed live music and delicious canapés. The marquee, adorned with greenery and all-white seasonal flowers, from local florist Linda at The Spotted Dog Flower Co, created an elegant atmosphere for the reception. Rosie, a talented local chef, prepared a delectable menu featuring lamb from George’s family farm, highlighting the couple’s commitment to local and meaningful touches.

Over to the lovely bride to share her story. Enjoy!

Venue & Location

We got married on George’s family farm – Redhill Farm just outside of Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. George and I have been together since school and have so many memories on the farm and its also the most stunning place for a wedding.

There was no specific inspiration for our wedding – it was more about having a day that was totally personal to us. We tried not to buy into any of the ‘gimmicky’ wedding stuff, and instead just tried to think of the wedding as a big party to celebrate our wedding with lots of good food, music and people. The farm was the perfect backdrop for the wedding so we tried to make sure everything was in keeping and true to us.

Beautiful farmhouse and private family wedding venue.

Bridal Beauty & Accessories

I got a veil from Jane Bourvis. It was a hand embroidered spotty cathedral length veil with an embroidered trim. It was amazing to see the intricacy of the veil, and as my dress was simple it was a special addition that added to the dress.

My shoes were Russell & Bromley leather mules. My sister in law bought me a personalised Ilio Diptyque perfume for the wedding day. She got the box hand painted at Liberty. It was a very special wedding gift, and a scent that will forever remind me of our wedding day.

My Nana sadly passed away in the months leading to the wedding, and my mum got me a really special wedding gift. She had my nana’s ashes made into a bracelet that I was able to wear on our wedding day. I wore some pearl earrings which my Mum bought for me as a wedding gift – i cant remember where they are from as they were from an independent instagram business.

Side shot of a bride with long earrings, her long blonde hair tided into a low bun with tousles, wearing a 1920's inspired, long sleeved silk wedding dress by Jane Bourvis.

For my makeup I asked a friend to do my makeup. Bridie of Subtil took the job very seriously – we had a day picking out makeup in Leeds together, looking at pinterest boards and having a trial at her home. Bridie in her day job is an Ophthalmologist and also has a business called Subtil doing ‘tweeks’ using cosmetic injections etc. Bridie did the most amazing job for my wedding makeup and I cant thank her enough.

We used the amazing Sami for my wedding hair, and my bridesmaids makeup. I went to school with Sami, and it was so special to have her do all the makeup and hair. She is amazing at what she does, and has the most calming lovely presence on the wedding morning. It was so nice to have a familiar face on the wedding morning too.

We also had another hairdresser join us – a friend of a friend. We used Amy to also help out with hair for all the bridesmaids. She did a fab job.

The Dress

Jane Bourvis

Jane Bourvis was the supplier of my 1920’s inspired ‘scarlet dress’ too. She specialises in vintage style bridal gowns and veils.

The experience of getting a dress from Jane Bourvis was very special – we also dealt with Jane personally and she even did a lot of the last minute adjustments on the dress. She went above and beyond to get it right for me. It felt a very different experience compared to going to bridal boutiques where you are one of many.

The shop is tucked away, and was an Aladin’s cave of lace, silk and vintage veils. Would recommend for anyone wanting something slightly different and one of a kind for their wedding day.

I tried a lot of dresses, and to be honest none felt very ‘me’. I knew I wanted long sleeve, and silk and lots of movement. I also wanted something one of a kind and Jane’s dresses hit the brief. I wanted the dress to be timeless, and very simple. I went for Russel and Bromley leather mule heels which were also very simple, and super comfy.

All the bridesmaid dresses were from ASOS – I wanted green to be in keeping with the farm and found the most gorgeous deep olive colour dresses. The colour suited everyone.

The Ceremony

My Dad walked me down the aisle. We walked down to Igiorni by Einaudi. The song is very special to us as I used to play it on the piano.

We used a local priest called Thomas Sheppard to marry us at Hackthorn Church. The church was local to my parents, and was the most stunning setting for our wedding.

We didn’t write our own vows, but we personalised the service using readings that were special to us.

Our good friend read a spoken word poem that was unbelievable, and my cousin read a short religious reading.

George got my engagement ring from Rachel Boston and designed it with Rachel which was very special. We went back to Rachel for our wedding bands.

Joyous, just married bride and groom walking back down the aisle as newlyweds inside the church. The bride carries a large bouquet of white flowers.

I opted for a grey diamond band, and George got a platinum hammered wedding band. Rachel’s jewelry is amazing, and it felt so special to go back to where George got my engagement ring.

Photography

We were put in touch with Osman from Wolf & Co. Photography and he was exactly what we wanted in a photographer. His relaxed laid back approach to photography suited us perfectly.

He also captured the day using a narrative style which we loved as it just captured the day as it unravelled. Osman made us feel so comfortable on the day. We would recommend Osman every day of the week. We are so pleased to have been passed his details, and we love all the photos.

Our favourite part was probably the drinks reception after the ceremony. It was so amazing to see everyone – Rob was playing amazing music, the canapes, fizz and all our favourite people together.

