A Pretty Pale Blue and Yellow Handmade Summer Wedding

In this afternoon’s wedding feature, we celebrate the photographs from Hospital Theatre Practitioner Emma’s wedding to self-employed landscape gardener Jon.  The couple tied the knot on 1st August this year in Derbyshire, with a ceremony held at All Saints church in Risley, followed by a reception at The Priest House Hotel in Castle Donnington.

This wedding is a sweet and laid back family affair full of pretty pastel shades and the cutest little pooch you ever did see at a wedding – I adore his little neck tie 🙂

“Our wedding had a garden theme which we chose mainly because I Love pretty gardens and natural materials. It was also relevant to the woodland where Jon proposed and to Jon being Landscape Gardener. I chose the colour scheme for my garden theme by looking for inspiration online. I wanted something quite bold that would work well with the wood and hessian etc.”

“We met back in 2006 in an awful night club in our local town!  It was a night club that we had both been going to for years but we had never laid eyes on each other before that day. Jon ended up proposing to me seven years later on my 30th birthday on 31st July 2013.

Back when we first met we used to take our dog Jimmy out to a small woodland area where Jon carved ‘Jon + Emma’ into a tree. On my 30th birthday he took me to the exact spot, without me even having the slightest suspicion and got down on one knee. Our 4 year old daughter Isla was there too which made it even more special.”

“My cousin Helen made my cake. I searched for inspiration online and chose a simple three tier yellow design but then with intricate little daisies all over it to finish. I sent her a picture of what I wanted and she did it to perfection. I brought a tiny hessian bunting ‘Mr & Mrs’ cake topper from Amazon.”

“Our Fabulous and very talented photographer was Natalie of Natalie J Weddings. She was so professional and captured every part of our day. She took into account what we wanted but used her expertise to ensure that the pictures were special. We had some traditional shots but then asked that she do what she does so well and get some more creative/artistic shots.

Natalie also captured our theme so well and showcased all of our efforts to make it look pretty. We are so happy we chose Natalie to photograph our wedding!”

“My dress was from B&S Bridal Oulet in lkeston.  The dress I chose was the second dress that I tried on. I had looked at a lot of magazines etc and thought that the I would most likely prefer a fishtail type design. The first dress I tried was of this design but it didn’t feel special. I then tried a dress which was in the window and even though it was not the correct size ( two sizes too big) I knew it was the one. I loved the shape, the design of the lace, the sweetheart neck and the window in the back of the dress.

I chose not to wear a veil, as I didn’t want to cover the window in the back of the dress.”

“Jon’s Dad has owned a Silver/blue Jaguar for may years which he was happy to allow us to use as our wedding car. I was really happy that we went with this and saved money on an expensive wedding car – this looked just as lovely with our bows on!”

“My Father walked me down the aisle to the sound of  ‘Kissing You’ by Desiree.  We had two readings during our ceremony, one was read by Lynne a close friend of ours and the other by Jon’s Father. They included ‘One Corinthians Chapter 13 , verse 4 – 13’.

Our rings were form Stuart Bullock & Sons – fantastic jewellers who also created my beautiful engagement ring. We didn’t have a large budget for the rings and as I had had a very expensive engagement ring we decided that wouldn’t use a large chunk of our budget on rings. My ring was £450 and Jon’s only £100.”

“Our florist was Simply Flowers in Sandiacre, Nottingham.  I was so happy with the flowers they turned out to be exactly what I had imaged and she had created exactly what I had asked for. As I was going for the garden theme I wanted the flowers to be quite wild looking as though they’d been gathered from a garden with lots of green foliage.

She did this so well by adding lots of different shades and textures and then used my yellow and blue to pull in my colour scheme. She grasped my theme and ideas perfectly.”

“My earrings and necklace were from a local boutique/Tearooms – Cache Pot in Breaston, Derby. My garter with blue ribbon was borrowed from a friend and I also wore my sick nan’s ring as she was too ill to attend the wedding – this was ‘my something old’.”

“The Priest House Hotel did all of the catering for our wedding. We had reception drinks and canapes on arrival. Then instead of having an expensive three course wedding breakfast we opted for a hog roast which was served in the garden. Thank god for the marquee as the heavens opened as this was served.”

“My wedding favours took the whole year prior to the wedding to prepare for,as I had to collect 70 + tiny jam jars!  A good friend’s mother then made blueberry and Cassis jam to fill them. The children got yellow millions in the jars instead of jam. I finished these with yellow gingham lids, lace bows an brown thank you tags.

I designed the invites and Order of services and had these printed at Temple Printing, Nottingham. The invited were wrapped in hessian and finished with a yellow bow. The table/seating plan I made in a wooden crate which I decorated with Ivy and twigs. The place cards were also made my me. I hand wrote each persons name onto wooden seed sticks which I then wrapped in hessian ribbon, finished with a yellow bow and sprig of rosemary.”

“I really wanted the venue to look pretty so went completely over-board with lots of yellow patterned bunting and ivy around the venue and particularly on the beams in the main room. Our table decorations were all different. On the head table I carved J&E and a love heart into a tree trunk and hollowed it out for flowers in the same style and colours as my bouquets.

Other table decorations included a bird cage, wooden lantern, jugs and watering can. Tables were also covered with hessian table runners or table clothes decorated with ‘J&E’.  We also used lace doilies and collected jars and bottles filled with colour themed flowers and foliage.”

“I made handmade ribbon garlands and balloon tassels to tie in with the colour scheme and lots of paper poms. I created a colour schemed sweetie table which was also decorated with hessian, logs and Ivy. Outside I used hay bales for extra seating, hung flower filled jars and birdcages in the trees as well as fairy lights.

We had a guest tree which I made from old tree branches and we handed out brown tags for guests to write their wishes for us on and hang on the tree. We even decorated the church with lots of ivy bunting and flowers.”

“I loved every moment of the day for so many different reasons. The preparation was fun and it was lovely being around my friends and family getting ready and to feel that everyone wanted my day to be great. I loved getting Isla into her dress. The ceremony was beautiful and the reception so enjoyable all being together and surrounded by all those that wanted to celebrate with us.

I don’t think that I would have done anything differently as the whole day went almost exactly as I had imagined it.”

Words of Wedded Wisdom…

“Put your time, efforts and money into those parts that matter the most to you and save time and money on those things that are not so important.

On the day of your wedding decide that you are not going to worry or stress over small details that at this point you most likely can not change.

Take moments together and to yourself to stop and take things in. The day flies by so quickly and by doing this you can remember moments together and certain parts of the day.

Don’t get caught up talking to people too long especially those that you are meeting for the first time and you are just being polite. Its your wedding day and they will understand that you have to get round everyone and have a good time yourself.”

      1. Hi Annabel. I would love to tell you about it! We are having a vintage themed/ country style wedding in a country house in Cheshire and our colour theme is pale blue and lemon which I thought was perfect as apparently the 20th March 2015 (our wedding day) is officially the first day of Spring. I’d love to send you some pics from the day? xx

  1. Does anyone know what the name of tiny blue flowers in the boquet are called? i’d love them for my wedding. Thank you