How They Met

George and I met in school many years ago, and got together when we were 17. We have been fortunate to have the time to do so much together before getting married – both been off to separate universities, traveled and lived in Australia before coming home and settling in Lincoln. We got engaged on Christmas eve in 2021 and had an 18 month engagement.

George’s suit was from Edit Suits – we went to Leeds and George was measured and chose the fabric for his suit. It was also special to get his suit completely personalised, and got the date of our wedding embroidered on the pocket of his suit.

On our wedding day, we left transport till the last minute and didn’t really know how we were going to get from the church to the farm. Thankfully my Uncle knew someone who had a Rolls Royce (as you do?!) who kindly agreed to lend it to us for the day.

My uncle drove us back from the church to the farm, and it was such a special part of the day.

We tried to get the marquee filled with as much greenery as possible. We used my Mum and Dad’s olive trees to frame the top table. Georges sister decorated ladders that were hanging between the poles with green foliage. Linda (the florist) also added silver birch branches to the poles of the marquee.

The Reception

We hired an event planner just for the day called Amy Thorne of Amaranthyne Weddings. She is a local wedding planner, and was absolutely amazing.

We hired her just for the day to oversee the running of the day, as it was important that Georges parents felt like wedding guests, and not hosting as we were very conscious it was their home. We wanted them to completely relax. Amy made the day run so smoothly and was there on hand for any help we needed in the run up. We were so grateful to Amy.

Our marquee was from a local company called Mudford Marquees. We chose the company as George’s parents used this company for their wedding many years ago.

Flatlay photography of a simple wedding table setting with a small piece of slate positioned on the plate to hold the hand-written menu in place. Silver cutlery nearby.

I also used White Company candles that I had been building up since we got engaged to have in the marquee. George bought me a “blanc” white company candle many years ago, and we used this scent in the church and then in the marquee. Was it a bit of a bougie extra but felt special to associate the scent with our wedding day.

I designed all the menus, place cards and any wedding stationery. I used an online programme, and also got George’s sister to paint different bits that I was able to scan on to the design. We decided not to do wedding favours.

We used a florist that we already knew. We are lucky to know so many great suppliers. Linda from The Spotted Dog Flower Co. is a florist that is a stone’s throw from the farm. Linda grows all her own flowers, and we were able to just tell Linda all the seasonal blooms we loved and she was able to grow them.

I wanted the flowers to be in keeping with the farm – the farm is full of hydrangeas and lavender growing in the court yard. We opted for lots of white flowers, with natural green foliage and the odd fleck of purple.

A series of glass vases on a table with a chequered table cloth, holding lots of white flowers including Cosmos and grasses.

We used a local chef and caterer called Rosie Dicker. Rosie was absolutely amazing, and was perfect for what we wanted. We wanted wedding food that wasn’t like a traditional ‘gravy dinner’….!

Rosie has such a passion for food, and could customise the menu to exactly what we wanted. We started with a delicious selection of canapes. For the wedding breakfast we had local sourdough with local butter. For the main course we were able to use the meat from George’s family farm.

George’s family farm specialises in local free range pork, and also produces lamb. We were lucky to be able to use the lamb from the farm as the main dish, served with gorgeous salads and potatoes. The food was served on the table, and someone from each table was a designated meat carver!

It was the perfect way to get people socialising and talking over food. For dessert we served my friend’s cake which Rosie did with whipped cream and berries.. Everyone commented how amazing the food was – and i’m still thinking about how delicious the wedding meal was.

My gorgeous best friend Holly from Holly’s Kitchen Garden made our wedding cake. We were very fortunate to be given this as a wedding gift by Holly. I adore Holly’s cakes and opted for my personal favourite of a classic vanilla sponge with jam and cream.

Holly also made all the cake which was served as dessert at the wedding breakfast. She decorated the cake with flowers from her flower garden. It was sensational.

Evening & Dancing

We used a DJ who I have known for many years called Jack Drake. Jack doesn’t usually do weddings – but were so grateful he agreed to do ours. For entertainment in the day whilst we were having drinks and canapes, we used a local guitarist called Rob Benne. I saw Rob playing on Lincoln high street for many years, playing the most amazing chilled guitar music. I always thought how amazing it would be to have him play at our wedding.

I bit the bullet and approached him and he kindly agreed. Everyone commented on how amazing he was.

Low sunset shot of bride and groom looking into each others eyes lovingly as they hold hands. The bride wears a 1920's inspired wedding dress by Jane Bourvis and a pair of long dangly pearl earrings.

We chose ‘Skin’ by Joy Crookes – we heard her sing this at Glastonbury and it felt perfect for our first dance.

We used a local company who came recommended called My Wedding Hire for all the lights and PA equipment.

Words of Wedded Wisdom

Slow down, and pause to take it all in. Its cliche, and said 1000 times but you blink and the day is done and all you’re left with is the memories and photos. George and I took several moments to just walk away and observe the wedding from afar to really take it all in.

I would also say don’t feel your wedding has to be a copy of those you see on instagram or Pinterest – the best weddings we have been to are when the wedding reflects the couple and not a Pinterest board. Let the wedding be a reflection of your relationship.

We budgeted about 15k but went over. We definitely under estimated the cost of a wedding but we were fortunate to save money by doing so much ourselves.
